Introduction
Lighting up zombies? Beside slicing them with saw blades, one of the most joyful options to take them out.

However, in this case you need to light a total of 15 zombies on fire in order to get the achievement awarded.

As emergency flares only show up on certain locations throughout the game, it is advised to not miss them nor waste them.
Emergency flare
Turned on by grabbing it with the gravity gun, the flare will maintain its heat source for a certain amount of time depending on user behavior.


  • In general a flare will provide light for exactly 30 seconds.

  • Lighting up targets reduces the lifetime as it`s lowering the heat of the component.
General tips
  • You can either toss the flare (resulting in a flare gun) or approach closely to the target in order to ignite it. Last option might be faster, but you run the risk of getting the flare knocked out of your hands. (especially when dealing with Zombines)
  • Headcrabs dont count !
  • Try igniting at least 3 zombies per flare.
Chapter 3: Lowlife - Location 1


After fighting a few regular zombies, you find yourself in a pitch-dark corridor looking for an air shaft. The very first flare you encounter in it doesnt matter as it just takes to long to get out of the duct.





Once you get out, a fence, which has been damaged at the top, encloses various items including a flare. Ensure you removed the car blocking the door before you pick it up.
Chapter 3: Lowlife - Location 2
Once the Zombine appeared, the next location is in front of you. There are 2 flares, one on the left close to a dead body, one on the right in a white van.



As soon as you got the light back, more targets will spawn. Pick up the flare in the chamber, where the power supply is located.

Chapter 3: Lowlife - Location 3
Once you finished dealing with antlions in the destroyed parking garage, Gordon and Alyx will approach the last location.

7 flares can be obtained in this room:




The first one is placed on the right side when you enter the hall.








You cant miss the 2nd and 3rd flare as they are very close to the elevator.









As seen from the elevator the next flare is on the left side, behind a locked fence







Just a few more steps ahead from the last position will take you to a damaged fance, including number 5 and 6.







You will face the last flare as you enter the electricity chamber.

Chapter 4: Urban Flight


In case you still need a few burning zombies in order to get the achievement awarded, there is another location at the very end of chapter 4 in the hospital.








There are 2 flares next to the right door, where the zombies breach through.

Thanks man I was so confused on how to do it since loading back on saves resets progress unlike in Half life 2

After the first time you meet a Zombine, there will be a large battle, there are two flares you can grab and light up around 4-6 (4 being the minimum, by now you should have atleast 12).

Go into the small room where you have to switch on the power again, be prepared to burn the three zombies headed after you interact with the power box. And done!

If you missed any by the time you interact with the second power box, you can just get it at the elevator section.

I got it done in the area you first battle after encountering the first Zombine.

Start a new game in the chapter Lowlife,
Run through the first area, disable all the mines, go into the ventilation shaft and pick up the flare, run back to the beginning area and you can burn around 3-4. (Location 1)

After you go through the vents to shoot the padlock and open the door for Alyx in the second location, move the car out of the way, grab the flare and you can burn around 4-5, try to memorize their locations. Quick save if need so you can retry.

Who use the cheat of White Fire (below my comment) and dont know how to reenable the Ai again to finish the level, it is ai_resume.

Another cheat that can be a huge help is ai_disable.

I was struggling in Location 2 because the zombies would gang up on Alyx and kill her every time I went to look for the flares. This got annoying, so I used ai_disable to make her stay in the previous location. It also froze the zombies in place, which meant I could set fire to large groups at once without any danger. I got about 11 or 12 in one go. Made the achievement really easy. Maybe too easy. Oh well.

Thanks for the detailed information! With the help, I was able complete this one with the flares available in locations one and two of Lowlife.

Helps to count the zombies as you ignite them. And don't forget to save often, and backtrack to pick up flares to use.

You shouldn't disregard the first flare in the duct - you can light up up to 4-5 zombies with it (if you know where to look for them). With both flares you can get up to 7 zombies (including a new spawned one and the one attacked by antliones) in the first location. After that with both flares at the second location you can complete the achievement, so you won't have to bother with it at the elevator stand-off.
Saicomantis seems to be right about crawling zombies not being counted towards achievement.
