Introduction

Tequila is mostly a defensive character due to his neutral attack and the punishing nature of his two passive abilities. Even so, he is quite capable of bringing the pain and can go on the offensive with the right battle cards. His hyper Do Pirates Fly in the Sky? gives an attack of opportunity to your pirate minions against any opponents unfortunate enough to land on the traps it spawns.

Play Tequila if:
  • You want to punish bullies who would mess with you.
  • You want to steal stars without having to do anything.
  • You crave victory by stars through combat.

Pros:
  • Hard to bully due to defenses and passive.
  • Strong counterattacks on defense.
  • Pirate Crew Members hit hard and can steal stars from your opponents.
  • Pirate Crew Members give no stars when defeated.
  • Excellent synergy with healing cards and Big Magnum.

Cons:
  • Can't dodge most attacks.
  • Being low on health reduces the effectiveness of his passive.
  • Almost defenseless at 1 HP.
  • High REC mean you will spend a long time reviving.
  • Pirate Crew Members have very low health, often getting KOed before they can attack.
  • Pirate Crew Members will feed wins to high attack characters.
  • Situational hyper depends on random trap placement and good rolls.

Unit Card

HP: 5 | ATK: 0 | DEF: +1 | EVD: -3 | REC: 6

A Pirate Crew Member appears as an enemy unit. Gain +1 ATK for every HP lost during a battle.

The first thing that stands out is Tequila's horrible EVD. At -3, Tequila is pretty much guaranteed to take damage in every battle he fights in. In addition, his 6 REC is one of the worst in the game. If he is ever KOed, he will be down for a long time. Because of these factors, being at 1 health is worse for Tequila than any other character in the game as you will most likely fail the dodge and blocking won't save you.

On the bright side, Tequila's defense and HP are above average and he has two powerful passive abilities. The first causes Pirate Crew Members to randomly appear in addition to the usual enemies that appear in battles.

HP: 2 | ATK: +1 | DEF: -1 | EVD: -1 | REC: —

Opponent loses Lvl x10 stars if defeated. The player who summoned this unit gain the stars. Does not appear as Encounter to the summoner.

Your opponents may encounter this enemy whenever they land on a battle space. Statwise, it is a Seagull with 1 less health, meaning it is easily one shot by most characters. If it manages to KO a player, it will steal 10x their level in stars and send them directly to you. If given initiative by Flying Pirate, they can do a nasty bit of damage. Pirate Crew Member gives 1 win and 0 stars when it is KOed.

Tequila's second passive gives him an attack boost whenever he takes damage in a battle equal to the damage dealt to him. The boost is lost once the battle finishes. This is triggered from attacks as well as effects like Big Magnum or Ceoreparque's passive. This passive is what makes Tequila a monster on defense, allowing him to punish bullies with a big hit of his own. His low evade can even be used to ensure that he takes a bigger hit to fuel the attack boost.

Hyper Card

Do Pirates Fly In the Sky?
Type: Event
Level Requirement: 3
Cost: 20 stars

Set "Flying Pirate" on 2-3 random panels.

Flying Pirate
Type: Trap
Level Requirement: 3
Cost: 0 stars

Fight a Pirate Crew Member summoned by the player who set this trap. The enemy will attack first. No effect on the player who set this card.

This card is effectively an Invasion that always summons a pirate. Gives Pirate Crew Member a much needed first strike, guaranteeing it will get an attack in. However, it is still susceptible to low rolls and battle cards. Landing on one of your traps will remove it. Your hyper also lays fewer traps than other similar hypers like Star Blasting Fuse and Plushie Master. This hyper can be underwhelming unless you play a few of them but can pay off big time with some luck.

Stages of the Game
Levels 1-2
Tequila is pretty well off early in the game. Most of the battle cards don't become available until level 2 and most of the offensive ones have even higher requirements. This means that most players will be forced to go off of their base stats alone if they want a piece of you, and you will be more than happy to repay them in kind. Although your Pirate Crew Members won't be stealing many stars, the amount they do steal is far greater compared to your opponent's norma requirements. KOing a player that is at level 2 will almost set them back entirely if they are just getting enough stars to norma.

Level 3-5
You now have access to Big Magnum and Do Pirates Fly in the Sky?, giving you your biggest power spike over the course of the game. With Big Magnum, you will easily be able to pick most injured players off with ease. Your Pirate Crew Members will steadily give you more stars as your opponents level up, but your opponents will also have more tools to deal this them. A KO at this stage in the game can be huge for you, but your opponents are better equipped to avoid them now thanks to cards like Dinner, Pudding, and Big Magnum.

The Boss
The bosses hit hard, but you always attack first, meaning that you will miss out on using your passive. Although your +1 DEF will give you a good chance of making it out alive, you risk taking tons of damage if you don't keep some defensive battle cards like Rbits and Quick Restoration handy. Worst of all, your pirate crew will be unable to spawn for as long as the boss is around. You can either play without your pirates for a while, or use your defensive cards to try to take it down sooner. The former will slow down your star collection, but is much safer, while the latter will likely get you KOed.

Deckbuilding Overview
Ranking
I use letter ranks to rate cards. Cards are sorted by type, then alphabetically within each tier. This is by no means an absolute measure of how powerful each card is. Feel free to use any cards you want to fit your strategy, although I advise against bringing F cards. When it comes down to it, play what you think will be the most fun for you.

S: Necessary. Godlike synergy or required for the character to function. (Note: Not every character has one of these.)
A: Powerful. A high priority card that will usually be in your deck.
B: Very Good. Not necessary, but should always be considered.
C: Average. Nice cards to have, but might be outclassed. Also includes situational cards.
D: Poor. Helps your opponents more than it helps you.
F: Awful. You are actively hurting yourself by bringing these cards.

Big Magnum
It doesn't have your picture for nothing! The damage from activating this triggers your passive, giving you a massive +3 attack boost. Play on defense only if you are confident that you will survive.
Invasion
Pirate crew members can spawn from this and it gives them the priority they need to deal some damage. The best part? You don't even have to be the one to play it. Your pirates can spawn off of any Invasion set by any player, provided you weren't the one to land on it. An absolute must for trap-based builds.

Portable Pudding
Tequila is at his most vulnerable at 1 HP. Even characters like Aru or Natsumi would be foolish not to attack you. Make them the fool by playing this card to gain your health back and deliver a powerful counterattack.
Quick Restoration
Super useful for healing damage from battles. Play this at high health to take dangerous amounts of damage with impunity, triggering your passive while keeping your health high. Keep in mind that its usefulness decreases as your health falls and it doesn't actually make you any tankier for that battle.
Extend
This card nullifies one of your biggest weaknesses, allowing you to come back from a KO the next turn rather than being stuck waiting to revive.
Mimic
Transforms any hyper cards in your hand into the hyper of one of your opponents. Since most people won't use this to copy your Do Pirates Fly in the Sky?, Tequila can run it safely to exchange his hyper for something less situational like Extraordinary Specs or Hyper Mode.
Path Blockers
Force opponents to land on your hyper traps! Heck, they might even do it for you and save you some stars!
Pudding
Healing is especially important for Tequila. This card not only heals you fully, but does it for free. The only downside is that you can't use it until level 4.
Metallic Monocoque
This card is really handy for preventing opponents from dealing damage to you outside of combat where your counter passive doesn't trigger.

Serious Battle
This card is your best chance at dodging a lethal attack. While it still comes down to you having to win a die roll, it at least puts you on more even footing than your natural -3 EVD does.
Dash!
Good for repositioning, chasing enemies, or escaping yourself when your health gets too low.
Nice Present
Fine booty.
Passionate Research
If you are planning to play your hyper as much as possible, this card is invaluable to you. Otherwise you can pass this one up for something else.
President's Privilege
Makes it a little easier to play some of your more expensive cards more often like Big Magnum and your hyper.
Saki's Cookie
Since Tequila tends to take at least some damage in combat, healing is extremely important so that you don't lose your stars and end up marooned for a long time. Every little bit helps, and Saki's Cookie is the only one you can play for the first few normas for free.
Dinner
Another good healing option that heals you no matter who plays it.
Poppo the Snatcher
Makes it harder to defend, but this also entices people into eating your revenge passive. Al so good if an opponent finds it, as it makes them more susceptible to your Pirate Crew Members.
Assault
Lets you fight your opponents if they land on it. It works even better if they set it and you land on it as you can get the attack boost from your passive.
Go Away
Deny normas for a little while by placing this on a home base. Only a minor annoyance if you land on it yourself.
Poppoformation
This is very bad to have inflicted upon you, but grate for weakening opponents. They will likely try to cleanse the effect on an encounter panel. If your Pirate Crew Member shows up, you have a much higher chanse of KOing them and stealing their stars.

Final Battle
You will keep your attack boost from your passive between rounds and it continues to stack up as you take damage. Expensive, but you are heavily favored as long as your health is reasonably high.
I'm on Fire
Helps with securing KOs on NPCs and low players. Missing the KO will cause you to take more damage than normal due to the DEF debuff, so make sure you can finish the job.
Rbits
Keeps you safe in the face of bosses and juiced up bullies while still allowing you to counterattack.
Reverse Attribute Field
This turns your -3 EVD into a whopping +3 while also debilitating any offense characters that would try to attack you. It does reduce your DEF to -1, so watch out for big hits.
Shield Counter
Expensive, but the only surefire way to stop a bully from KOing you at low health.
Tactical Retreat
This card is better for fleeing from fights where the opponent has used a boost or event card to amp up their damage, not to escape when your health is low. They can always just attack you next turn.
Ambush
Good for cleaning up players who didn't pay attention to your passive.
Backdoor Trade
Pirate Crew Members have a habit of suddenly throwing stars at you. This card can get you normas while you are far away from home.
Nice Jingle
Helps you get stars faster. Best used after you hit level 3 so you can get maximum value out of it.
Princess's Privilege
Toss away your hand for a new one. Great if you are looking for big magnum, healing, or hyper cards.
Treasure Thief
Despite being a pirate, this card is only decent on Tequila due to his passive discouraging players from attacking you.
Gift Exchange
Giving away your hyper is annoying, but not nearly as detrimental as it can be for some other characters like Poppo or Suguri.
Here and There
Escape when your health gets low or yank an opponent away from an objective.
Holy Night
Gives everyone slightly more stars over time. Helps you and any other star collectors.
Little War
Similar to Final Battle, but can be triggered by Play of the Gods and lasts a few turns.
Mix Phenomenon
Make the boss disappear for a few turns, making the board safer and giving your pirates a chance to spawn.
Out of Ammo
You want to play battle cards, so use this to prevent opponents from playing cards to attack you or to prevent them from trapping your base.
Party Time
This is better on characters that want to attack other players, but if someone else plays this, it can give you an opportunity to clean up the resulting chaos.
Super All-Out Mode
Gives everyone an attack boost and incentivizes your opponents to try and attack you. Be careful with this one.
We Are Waruda
Good for repositioning your pirates when the RNG placement isn't great. Also gets traps off of your home base.
C Rank Cards (Part 2)
Lost Child
Makes you move backwards. Might get you home faster, but mostly makes it so opponents can't follow you.
Lucky Charm
Tequila is hard for most characters to attack due to his counterattack mechanic. However, this gift card will put opponents in a catch 22. They can either attack you and risk the counter attack or leave you alone while the stars come rolling in. Toss this if you're low on HP, otherwise you won't be able to use cards to defend yourself.
Price of Power
On the one hand, it makes cards more expensive when most of them can be played by level 3. Of the other hand, nobody expects the level 2 Big Magnum.
Windy Enchantment
Increases your movement a tiny bit. Not great, but it does help.
Bad Pudding
Only take if you like messing with people's cards. Maybe a trap build would want this.
Brutal Prank
Discarding your hyper isn't the end of the world for Tequila, so this can be used to help shut down characters who depend on theirs. The heal can be nice sometimes.
Dangerous Pudding
A mild annoyance at worst for anyone who lands on it. If you plan on bringing a lot of traps, this one should be considered. Otherwise, it doesn't help you a whole lot.
Encore
You can use it to give pirates two chances to spawn on encounter panels. Not the most efficient use of a card slot though.
Flamethrower
Like Bad Pudding, but more annoying. KOing yourself on this is really bad, but shouldn't happen often if you are drawing cards.
Heat 300%
Makes your opponents easy pickings for your Pirate Crew Members, but also reduces your DEF to -1 if you land on it. Play at your own risk.
Piggy Bank
Bury some treasure and come back for it later. Keep in mind that other people can land on it and placing it on your home base makes it obvious what it is.
Present Thief
You have better options for traps. Place on your base to steal cards from people who think that it's Piggy Bank.
Sealed Memories
Gives you some information about the victim's hand, which is nice, but this card is better on characters who have a way to reliably fight people after they trigger it.
Sky Restaurant 'Pures'
Destroy a star collector's hopes and dreams. This can really suck if you land on it, but your pirates can help you get it back.
Tragedy in the Dead of Night
Another good trap to set on your base as you can't steal cards from yourself and you might steal the trap an opponent was intending to set there.

D Rank Cards
Accel Hyper
Lets you deal a ton of damage, but also lets your opponents do the same to you. Running this card can be quite risky due to your 6 REC.
Dark Side of Businesses
Lets your opponents get around your passive and your defense to get at your stars.
Desperate Modification
Too risky for anything other than a last resort. But hey, it gives you a 50% chance to dodge 2s and 1s!
Extension
For players that like to gamble. I don't trust this card, but Tequila can benefit from most battle cards that aren't Rainbow-Colored Circle.
Shield
Lets you survive just about anything, but only when defending. Bosses will still be a problem and this card also prevents you from counterattacking.
Completion Award
Great for trap decks when paired with your hyper, but otherwise pretty meh.
Flip Out
Not terribly useful. It really only makes a bad situation slightly less bad.
Gentleman's Battle
Since you attack first, you won't trigger your passive. This will make it difficult to get KOs with this because of your 0 ATK.
Lonely Chariot
Tequila's HP is important to him. Playing this will resign you to an untimely demise and your 6 REC will keep you there for a while.
Sweet Destroyer
This card isn't good unless your name is Yuki (Dangerous).
Scary Solicitation
This isn't a very good method of removing stars from your opponents due to players liking to hold on to cards and the 30 star cost.
Scrambled Eve
I'm not a fan of this card in general but it does affect Tequila less than some other characters who like to hang on to their hyper or supportive cards.
D Rank Cards (Part 2)
Bloodlust
The health drain hurts, but damn does it make your counterattacks spicy!
Unlucky Charm
Only gift hoarders and Starbo want this.
Exchange
This card is for comebacks only and can screw you if you are doing well.
For the Future of the Toy Store
Tequila's pretty good at collecting stars, so this card will usually be unplayable for most of the game.
I Wanna See You
While this isn't as dangerous for Tequila as it is for other characters, it still doesn't help him much.
Mimyuu's Hammer
Deals damage to you outside of combat.
Piyopiyo Procession
You attack first, so it will be hard to take down the NPCs before they get to hit you. You risk taking a lot of damage from this if you don't OHKO them.
Wanted
Pirate KOs won't get you wins. Since most of your offensive power comes from playing defensibly, an opponent affected by this will try to stay away from you.

Rainbow-Colored Circle
Boosts your god awful EDV to just regular awful at the expense of your defense. Other characters will make much better use of this card, so you shouldn't bring it in the first place.
Sink of Swim
This can and will be used to run you if an opponent finds you at 1 HP.
Long-Distance Shot
Lets opponents damage you outside of battle, circumventing your passive and making it harder for you to survive.
Stiff Crystal
Deletes your Flying Pirate traps before they get the chance to be useful. Never bring this if you plan on using your hyper a lot.
Accelerating Sky
Makes you straight up weaker for 30 stars, but at least it makes it harder for players to block your Pirate Crew Members (unless they roll poorly).
Cloud of Seagulls
Everything wrong with Long-Distance Shot, but with more damage and the risk of shooting yourself in the foot with it.
Forced Revival
Turns your unfortunate demise into two unfortunate demises, as being revived with 1 HP leaves you no way to defend yourself.
Indiscriminate Fire Support
Continuous out of combat damage until you get KOed? Ew!
Oh My Friend
Summons the boss, preventing your Pirate Crew Members from being able to spawn and putting you at risk of taking a lot of damage until it is dealt with.
Play of the Gods
They took our Pirates!
Sealed Guardian
Being at 1 health almost guarantees that you will be KOed by an attack. Don't play this even if someone else brings it.
Serene Hush
This doesn't help you much and cancels your your Flying Pirate traps for a turn.
Star-Blasting Light
Wipes out all of your Flying Pirate traps and damages you for each one, potentially KOing you. Bring We Are Waruda if you are scared of traps, not this.
Unpaid Work
Prevents your pirates from doing their jobs this turn.

Krilla can usually get more traps down and spends less stars doing it, but Flying Pirate and Invasion are capable of doing a lot of work if you can get KOs with them.

Who to Watch Out For
Bullies and Offensive Characters

Anyone with an ATK bonus will have an easy time fighting your Pirate Crew Members. Characters with +2 ATK or higher will easily be able to farm them for win normas. On the bright side, you are well equipped to deal this these characters if they ever come for you.

Marc

Marc can damage you outside of combat with her hyper 16x Big Rocket. She can easily KO you with it later in the game, forcing you to take a vacation for a few turns due to your high REC. She is also great in combat on both offense and defense, making it difficult for your Pirate Crew Members to deal damage to her if they even survive. Try to keep yourself healed and hope your pirates have more success with the other players.

Fernet

Fernet has little reason to attack you, meaning you will have to attack her and miss out on your passive damage bonus. Even with Big Magnum, it can be very difficult to KO her. Your Pirate Crew Members will have trouble dealing damage to her as well. Her hyper Air Strike can damage you outside of combat, potentially KOing you.

Iru

Look! Another damage hyper! Extended Photon Rifle deals damage randomly, so although she can't control it, it can hurt you and even KO you if she playes it at the right time or you get unlucky. On the bright side, her passive guarantees that you will get to attack her with a +1 attack boost as long as it doesn't KO you. Although you aren't as bothered by being picked off as some other characters due to your low EVD getting you KOed anyways, it will make it tough to survive if you are at 2 heath and don't KO her.

Kai

Kai's hyper Protagonist's Privilege prevents you from counterattacking when he initiates combat on you. Not only does this make your ATK boost useless, it softens you up making it more dangerous for you in the long run. It even works on your Pirate Crew Members, but not the ones summoned by Flying Pirate as they have priority.

Sherry

Sherry's passive makes it so she will always attack second. This means that she will always trigger your passive attack boost after you attack. Her combat stats are high as well, so be wary of fighting her without Big Magnum. On the bright side, your Pirate Crew Members will always get first whack at her. Her hyper Whimsical Windmill can be used to pick you off when your health gets low if she is willing to fight all of the other players to do it.

Star Breaker

Her high attack makes KOing your Pirate Crew Members a breeze, practically giving her normas for free. Her hyper Star Blasting Fuse will drop you down to 1 HP if you land on one of the Invisible Bombs, making you helpless on defense. She will eat your crew for breakfast and you for desert.

Suguri (46 Billion Years)

Suguri (46BY) has tons of tools to bypass Tequila's damage boosting passive. Her passive allows her to double the damage of her boost and event cards, allowing her to damage Tequila when he cannot receive his revenge boost. Observer of Eternity will make sure she is never out of ways to harm you, even giving her some hyper cards like x16 Big Rocket. The sheer quantity of these cards at her disposal means you will never be safe near her. Even a measly Long-Distance Shot can put you from a respectable 3 HP to a next-to-dead 1 HP. Stay as far away from her as you can and hope that your pirate crew members can cut her down to size.

Tequila

In mirror matches, his Pirate Crew Members will show up in addition to yours, stealing opportunities for you to earn some stars. He will benefit greatly from the cards you bring as you will his. Generally, the battles between you two will come out in favor of the defender unless Big Magnum is involved, so don't fight unless their health is low or you have Big Magnum.

Co-op

Tequila is a powerful ally in co-op, doing well in any role except attacker while still providing damage for his team. It should be noted that neither the bosses nor their minions can trigger encounter panels, so your pirate crew members will never spawn. But fear not, for Do Pirates Fly In The Sky? has been changed in this mode! It now causes two pirate crew members to fight a random enemy with priority. They are still capable of dealing high amounts of damage and put Tequila at zero risk. This hyper makes him invaluable against M10 Robot, as it can be used as two hits against its shield or a massive attack once the shield goes down. It is less useful against bosses that have minions like the Summer Beast, due to the attack going towards a random an potentially unnecessary unit.

Attacker
While Tequila enjoys the ATK boost this role gives, the priority it grants in battles directly counters his passive. In addition, the recovery debuff pushes Tequila's REC all the way up to a 7. This role may be viable if the player is a low level, but quickly becomes his worst role as it levels up.
Defender
The defense buff granted by the defender role makes Tequila incredibly tanky. This role ends up playing more like avenger than a traditional defender, as Tequila usually can't spare his health for shields if he wants to take advantage of his passive. Good for games where survival is a priority.
Support
The EVD buff is more or less wasted on Tequila, but being able to revive his allies in the thick of battle while still dealing damage makes the role much more useful.
Avenger
Although Tequila's passive does not stack with the avenger's passive damage buff, he can still benefit greatly from the avenger role's other abilities. Beyond is still very strong on him and the REC buff is well appreciated.
Dealer
There isn't much point in giving away Do Pirates Fly in the Sky?, but being able to draw it more often while also sending cards to your allies makes this a great role for Tequila. It even grants him an additional point of HP, which lets him make use of his passive more often.

Conclusion

Invasion can spawn pirates, and regardless of whom places it
