Regarding Leather
As far as leather armor goes I would say it has more weight because of the metal added to it. Though you do not need it to craft, by how it looks metal is included thus increasing its weight.
Also when you cut a pelt into strips you are also tanning it to remove what is left of the meat and the fur which lowers the weight. As well is the strips are all the same size you will not be able to use all of the pelt since they are not sqaure shaped.
