introduction
free DLC
the free DLC are automatically installed if you install thehunter call of the wild, that's why i don't include them in this list.
(apparently there is a bug that does not install them, if that happens manually install them)

purpose
this guide is meant to introduce new (and old) players to the paid DLC.
the list of DLC is expanding over time. so it can be daunting is choose which one you need and which one you can buy later or if you're on a budget, not buy at all.

i will collect different opinions from the reviews and forums, as well as my own.
i do not agree with every "common opinion".

the summary section will explain if and why you will need the DLC and how important it is to enjoy the base game.

this list in't just one big review, it's meant to provide new players with insights behind each opinion as well. later on i will also include more details about each DLC. as well as screenshots.
this guide certainly will evolve.

Tents & Ground Blinds
tent and ground blind DLC
the tent DLC is the first one on this list.

it's a DLC that has been plagued with bugs in the past. that's why the reviews are mixed.
at the moment of writing this the biggest bugs are fixed though.

common cons

- the ground blinds are seen as useless by many.
- setting up a tent scares away the animals.
- it's expensive to buy additional tents.
- they take up a lot of inventory space.

common pro's

- having a spawn point while traveling to get back where you started is very useful.
- having additional spawn points near hot zones is very useful.
- the ground blinds can be used with some missions.

personal opinion

i have played the game without tents and that's perfectly possible.
the tents are IMO mainly very useful if you travel and you want to start again at the place you stopped.
instead of the nearest spawn point.

summary
the tent DLC is a good quality of life improvement and still usable late in the game.
but it isn't absolutely needed to play.

(inside of one of the tents)

things you might want to know

- the tents take a lot of storage space, that's why the backpacks are useful if you want to take more stuff with you.

- the ground blinds have a roof on them so it's hard to use them for bird hunting. it's also hard to shoot uphill.

- you can't lie down in the ground blinds for easier shooting.

- you can place a limited amount of tents and ground blinds in your maps.

- the normal tents do not provide additional cover, ground blinds do.

- there are a few missions in which you need to shoot something from a hunting stand, you can also do this from a ground blind. the advantage of ground blinds is that you can place it anywhere you want. while the hunting stands are stationary.

- tents are useful if you want to find animals faster, animals spawn mostly away from the outposts, but you can place a tent everywhere you want.

ATV SABER 4X4
ATV DLC

the ATV DLC has mixed reviews, some dislike it because they think it should be in the base game.
and there are probably older reviews out there from the times that it burst into flames all the time.
this can still happened but is much rarer and more justified. (hitting tree's too many times)

common cons

- should be in the base game
- isn't usable for hunting because you scare away the animals in a wide distance around you (about 300 meters)
- less usable in rough terrain

common pro's

- very useful for exploring the map, especially because the base walking speed is very low.
- possible to have races in multiplayer

my opinion

the ATV DLC is very useful if you want to explore, especially if you just got a new map. or you are a new player.
they're a lot less useful in most of medved taiga.
and i myself never really use them to hunt. because it scares the shenanigans out of the animals.

they can also ruin your multiplayer experience (people racing around and scaring all the animals), that's why a lot of players turn them off if they host a reserve.

summary
the ATV DLC isn't needed to enjoy hunting.
but it really improves the exploration side of the game.

things you might want to know

- if you repeatedly crash into things the health of the ATV will degrade and it will explode.

- space-bar exits you from your ATV.

- with L you can turn the lights off and on of your ATV.

- if you hit a animal with the ATV you will take damage but the animal won't. no roadkill sadly.

- you can enter first person with C.

- if you want to get somewhere to hunt, park your ATV from about 300 meter distance and then walk, at least, if you want to see any animals.

- if you get charged you can turn on the ATV and the animal will almost certainly go away. (except for wolves)

- if you get off your ATV buffalo sometimes will change from being scared to attacking you. be warned!

additional screenshots

edits:
- water is now much more reasonable. no exploding anymore.
- deleted screenshots of old fixed bug.

Medved-Taiga
Medved-Taiga

medved taiga currently has very positive reviews.

common cons

- too much moooooose.
- certain species are too easy to spot in the snow.
- terrain is seen as all very similar by some.
- some species are also in other maps.

common pro's

- very beautiful.
- very big.
- new animals
- lynx is very challenging to hunt.

personal opinion

medved taiga is a very big map. it adds interesting species and more animals will probably be added.
some missions are not child friendly, just like the taiga.
i find myself sometimes getting bored sometimes though with all that white. it's very white, but that's to be expected of course.
the map is very nicely build, and i personally enjoy the soundtrack a lot.

summary
medved isn't needed at all to enjoy the base game.
it is a very nice addition though if you're done with the old maps.

(toilet with view)

things you might want to know

- it's hard to start out in medved, if you're new to the game it's better to start in layton and get bigger weapons. most animals require big calibers.

- the bears are very aggressive. if you play COTW to relax don't play medved.

- you change reserves by going to the map and click "H" then select the reserve you want to go to.

- if you want easy long range shooting, go to the biggest lake and place a tent there. you can teleport, walk around over the middle and shoot animals on the beach. lot's of bears, reindeer and moose there.

Weapon Pack 1
weapon pack 1

the first weapon pack has currently very positive reviews.

common cons

- bows are very hard to use without sights.
- the crossbow sights are hard to get used to.
- the crossbow blocks much of the screen.

common pro's

- bows are challenging to use.
- crossbow is very strong.
- the rabbit rifle is very fun to use, fast shooting.

personal opinion

the weapons are really good if you are done with the base game, mastered everything and are up for a challenge.
but they don't provide a easy hunting experience.
the crossbow i found hard to get used to but i'm one of the few.
the small caliber rifle is great for hunting birds.

summary
the weapon pack is not needed to enjoy the game, rabbits are hunt-able with other weapons too.
but they provide a challenge and are great if you are done with the base weapons.

(jackrabbit)

things you might want to know

- you still have to buy the ammo, but the weapons you get for free if you buy the DLC.

- you get different skins of each weapon, they all behave the same.

- the crossbow with the biggest bolts is a powerhouse, use it to hunt moose and you will almost certainly get a kill, if you hit the vitals that is.

- the crossbow will let you hunt big game without unlocking it. which is advantageous for a beginner.

Wild Goose Chase Gear
Wild Goose Chase Gear

the goose chase gear DLC has currently mixed reviews on steam.
mainly because of bugs with the decoys.

(the geese themselves are included in the base game, not DLC)

common cons

- it was plagued with bugs in the past.

common pro's

- it's easy to grind for cash with this DLC
- it improves the geese hunting a lot
- it's also easy to grind experience points which is great for new players.

personal opinion
the ground blinds are very usable for geese hunting because you can look up in them, unlike the tents. i myself didn't experience a lot of bugs but some people do.
the only bugs i encountered myself where in multiplayer.
i found the shotgun not that useful myself compared to the ones we already have, but others are very positive.

summary
the goose gear isn't needed to enjoy the base game.
except for geese hunting, that's very difficult without this DLC

things you might want to know

- it is possible to hunt geese without this DLC, you have the caller in the base game. you can call them down and shoot them. it's just way easier with this DLC.

- you can't destroy the decoys with your rifle.

- you have to buy additional decoys with in game currency.

- place the decoys in a field, most corn fields will do, you don't have to place more than 20 decoys if you want max attraction.

- the shotgun has just two shots but one of the fastest reload times of all shotguns.

- others can't pick up your decoys in multiplayer.

- statistics of the shotgun: link wiki[thehuntercotw.fandom.com]

Vurhonga Savanna
vurhonga savanna link

the vurhonga savanna DLC currently has mixed reviews on steam, this can change because the map just came out.
and some negative reviews are not about the map but rather expectations.

note: an later update added lions to the map.

common cons

- the added gun you need to buy with in game currency.
- a lot of wel known animals are not present on the map. (crocodiles, elephants)
- the new gun can only be equipped with a red dot.
- the limited drawing distance (500m) combined with the flat landscapes of vurhonga is a issue.

common pro's

- the map is large.
- beautiful

personal opinion

but my first impressions are good. the map is beautiful. the missions start well.
that you need to work for the gun is rather a pro than a con for me. finally something to work for.
i get that people think it's bad that you can't hunt all the well known animals though. but i respect the developers decision.

they later added lions however.

i feel that i must add that a lot of reviews are very personal observations of the map. i would check the reviews to see if you spot anything that might be a issue for you.

summary

a well made map but it does not contain all the animals that some people expected.

(the overview from the first tower at dawn)

things you might want to know

- the rifle added will let you hunt big game as a beginner.
- the big gun you get with the reserve cost 90000 in in game currency.
- if you're a person that constantly crouches, well because of the tall grass maybe stand op now and then too.
- the new gun can only be equipped with a red dot. and the new red dot fits only on the new gun.
- the price of the king rifle has changed after a few updates, and there is a new caller added, which makes some reviews outdated.
- the map has wide plains in the middle and swamps and scrub forests in the edges.

additional screenshots

Duck and Cover Pack
Duck and Cover Pack

when writing this the DLC has just been added and not a lot of reviews are in yet.
but so far things seem to be positive.

common cons

- shotgun isn't very different.
- shotgun has limited ammo capacity.

common pro's

- the decoys attract the ducks really well.
- the new hunting blinds are useful.

personal opinion
i wasn't too keen on getting this DLC. but i'm pleasantly surprised. the new hunting blinds are very nice. and hunting ducks with decoys is a lot of fun.

the shotgun isn't useful at all though. the second main game shotgun is just as good if not better.

summary

DLC with a very tight focus. if you like duck hunting get it. but don't do it for the shotgun.

things you might want to know

- picking up ducks with your back to the water will prevent you from accidentally picking up decoys.

- placing decoys and blinds on different places in the map together with tents and traveling between them makes for easy XP and money.

- if you buy extra decoys, only buy one type. that way they take less storage.

- if you buy decoys, keep in mind that you automatically get 10 decoys at once. don't be stupid like me and buy 95 decoys.

- you need 15 decoys for maximum attraction. more is overkill and useless.

(you can get a lot of ducks in one go. a duck is about 300 moneys. go figure)

(there are different group sizes. varying from about 5 to 20 ducks)

Parque Fernando
Parque Fernando

(there was a crash for people with AMD graphics card but i fix is out!)

common cons

- hunting structures are loud.
- lot of reskinned animals.

common pro's

- map looks really nice
- the first animal interaction is a good addition (puma VS prey)
- the missions are interesting.
- the hunting blinds are nice.

personal opinion

i think parque fernado is a good addition to the maps, it offers a quality gameplay change and the interaction between puma's and prey is a welcome addition. and of course the map looks amazing.

summary
although the map had a rocky start with the AMD issues all seems good now. this map adds animal interactions, the puma will chase after prey animals, who will flee. it won't kill them though. only chase.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1590000512

things you might want to know

- the hunting blinds are noisy if you walk in them. but they provide a better view over the reserve than the blinds of other maps.

- the map also features a building in which a new animal appears when you shoot a diamond. it's not as advanced as the trophy lodge though.

additional screenshots

Weapon Pack 2
weapon pack 2 DLC link

the second weapon pack that adds 3 new guns. it currently has very positive reviews.
keep in mind that it does not have a lot of reviews, need more!

common cons

- mixed opinions about the mosin
- the guns are too niche.
- shotgun shells aren't everyones favorite.

common pro's

- the guns are interesting in usability
- some people really like the mosin (zaggiDK)

personal opinion
it seems like it's a lot of personal preference. some people like the new guns, and some don't.
personally i really like the mosin.

summary
the guns are niche, and aren't needed to enjoy the game. but some people really like them.

things you need to know

- hold R to change ammo type.
- if you hunt without UI. if the second aiming bit is up on the drilling it's in rifle mode.
- you can remember which is shotgun and which is rifle by the fact that shotguns are meant for close up. so you need better view of your surroundings, (you see more with only the little ball reticle)
- the guns you will get in the game for free if you buy the DLC
- you will still need to buy the ammo
- the guns will give you an advantage as a new player because you get big game hunting weapons without needing to unlock anything.
Trophy Lodge Spring Creek Manor
lodge DLC store page

the trophy lodge DLC is a much requested DLC for COTW.
at the moment of writing the DLC has very positive reviews.

it's worth noting that the DLC is still in being updated, things like the price to place animals will probably change.

common cons

- should have been in the base game, should be free.
- cost too much IG currency to add animals
- it's it's own map. not part of an existing map.

common pro's

- a lot of space in the lodge (it's big)
- a must have / much requested

my opinion

a much requested DLC that adds a lot more gameplay value. one of the few must have DLC's.
not a lot of bugs. but it adds a little grinding. especially if you add more than only diamonds to the lodge.

the question also is if such an important feature should be paid DLC.

summary

adds a lot of gameplay value. but it has some flaws.

things you might want to know.

- you have to save animals in the harvest screen. you can only save a certain amount. so it's good to either keep space there. or keep money around for if you get that one must have animal.

- you can also taxidermies animals from the harvest screen. this costs in game currency.

- you visit the lodge from the special menu. press M. then go to the trophy lodge submenu.

- steam friends can visit your lodge

- press V in the lodge to place trophies.

- an additional menu pops up to manage your trophies if you're in the lodge.

- users report that you're able to hear animals in the lodge. they're not ghosts but rather animals walking around the lodge.

Treestand & Tripod Pack
tree stands DLC link

the tripod and tree stand DLC adds deployable tents and tree stands to the hunter call of the wild.

at the moment of writing it has very positive reviews. but it doesn't have many.

common cons

- expensive in ingame currency.

common pro's

- useful for thick foliage
- works

personal opinion

more useful than the basic hunting stands found on each map due to you being able to place them everywhere. can be useful, but not a necessity.

the treestands are deployable on very few trees, i personally do not bother with them, i only use the tripod ones.

summary

a useful DLC. but if you don't hunt passively it's not needed. if you like to hunt a lot from tents or blinds this is a much better alternative.

things you might want to know

- hunting from a blind or other deployable or buildable stand now gives you less hunting pressure.

- buffalo's or other aggressive animals can't hurt you from these stands.

- they make sound when deployed.

- you get 3 of each type, if you want more you will have to buy them with in game currency.

- a bug can sometimes put the items back in your inventory and give you the infamous "a beaver felled a tree on your structure" screen. it's best to deploy your items differently if you put it back.

- pressing space bar while looking down will let you exit the stands.

- looking at the seat of your tree stand and pressing the button will let you exit it.

- you can't fall or jump out of the tree stands.

Yukon Valley
yukon valley DLC link

the yukon valley is a Alaska based reserve map for call of the wild.

it currently has very positive reviews.

common cons

- mostly large game.

common pros

- beautiful

- changing weather is appreciated.

- enough new animals.

- good population balance.

- new weapon is nice.

features

4 new animals: Greywolf, Grizzly, Harlequin Duck, Karibu.
2 existing animals: red vox, moose.

dynamic weather (changes from snow to no snow and back)

new gun: 300 magnum rifle.

summary

a good reviewed reserve with interesting new features. a good buy if you've finished the existing maps or want some change. new features like dynamic weather as well as a more diverse landscape make for more dynamic play troughs.

Saseka Safari Trophy Lodge (wip)
Saseka Safari Trophy Lodge link

reviews

the lodge has mixed reviews. but also very little. and these are mostly because of bugs that where present at release. we need more reviews people!

common cons

- buggy (fixed)
- few places for small animals

common pro's

- big in size and volume
- big plaques for multiple animals

summary
adds a lodge which is seperated from the maps.
you can travel trough it and to the lodges of your steam friends to check out and add animals using in game currency. the lodge is africa themed.

what you want to know

press M to access the menu and select "trophies" to add, taxidermize and remove trophies.

high tech hunting pack
high tech hunting pack

reviews:
overall perception is "very positive" as of winter 2020.

common cons
- night vision adds limited value on the topic of visibility as this is already quite good without it.
- tracer arrows are too expensive (in game currency)
- the bow sight weights too much.

common pro's:
- bow sight adds a lot of value, is useful.
- the night vision is useful for spotting tracks and animals at night.

notes
the bow sight's weight is most likely done to balance it's value to the player in the game.

overview.

the high tech hunting pack offers night vision sights, tracer arrows, a new range finding bow sight, a new bow and night vision binoculars.

opinion/tips

the high tech huntting pack offers great value if you like bow hunting but you're also lazy. (like me)
the range finding sights make bow hunting way easier. (too easy for some) and the tracer arrows make night hunting easier too. they can also be used to mark spots that you need to remember. but their visibility is limited in full sunlight.

the bows itself are not much better than existing bows but can be used to "cheat the system" and get access to a powerful bow without needing to level up. the arrows offer the same added value that way as you don't need to level for them.

the night vision items are not clearly useful for everyone. some might like them. some might not. they don't work in broad daylight which is an issue for me personally. look up zaggiDK's video for more info.

tracer arrow. the glowing effect is limited in this picture but is great at distance at night.

the night vision bino's at night.

range finding bow sight.
weapon pack 3.
weapon pack 3 link

the weapon pack 3 adds new weapons to the hunter cotw.
the Eckers .30-06 Bolt-Action Rifle, the Vasquez Cyclone .45 Big Bore Air Rifle, and the Andersson .22LR Semi-automatic Pistol.

con's

- boar rifle has no place among the other rifles.
- boar rifle has short range.

pro's

- pistol has fast fire rate.
- pistol uses same ammo as the rabbit rifle (22)
- bore rifle gives you a deer killing rifle without leveling.
- eckers is a better 7mm (to some)

features:

Eckers .30-06 Bolt-Action Rifle, a rifle slightly stronger than the solokin (mosin) and better range, the Vasquez Cyclone .45 Big Bore Air Rifle. a short range air gun for deer and lower, and the Andersson .22LR Semi-automatic Pistol, a fast shooting rabbit pistol.

opinion/summary.

the usability of this weapon pack depends on your level and preference. as well as what animals you like to hunt. i've enjoyed using the eckers and pistol. but this is different for everyone.

if you want to try something else than the bow for stealthy short range hunting. the boar rifle might be useful. if you like to quickly pop ducks and rabbits the 22 is certainly gonna be fun. and the eckers is great if you're low level or want an alternative to either the solokin or the 7mm. as it is something in between.

Cuatro Colinas Game Reserve
Cuatro Calina link

common cons:
- lot of very similar animals (to some)

common pros:
- well executed environment.
- looks authentic (for spanish people).
- horns are well done on the goats.

content summary.
a new map with a varied landscape with farm fields, mountain sides and rivers/lakes. as well as forest.
a mission rewarded weapon skin?

the map is set in spain.

animals:
4 goat species.
european hare.
red deer.
boar.
iberian wolf.
mouflon sheep.

opinion/summary

although the animals seem basic, the strength is in the map/environment, which is bigger in land mass than any other map until now.
it's a varied hand crafted landscape, due to the diverse terrain and height differences.

screenshots

Smoking Barrels Weapon Pack
Smoking Barrels Weapon Pack link

reviews

common cons:

- i don't know what a muzzle-loader is.
- early release bugs (fixed)
- shotgun has just 3 rounds capacity

common pro's

- grand does "ping"
- the shotgun is powerfull enough for the biggest game.
- i know what a muzzle-loader is.

summary

this weapon pack adds the M1 grand (under a different name for copyright reasons)
a classic high caliber shotgun with all ammo types and a 3 round capacity. and a classic black powder muzzle loader. with various skins.

opinion

the black powder rifle doesn't excel at anything but is for those who want to challenge themselves. the shotguns adds to the game because it's the only shotgun who's slugs can kill the highest class of animals. and the M1 grand weights less than the eckers (and uses the same ammo type) it's also semi automatic and a 5 round clip size.

additional information

- the blackpowder rifle is based on old civil war era rifles. before the introduction of the shell casing to rifles. this is why it has a lengthy reloading process. as you have to put in the powder, wad, a "bullet" and another wad in order to load it.

screenshots

Silver Ridge Peaks
Silver Ridge Peaks

common reviews. 27/06/2020

cons
- too many animals.

pro's
- turkeys and bighorn sheep (much requested)
- beautiful landscape.
- well populated.

summary
a beautiful map, the map designers know what they're doing. based on the rocky mountains.
with the map you get the longbow. a bow that is actually pretty decent and not that heavy.

issues with the map are that for some hardcore players there are too many animals (for casual players that's actually a positive)

reviews.
overall reception is very positive as of 13/12/2020

common cons.
- animals are bare-bones "reskins".
- simple missions.
- no side missions.
- no thar.
- no collectibles.

common pro's.
- beautiful.
- some new animals
- good vantage points.

content summary.
a new map that has fewer missions, a lot of reskins of older archtypes, but is still beautiful environments.
the reskins are also very diverse in color variation.
also comes with a new rifle.

animals:
goats,
turkeys.
feral pigs.
sika deer.

red deer.

opinion
i think the cut down on the missions is done because very few people completed the side missions or enjoyed them.
i personally didn't.

Bloodhound. (wip)
bloodhound DLC link.

reviews (spring 2021)

common cons:

- the usual release bugs.
- adds nothing useful.
- scares animals.

common pro's

- it's cute.
- makes tracking easier.
- skill tree is nice.
- now you can turn off glowing tracks.

summary
this DLC adds a bloodhound to the game. this dog will track blood tracks for you. it will also sometimes find fresh droppings. it has a skill tree but it is relatively easy to level it up. leveling it up will make it listen better and unlock new skills, like seeing when the animal is about to be spooked, and scaring away predators.
guide on the bloodhound (not by me)

opinion

the bloodhound DLC is a fun DLC that is definitely not required to play the game. it will add new gameplay elements that have pro's and cons.

if you're a good shot the bloodhound DLC does not add that much as tracking a quick kill isn't that hard. but personally i still find it enjoyable to have.

additional information

- the bloodhound DLC released quite buggy. this is what many reviews reference.

- the dog can scare away animals but it has to be much closer than yourself. this might mainly be an issue with for example duck and bow hunts!

- making the dog lie down will hide it.

- if you make the dog lie down and then walk away it will eventually follow you.

finally.
add your own opinions

if you have points you want to add to common opinions, or things that i got wrong, please comments so i can add or edit this guide!

new DLC

if new DLC is added i will add them as soon as possible.
but not before i have used it myself and a decent amount of reviews has been added.
i will also observe the forums to see if people have common complains or compliments that i should add.

price
i didn't add the price of the DLC. if you think i should add that let me know. it's hard for me to add all the local prices though.
it's better if you click the link under the title to see for yourself.

at last

this is my first guide. i might have made a few mistakes. feel free to correct me.

what do i think of the current DLC model?
well i get that the game has to make money. and if the prices stay this low i have no issue with it.
i'm afraid though that all these DLC will scare away new players. that's why i made this guide.
and i also hope they avoid making any DLC that is needed to enjoy the game. this geese DLC is i.m.o. guilty of this already.

i found an error in the smoking barrels weapon pack part, it is not called cloth it is called wad, also you load 2 wads it is in this order, powder, wad, shot, wad, although the last one can be skipped if you dont point it down

it's a primitive gun from the DLC. you load the bullets from the muzzle. sorry not a native.
