i find a ratio of 2.92 units of steam thrust per unit mass is pretty close

just adjust the floating thrust in units of 0.01 :P
But actually this machine is going up slowly, as Twomp in the mario does.

yeah, but how did you make it float so stably? when i tried to balance it so that it would stay at the same height it always rose or fell by a bit

It depends on StabilizerMod. it's stable with it, and it doesn't work without it.
and there are some small watercannons into the starting blocks.
