GNR 'C1' 4-4-2 'Atlantc'

In the latter part of the 19th century, express trains were getting longer, heavier and slower. The reason they were getting slower is that the 'Single' locomotives, produced by Patrick Stirling, were not up to chuff with the trains of the era. Even when run double head, they could not haul the longer trains fast enough due to the added weight of the second locomotive.

In 1898, Stirling's successor, Ivatt, decided to produce a new breed of express passenger locomotive for the East-Coast Mainline. By this point the single driver locomotives of the 1870s and 1880s were long out of fashion, and even the brief revival of the single in the late 1890s due to sanding gear didn't impress Ivatt.

Ivatt went by newer standards and proceeded to produce a 4 coupled engine, similar to 4-4-0s of the time running on the LNWR and LSWR, however he wanted a large firebox to produce as much steam as possible, so the logical inclusion of an axle beneath the firebox and cab was added, creating one of the first true 'Atlantic' types.

The 1898 Atlantic, the 'C1', soon to be called the 'Small Boiler' atlantic for very obvious reasons.

It had a small boiler.

So in 1907, Ivatt revisited his design and beefed up the design of the engine to include a much larger boiler on a similar sized chassis with slightly larger wheels. This proved to create a more powerful and faster engine, however with increased weight came lower route avaliability.

These are the two Atlantics included in this mod, the large and small boilered 'C1'. In-game they are balanced relatively equally, with the Large Boiler being slightly the better engine for fast high-speed running, but with the lighter weight of the small-boiler loco lending itself more to short but fast stopping services.

The stats as follow reflect the Large Boiler model of 1907. The Small Boiler is simply just a little bit weaker and lighter. Speed is identical.
