S&DR 'Derwent' 0-6-0

Descripción
In 1845, Timothy Hackworth ordered a class of 0-6-0 to his design for the Stockton and Darlington Railway. This engine may look much older than it is, since Hackworth sort of turned his back on the 'Stephenson' line of locomotive development after one of his engines, 'Sans Pareil', was beaten at the Rainhill Trials in 1829 by the Stephenson's 'Rocket'.

Remember, this was a contemporary of the LNWR 'Crewe-type' 2-2-2, Hackworth had a very old fashioned way of doing things. However what this engine lacks in looks and technology, it makes up for in brute force.

Not too far from where I grew-up. I fished on the river Derwent! Lovely model.

Eh, probably not. The engine needed two tenders for the way the boiler was designed by Hackworth. In 'Derwent' and other members of its class, Hackworht used a 'return-flue' boiler, which means that the funnel is at the same end as the firebox. A garratt has two powered units with a boiler suspended between. Here, the boiler is in itself the 'power unit', it just has two tenders.

So the tender in the front held the coal for the firebox and a platform for the bloke with a shovel to stand and fuel the engine.

At the 'back' you have the driver situated where the pistons and valve gear. The cylinders were inclined at an aggressive angle with hopes to increase tractive effort by applying the force down onto the wheels (it worked). The tender behind the driver holds the water for the boiler and the driver himself otherwise he'd fall off.

I'm the kind of player who likes to have more options for vehicles and I commonly use the slow down time mods to increase the playing time per year. As much as I appreciate all the extra vehicles provided by modders, there had been a definite lack of vehicles for the early years of the game. I'm very happy to see the growing collection of pre-1900 vehicles.
Your collection of early British rail gives me the variety that I want so Thank You for all your time & work and particularly for highlighting some of these lesser know locomotives :steamhappy:
