Introduction
We proudly present the new #beginners-guide First edited 23/10/18

So you've just bought Rust. Now I hope you are ready for:
  • Hardship
  • Lots of learning
  • PVP Action
  • Mad loot
  • Raids
  • Staying up all night to do those raids
  • Being Roofcamped
  • Being Doorcamped
  • Being Zerged
  • Meeting new friends (& enemies)
  • And most importantly, one of the best gaming experiences you will ever have
As of when I wrote this I have 3000 hours in game so it is definitely an enjoyable game and one I recommend you atleast try out

Settings
When you launch Rust you will be greeted with how you would like to open the game:
  • What resolution
  • What monitor
  • And what graphics setting

The most important of these 3 options is the graphics setting you choose to run the game at.

They are as shown:

Potato is suitable for lower tier PC's and Fantastic is suitable for high tier PC's

If your PC exceeds the recommended requirements to run the game then you should be ok running Good --> Fantastic

If your PC only just meets the recommended requirements to run the game or is less then you should first try running the game in Potato --> Simple

Here are the system requirements that Steam has set for Rust

Play around with these different settings to see what suits your PC the best

"How do I see what FPS my game is running at?"

By pressing f1 you are able to access the console. Here you can assign keybinds and run commands to see your FPS and how well you performed in a fight. The console is also very useful for admins.Later on in the guide there will be a more in depth look at the f1 console

By typing perf 6 into console you are able to see your current FPS and Ping aswell as some other nerdy stats in the bottom left of your screen whilst you play

It will look something similar to this :

Having above 60FPS whilst in game is good performance

Censorship
If you would like to shield your precious eyes from profanity and nudity you can enable certain settings in the options tab. You can censor a naked player's nudity and hide signs that are player made and could display questionable artwork

Recommendations
Personally I would recommend turning off max shadow lights as it can cause realistic shadows by light emitted from campfires to make it harder to see whilst in your base. Turning it off gives you much greater visibility at night time in your base when you have a light on. Try turning this setting on and off next time you are near a campfire.

Other Settings
The majority of the other settings are changeable based on your preferences and ability to run the game so have a play around with them and see what you like (some settings are more performance impacting than others, this is displayed when hovering over a setting)
Choosing your server
There are many different servers to choose from on Rust and depending on the one you choose it will affect your gameplay

By clicking on the Rust logo at the top selection bar you are put into the server selection menu

Welcome to the Server menu

Official Servers are mainly ran by Facepunch themselves and therefore tend to be more popular and have alot of players playing at one time. However, it also makes them more susceptible to having cheaters and alot of fighting

Community Servers are hosted by players who have paid to have a server and tend to be friendlier and have more active admins. This is where I recommend you start to learn the game

Modded Servers are also player hosted but have extra things added to them to change up the game. For instance, they may have 2X gather rate or more (You get twice the amount of resource when collecting materials) This can be good if you do not play often. However, it is not playing the game in it's true form and can sometimes be too easy and consequently less fun

If this is your first time playing Rust you will find it much easier to start on a community server with little to no people on

Waking up on the beach
When you load into your chosen server you will spawn on a beach with nothing but two items, your Rock and your Torch.
Your Rock is your best friend when you first spawn, it will allow you to gather resources and bash heads in.

The map is arranged in coordinate like grids to make it easier to find your friends and is accessed by pressing G (by default).
By holding and dragging the Right Mouse Button you can move around on the map.
By Holding Right Mouse Button and Scrolling you can zoom in and out

Defending yourself
If the first thing on your To-do-list is to get something to defend yourself then you are going to want to craft the first basic weapon above the rock - a wooden spear. You will need 300 Wood.

The crafting menu is accessed by pressing Q (by default)

The quick crafting menu is found on the right side of your inventory that is accessed by pressing Tab (by default)

To get your first Wooden Spear you will need to locate a tree and bash it with your Rock to get wood

After your first hit of the tree a small red X will appear on it. If you hit this X and the others that will appear, the tree will be harvested faster.

Once you are finished harvesting the tree it will fall over with a great noise - this is when you will gain the most resource

Nodes
Nodes that you can either harvest Stone, Metal or Sulphur from depending on their type also have a similar Mini-Game feature

By hitting the spark (Only visible in the daytime or at night when using a miners hat) the node will break quicker. On the final hit you will get a bonus of more of the resource but this is only available when using stone tools or above

Here are the three node types side by side. Nodes are typically found alongside hillsides, in rocky areas and near cliffs

The white node is a stone node, when harvested with metal tools it provides 1000 stone.

The yellow node is a sulphur node (This is used to make gunpowder and explosives), when harvested with a metal tool it provides 300 sulphur.

The brown / reddy node is a metal node, when harvested with a metal tool it provides 600 metal ore and 2 high quality metal ore.

Sulphur, Metal Ore and High quality metal ore need to be smelted to be used in crafting. This can be done by a small or large furnace when Wood is added. After wood burns it becomes charcoal - this is used alongside cooked sulphur to create gunpowder

Your new spear
Once you begin crafting your first spear it will take 30 seconds to appear in your inventory

By holding Right Click you are able to prepare your spear to throw. Press Left click now to throw your spear - this can be done with all melee weapons

With good aim you should be able to hit your target, Aiming for the head will always do more damage

So you've got a spear for foes that are up close, but what if they are out of an arms reach? You are going to want to craft a bow - 200 Wood and 50 cloth

To do this you will need to find Cloth - a very important crafting item. Cloth can be gained in various ways, Hemp bushes, Harvesting cacti (Its spikey!), harvesting animals and by Recycling

Hemp bushes typically grow in grass lands and forests, when harvested by pressing E (by default) they will provide 10 cloth and 1 hemp seed

Hemp seeds can be planted and over time will grow into a large harvestable hemp bush. I would strongly recommend keeping seeds for as long as possible unless you come across a much rarer item you'd rather have. If you are patient your seeds will provide a bountiful harvest.

Once you craft your first bow it will come with no arrows. You will also have to craft these with 10 stone and 25 wood per 2
Keep an eye on how many arrows you have so you don't run out during a fight!

Once again by holding right click you can pull your bow back ready to fire. Once you are ready to shoot press left click

Arrows and nails can be retrieved after shot. Sometimes however, they will break and wont be retrievable

By about now you will be bored of smacking things with your rock - It's time for some Stone Tools!

These can be made using 200 wood and 100 stones each
Getting Your First Base down
Once you are happy with the resource you have collected it is time to get a base down

This looks like a nice spot !

When building your base you want to keep in mind whats around you. You want to know where the nearest source of trees is, nodes, your closest monument / rad town and where your neighbours live

These are the 3 most important items when it comes to building your base:
  1. The building plan -allows you to place walls, foundations etc using wood
  2. The hammer -allows you to upgrade, demolish (not after 15 minutes of placement) and rotate building blocks
  3. The tool cupboard -stops your base from decaying (breaking over time) and stops other players building in your area; you want to keep this safe!!

First of all take out your building plan, hold right click and select foundation

Start small! In this example I am making a 2x2 footprint

Select and place:
  • Walls
  • Ceilings (floors)
  • Doorway

Before you upgrade make sure all the walls of your base are the correct way round.
There is a soft side and a hard side

This is the soft side, keep this side facing the INSIDE of your base

This is the hard side, keep this facing the OUTSIDE of your base.

If the softside faces outwards then your base can easily be breached by using nothing but melee weapons.

Now take your Hammer and upgrade everything by holding right click and selecting a material.
In this example I will be upgrading my base to stone - you will want the entire of your base stone by the time you log off or you can easily be flame raided by other players

Your base will now look something similar to this

Make sure you upgrade everything!

Place a wooden door (or sheetmetal if you can afford it!) in your doorway and lock it with a lock
You can either lock it using a key lock or a code lock. Key locks are best for solo players as they are cheap and only 1 person can access the door without a key. The owner of the key lock will always be able to open the door

Codelocks are essential for groups as they will all be able to access the door, this lock however is more expensive at 100 cooked metal frags per

Once your base is secured place your Tool cupboard in the corner (commonly abbreviated to TC by players) and authorise. Now you are the only player that can build in your area unless another player authorises to your TC.
You will now see that when you are in your TC privilege (that is emitted by your bases foundations) that it will display "Building Privilege" in the bottom right of your screen

You will also see that you are told your base is decaying. You will need to place the resource of your base inside the TC to stop is decaying. (You can also place any resource in your TC just for storage as shown) You are now told how long your base has before it starts to decay in the bottom right (displayed as "Upkeep time")

Currently you only have 1 door, you should build an airlock. Use a triangle foundation and a doorway to create this

Now (if you place both doors the right way) if you open both doors no one can get in but there is a small gap for you to shoot through. This is handy when someone is camping your door

How do I get metal doors?
Firstly to replace or remove a door you need to hold e on the lock to unlock and then remove it. Open the door, hold e again and take off your door

To get metal doors and codelocks (codelocks are only needed if you are playing in a group) you will need metal fragments. These can be obtained by either recycling (recyclers are found in monuments / rad towns) metal components (found in barrels and boxes alongside roads and in monuments) or by smelting metal ore in a furnace

Furnaces require lowgrade, this is also a very important crafting item. This can be obtained by: killing an animal and crafting lowgrade using animal fat and cloth, smashing red oil barrels alongside roads and in monuments, smelting crude oil in an oil refinery or by looting cave boxes that have lowgrade in them with miners hats.

Once you have a furnace place metal ore in 3 slots and wood in another - leave space for the metal fragments and charcoal

This is the most efficient way to arrange metal ore in your furnace. The amount of ore is the exact amount for what the 1000 wood is able to smelt

Getting New Gear
By now you have a base up and some basic materials, but you ask "How do I upgrade from my bow?"

To craft better items you need to first find it in a crate alongside a road or monument and then research it using a research bench and scrap (found in crates and barrels). To craft it you will need the right amount of materials and the corresponding workbench for the item

Once you learn the items blueprint you will then be able to craft it at the corresponding workbench. In the example above it is shown that the Semi-automatic-pistol (commonly abbreviated to SAP or p2) requires a level 2 workbench to craft it
As of the introduction of the blueprint + component system there are now 3 tiers of workbench in the game. Level 1, level 2 and level 3. To craft the level 2 workbench you will need to use the level 1, and to craft the level 3 you will need to use the level 2(edited)

Here is an image of all 3 workbenches side by side.

To craft at a research bench you simply need to be standing near it - it will display in the bottom right of your screen when you are in workbench range. When crafting a lower tier item compared to the level of workbench you have the item will be crafted quicker - For example, crafting arrows at a level 3 workbench is faster than doing it without a workbench

The level 1 workbench is very easy to break and only takes a few tools. This means you can save space and easily replace it with a level 2 in the exact same spot.
The same cannot be said however about the level 2 and level 3, to break these you are best of breaking the foundation under it

Some items you do not need to find and research as they are default blueprints, these include the crossbow and nailgun. These weapons are deadly at early game and will help you when scavenging for gear when used correctly. They do however require the level 1 workbench to craft them

Different loot crates found in the game
  • The Barrel
Arguably not a crate but your main source of crafting components

The barrel includes various components that are used in crafting and drop 2 scrap per. The red barrel however is an oil barrel and will drop lowgrade and crude oil (which can be refined in an oil refinery to get lowgrade with 1 crude oil being refined into 3 lowgrade)
These are found in 'junkpiles' alongside roads and scattered around and in monuments
  • The boonie box
This isnt it's actual name but it is what I have nicknamed it as you are more than likely to find a boonie hat or other roleplay item

These small crates are found at the mining outpost, abandoned supermarket and gas station and once looting will break and make alot of noise. They include small amounts of scrap and often a deployable item such as a rug and a small piece of clothing such as a boonie hat
  • Food crate
These boxes are found scattered all over the map: around caves, alongside the roads, in monuments and found in abundance in the abandoned supermarket and gas station

They include either food, water or radiation pills
  • Brown crate
These crates are found alongside roads and in monuments

These crates offer 5 scrap per and crafting components. If you are lucky this crate will provide you with a low tier weapon such as a revolver or other deployable item such as window bars. These crates also have the chance to hold an explosive such as bean can or satchel, these are very handy when it comes to raiding your neighbours base so you probably should loot every single one of these you come across.
Another variation of this crate will spawn in and around caves with the exact same model. This variation however will drop tools or a light for you to explore the cave with
  • Medical crate / food crate
This crate looks vey similar to the brown crate but has either a Medical Cross or Tupperware on the side to indicate that it is different

The medical crate will provide either a bandage, medical syringe or a large medical kit
The food box will offer water, pumpkins, berries and other food items. This crate is similar to the food crate but has better items
Both these crates are found dotted around some monuments
  • Red box
This box is found alongside roads and offers 5 scrap along with a tool, ammo or piece of clothing

  • Military Crate
This crate is much rarer than all others mentioned so far and is found in monuments

This crate typically offers much better loot compared to the common brown crate. There is a chance that you will find a good tier 2 weapon or deployable in this crate such as a Semi Pistol or Large furnace. In this crate you will always find scrap and a component
  • Elite Crate
This crate is the rarest in the game and is only found at the top of launch site and inside military tunnels where it is guarded by scientist NPC's
Monument Puzzles
Alot of loot on Rust island is locked behind puzzles found in monuments. These puzzles consist of flicking switches, placing in fuses and using keycards to access doors. Here is a video on how to perform each puzzle at each monument in the game
Please note that the durability of keycards was halved in a recent update

Scientists
On your looting travels you will most likely come across one of these men in blue

These are called scientists. Scientists alongside roads are passive unless you get too close or attack them. Killing a scientist is not too hard as long as you are able to hit some headshots and dodge bullets. Scientists will drop: scrap, green keycards and medical syringes along with other items.

Not all scientists are passive. Scientists found in Military Tunnels will shoot on sight and throw grenades. They will also drop much better loot, your typical road scientist loot and other items such as guns and ammo

The recycler
Now that you have new items you want to research and craft you may find yourself at a deficit of scrap. On this occasion a recycler is your best friend! These are found in most monuments

The Recycler will grind down metallic components in return for scrap, metal fragments and high quality metal. Cloth based components such as rope, tarp and sewing kits will return for cloth - This is a very good source of cloth if you have chosen to live in the desert where no hemp bushes naturally grow!

Recycling is the best way to get scrap!
Here are some scrap values for recycling components - tech trash comes from recycling CCTV cameras and laptops, it is also looted from military crates
http://rust.wikia.com/wiki/Scrap
Where is a good place to set up my base?
Firstly you need to understand that the map is made up of 3 tiers, these 3 tiers contain different levels of loot and consequently different monuments. Whilst being split into tiers the map is also made of 3 different biomes that each have advantages and disadvantages to when living in them.

The Tiers of the Map:

Tier 0 is the part of the map in which players who have just spawned/respawned will be placed most commonly on the beaches of the area as well as the Tier 0 monuments, which include: Gas station, Abadoned Supermarket, Mining outpost, small harbour, satellite dish and lighthouse. These give basic loot crates (Brown crates, Food crates, the boonie box) and if you are lucky, you might find a military crate.

Tier 1 contains monuments such as train yard, water treatment plant, junkyard, sewer branch and the dome. These generally contain medium tier loot including a higher chance of military crates and overall more boxes for you to loot. Most of them also have puzzle rooms, which require you to do the monument puzzles that were addressed earlier in this guide.

The tier 2 part of the map contains the monuments Military tunnels and Launch site which are the only monuments which possess Elite crates and use red cards in their puzzles. Power plant is also a tier 2 but does not give Elite Crates. Elite crates give the top tier loot for you to use in game including rockets, armoured door and much more.

Safezones

In addition, in tier 1 areas of the map there are two monuments which are safe zone monuments called bandit camp and outpost. These are monuments in which players can interact without the threat of others wielding weapons as players are not allowed weapons out for more than 5 seconds in these ‘safe zones’ or else the bandits/scientists will see you as a threat and proceed to kill them. Also, any players which have been in combat recently are still considered a threat until a period of time has passed to prevent players abusing safe zones to escape fights which they initiated/took part in. However, while they are ‘safe zone’ monuments with the 5 seconds players are allowed to wield a weapon in players may attempt to kill you, to counteract this Facepunch has made it so that as long as you are inside the designated ‘safe zone’ shown in the bottom right of your screen players can’t loot other players bodies. Inside the bandit camp however players can loot you if you are not in the gambling room but if players attack you the guards will still respond.

Both variations of safezone also house many shops that you can purchase a number of items from. The outpost mainly offers resource deals, deployables and clothing whilst the bandit camp mainly offers advanced weapons and grenades - These are the main items for sale however there are others too. Nearly all purchases from these shops cost scrap

The Biomes

The first biome is the temperate grassland plains or the green land. This place normally has a lot of everything including naturally occurring hemp and has a temperature In which you won’t take damage in at all times of the day. On a lot of maps the green land is the tier 0 area and a small patch occurs in the far corner of the tier 2 area. No real downsides to it apart from its probably the most common place to find people building their bases who more than likely won’t be as friendly as you would hope.

Secondly, we have the snow the biome in which it is quite cold during the day and gets to extreme temperatures at night in which you take can take large amounts of damage. Also, hemp does not naturally occur here so cloth could easily end up a problem for you. This is normally a less populated region due to the cold so less chance of finding yourself based next to a clan base.

Finally, the desert has extreme heat in the day and cold temperatures at night. Quite often a great place to farm for sulfur but also many clans seem to set up camp in these areas. Cloth is once again a problem however in desperate times cacti can provide small amounts of cloth as well as some food in the form of cactus flesh. The open landscapes, which are associated with the desert, allow for little cover but large flat areas for large-scale bases to be built.

It is advised that you do not go swimming in the cold (ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT) or in the desert whilst its night without a hazmat or a wetsuit. Cold temperatures + being wet will make you very cold and you will lose health fast!

A common mistake is to build in areas right next to large monuments, which can often lead to constant door campers, and encounters with groups which will be able to easily overrun a solo player. When the ‘perfect place’ to live is not an option due to other players already taking over the landscapes so sometimes the best option may be to base in a quiet place with access to the water to allow for easy boat access to travel to the vast amounts of resources available in other areas of the map.
Boats
In the game there are currently 2 methods of water transport. The basic 'Row boat' and the more advanced RHIB (Rigged hulled inflatable boat)
These two methods of transport are great for getting around the map if there is ease of water access to where you wish to go

The 'row boat' isn't technically a row boat as it uses an engine, however, to spawn one as an admin you type in console "spawn rowboat"

How do I fuel my boat?
Both boats require lowgrade fuel to be inserted near the drivers seat before the engine can be turned on and the boat can be used. In the row boat the fuel is stored at the back and in the RHIB the fuel is stored beneath the driver. The RHIB, whilst faster, uses alot more lowgrade fuel than the rowboat. The RHIB can also fit in 2 extra players inside compared to the row boat. The row boat can transport 4 players and the RHIB can transport 6. Both boats also come with storage compartments, the row boat has a small box of space at the front whilst the RHIB has a large storage space at the front

Where can I find a boat?
The rowboat will spawn alongside beaches across Rust island but will not spawn in snowy areas. The RHIB will spawn further out in the ocean near 'floating junkpiles'. These floating junkpiles offer the same loot as roads but in the water. The RHIB will also be found at the back of the Cargo Ship event so players can evacuate the ship

The patrol helicopter
By about now after wondering around Rust island I'd assume you have already heard the buzzing of a helicopter patrolling the island and possibly shooting at other players or you

This helicopter periodically comes into the map every few hours and will shoot players if they have more than two pieces of clothing on (It doesn't matter what they are! A hazmat is ok) and / or if they have a gun on their hotbar (this includes shotguns and the crossbow but the bow is ok)

If the helicopter does become aggroed to you and you don't want it to be then the only way to get the helicopter off of you is to either die to it or be out of its sight for long enough

What happens if I shoot at the helicopter?

If you have an adequate window floor with metal embrasures and a door to hide behind when the helicopter rockets, you are able to destroy and loot the helicopter. To first get the helicopter aggroed to you you either need to, have the helicopter get close to you or hit it with a weapon. Sniper rifles such as the bolt action rifle (bolty) are best for this

Technically the helicopter can be taken down with any weapons but I would advise only using the Semi automatic rifle (SAR) or above. The AK is the most common weapon players will take down the helicopter with but if you get one from a previous helicopter, the m249 light machine gun is the best to use as of its high damage and 100 round capacity magazine. Players may also use the LR-300 to attack the helicopter with but I would not advise this as the LR has a lower durability than the AK and has a larger bullet drop (bullets will not go as far before losing velocity)

Here is a video of Wilsonator taking out the patrol helicopter solo
https://youtu.be/grEict2xhK8?t=467

Always aim for the rotors when fighting the helicopter as it does ALOT more damage! Also the faster you take it out the less likely it will fly away or destroy alot of your base

Please note in the video that Wilsonator tried deauthing from TC to stop the heli rocketing, this no longer works

Once it is down

Once the helicopter has been taken down a marker will display on the map to show players where the heli has gone down so they can counter for the loot

The loot from the heli, as well as its carcass will be on fire for 5 - 10 minutes after it is destroyed. Once the loot boxes are no longer on fire you can loot them. Heres the loot table for the helicopter
https://rustlabs.com/entity/helicopter-crate

As you can see the helicopter can provide, C4, Rockets, M249 and much more so it is definitely worth taking
The 'dead' helicopter parts can be harvested using a pickaxe, this gives: Metal fragments, high quality metal and charcoal
The Chinook
Another helicopter that periodically flies overhead Rust island is the chinook. This heli will drop a loot crate at a tier 1 (or higher) monument that needs to be hacked for 15 minutes before looting. The chinook will also shoot at players but it is far less accurate and painful compared to the Patrol Helicopter so you are not likely to take much damage if it does choose to shoot at you - it will not care what gear you have or what you are wearing

Once the crate has been dropped at a monument (Sometimes the chinook comes into the map and doesn't drop a crate) it will display a marker on the map of where it is has dropped the crate. Whilst flying overhead the chinook will also have its own map marker so you are able to track its movements and guess where the crate will drop

Once the crate has dropped a player will need to hold E on the codelock on the side to start the hacking process. This will take 15 minutes and a timer in the form of a laptop will display on top, shooting the laptop will slightly increase the time left until the crate is opened

This crate will normally be contested by many players so depending on the monument you will want a good camping spot if you choose to try and take the loot.
Here is the loot table for the Chinook crate. https://rustlabs.com/entity/hackable-crate
The Cargo Ship
Once again the Cargo Ship is another event that periodically comes to Rust island. This one does not fly however, it circles the island on the waters

Similarly to the Chinook it too has its own map marker and when boxes are present on the ship they will display with it's marker

Also like the chinook, the Cargo Ship has hackable crates upon it, up to 4 can spawn on it on one occasion below and above deck. Military, brown and Elite boxes will also spawn on the ship to provide extra loot
This loot does not come for free however, players will have to board the ship using a boat - RHIB's work much better as of their speed. And whilst doing this have to also fend off hostile scientists that protect the Ship's contents

To board the boat players will need to press E on the conveniently placed ladders on either side of the boat. If you are protecting the boat from invaders you will want to watch these!

Once the cargo ship has done patrolling the map it will begin to leave. You will be alerted to when it is leaving by the deafening sounds of sirens, shortly after large amounts of radiation will swallow you up - at this point you will want to get off of the ship! Luckily there is an escape vehicle at the back of the ship - A RHIB

To release the boat from its storage you need to hop in the drivers seat and press the "release" button on the storage compartment

This event is extremely worth going to if you are able to board it without being killed. A lot of loot can be had here and defending it is much easier compared to other events provided you can protect the ladders up

Here is a video of Blooprint taking Cargo ship
https://youtu.be/SiE7LuTvnrU?t=323
Airdrops
The most common and unforgiving event of them all, the Airdrop.
Also commonly called the Supply Drop, The airdrop event happens once per in game day with a plane flying high above Rust island that then drops a box of goodies down to the players beneath.

The airdrop will slowly descend with a parachute until it reaches the ground

Here is a video of Wilsonator fighting for an Airdrop
https://youtu.be/PBL0ZVM5wJM?t=480
Please note he is playing a 2x gather server

Here is the loot table for Airdrops
https://rustlabs.com/entity/supply-drop

Player called Airdrops
Players can also call in their own airdrops if they get their hands on a Supply Signal from looting a military crate.

These will emit purple smoke and then eventually a plane will come overhead and drop an airdrop within a short radius of where you deployed it
