1st: level 6 boost is a hard cap. A bit obvious, but this means a level of boost is being wasted by combining a level 3 drift with a level 4 item.
2nd was less obvious. On some occasions, more ground can be covered in a given time by NOT overlapping or combining boost events. It literally made the difference between losing to and beating Roulette Road's Expert. In that case, the slower 'combining' strategy involved activating L4 immediately after a dash pad before the straight located before a bend that leads to the zig-zag path between the card tables. The faster 'separation' method placed the L4 item boost after an L3 wore off, in the middle of the card tables. Character: Shadow
