The Sentry Gun
Before learning how to destroy a sentry gun, one must learn what one is. A sentry gun is one of the four buildings built by the Engineer. Sentry guns are powerful and most people learn that by walking right into one and dying almost instantly.

There are three sentry gun levels with each level becoming more powerful than the last.

If under effects of a wrangler, a sentry gun will:
  • Gain a temporary shield that reduces incoming damage and repairs by 66%
  • Have double the firerate of its gatling guns.
A level 3 sentry gun makes use of rockets which will occasionally hit and deal 50-150 damage.
Scout: Bonk! Atomic Punch
The Scout is probably the least effective class to deal with sentry guns mainly because of his weapons. However, there is the Bonk! Atomic Punch. The soda drink makes the scout invincible for eight whole seconds. When under the effects of Bonk! Atomic Punch, Scout cannot attack— but his teammates can. After drinking the soda drink, Scout can push into the range of a sentry gun, making all sentry fire focusing on him. His teammates can push in while the sentry gun is targeting Scout, killing the sentry easily. This is hard to pull off in pubs, but if you play with a friend, you can coordinate a push.

Scout: Pistol
Scout's scattergun becomes useless at range because the pellets just spread off everywhere, doing little damage. The pistol, however, is more accurate and does a bit more damage at range. If a Scout spots a sentry gun at range, he can try to take it out with his pistol. Most of the time this is ineffective because the Engineer has plenty of time to repair the low damage attacks.

Soldier: Peeking
The soldier can make effective use of his rocket launcher when dealing with sentries because of it's splash damage. He can peek a corner, fire one rocket, then retreat back behind the cover to do a bit of damage. Do this repeatedly and the sentry gun might go down. Another tactic is shooting your launcher around the corner while behind cover. That way, you can fire rockets as much as you want without exposing yourself to the sentry gun.

First person view.
Soldier: Long Range
The Soldier can easily kill sentry gun if out of its range. Just fire rockets directly at the sentry gun (or on a surface near it if not completely visible) to destroy the sentry gun. Hopefully your teammates will attack the sentry gun while you keep spamming rockets at it from range and the Engineer won't have enough time to repair all the damage— even if he is turtling.

Using the Direct Hit is very good for doing this method because it travels faster and does more damage. It can take out a sentry in just 2 hits. Flank around using the Gunboats and fire at the sentry from a vulnerable angle for an easy take out.

Remember, sentry gun's can't shoot straight down. The soldier is out of range not on the side, but the bottom. Even if the rocket doesn't hit the sentry directly, it will hit the ceiling above and damage the gun.

Soldier: Market Garden
A Solder can surprisingly destroy a sentry by Market Gardening it. Simply rocket jump onto the sentry gun and move in circles on top of it while bashing your shovel into the gun.

The Soldier crouches and swings his shovel into the sentry while moving in a circle around the gun.
Pyro: Rocket Reflect
If a Pyro is up against a level 3 sentry gun, (s)he can reflect some rockets back at the sentry gun— or more importantly the Engineer. Reflected projectiles deal mini crit damage and 4 mini crit rockets are normally enough to kill an Engineer. Now the Pyro's team can take out the sentry, without worrying about the Engineer repairing it.

Demolition Man: Stickybomb Launcher
The Demolition Man's stickybomb launcher is arguable the most effective weapon when going up against sentries. The Demoman can fire up to 8 stickies then remotely detonating them, doing a lot of damage. The stickybomb launcher is especially useful if a sentry is around the corner. Place 4 or 5 stickies around the corner (without exposing yourself) then detonate. The sentry will be destroyed instantly. The Engineer won't be able to repair it because it is just one big burst of damage instead of lots of small bursts. If the Demoman is out of range of the sentry gun then it is harder to take out and should ask for a Soldier to do the job. The Demoman can still try to take out a sentry at range by using charged sticky shots, but this takes a long time.

First person view.
Demolition Man: Parabolic Arc
The Demolition Man's projectiles travel in a Parabolic Arc. Demomen can use this to their advantage when taking out sentry guns. For example, a Demoman can hide behind some boxes and shoot grenades over the boxes. The grenades will fall down and damage the sentry gun. This is a good strategy because the Demoman is behind cover all this time. If continously spamming grenades with your launcher doesn't work, try using the stickybomb launcher. Shoot four or five then detonate to do one big burst of damage.

It can be used on the low ground,

On the high ground,

Or over some objects.
Heavy: Minigun
Heavy's minigun does 15% less damage to a level 2 sentry gun and 20% less damage to a level 3 sentry gun. If you are at full health, you just might be able to jump in front of the sentry gun and mow it down. Be sure to spin up while jumping to not lose momentum. If you have a medic on you, this would work even better because you have a bigger chance of killing it. If a medic ubers you, the sentry gun will probably go down (unless the Engineer knows what he is doing or a pyro reflects you). If out of range of the sentry, the Tomislav minigun will prove to be more useful because of its improved accuracy.

Engineer: Support
The Engineer cannot face a sentry gun directly but can assist his team greatly in helping. Use a sentry gun to punish enemies if they push to far forward. Use a dispenser to heal your team. Lastly, use a teleporter to get them to the frontlines faster. The teleporter is the most important because it is easier to apply continous pressure to the enemy and the sentry gun. The dispenser is the next important because it heals your team up. Most people might think a sentry gun is the most important because it kills people. However, they do not realize that teammates are walking sentry guns. It is better to have 5 people alive applying pressure than 1 immobile sentry gun.

Engineer: Destruction PDA (not serious)
The most powerful weapon to a sentry gun is right at your finger tips when you play the Engineer. Behold, The Destruction PDA! With this small remote control you can single handedly destroy a sentry gun! If only it worked on sentries other than yours...

Medic: Ubercharges
The Medic can heal people and make use of gamechanging ubercharges. Ubercharges can make the Medic and his patient temporarily invulnerable (if using the stock medi gun). This makes it easy to take out sentry guns. Your team should always use this strategy if no other method is working effectively. When attacking a sentry gun, uber right before going in range of the gun. The Medic should go in first to draw the fire away from the patient. The patient can then destroy the gun and the Engineer easily (unless the Engineer knows what he is doing then it is a little harder). Be careful when ubered as you are still vulnerable to things like knockback and stuns. Pyros can easily push you back— wasting your uber. The Holiday Punch can force you to laugh and not make use of your uber. Certain taunts like the Huntsman can stun you.

The most effective patients for ubers are Heavies, Demomen, Soldiers, and sometimes the WM1 Pyro.

Medic: Needlegun
This is basically Demoman's Parabolic Arc strategy. Just use your needlegun instead.

Sniper: Snipin'
This one is pretty simple. If you are able to go out of the range of a sentry gun, just shoot it down with your rifle. Start with a full charge shot, then fire without charging up for the most chance of taking it down.

Spy: Sapper Techniques
Most new players think Spy is the way to go to take out sentries. That is because they have yet to discover that the DEMOLITION MAN exists. You can still take out sentries with Spy, though. The most common and easy way is to wait until the Engineer is distracted (like continously repairing the sentry because of the oncoming fire). Then the Spy will backstab the Engineer and quickly pull out his sapper to sap the sentry and the Engineer's other buildings.

If the Engineer is in a corner shooting Rescue Ranger bolts at his sentry then it is best to distract him by sapping one of his buildings. If you sap the teleporter then the Engineer will go overthere to remove it— giving you time to sap the sentry and the other stuff. Use your revolver to further damage a building while under the effects of a sapper. However, a sapped sentry will take 33% less damage from any of the Spy's other weapons like the revolver.

Spy: Pestering
The Spy can pester an Engineer by repeatedly destroying a building right after it was placed by an engineer (like a teleporter entrance) or by shooting a building from far away (mainly the sentry gun). If a Spy keeps hitting a sentry gun from far away it will force the Engineer to stay close to his sentry (even if he has the wrangler because the Spy can just duck behind some cover for a few seconds). If the Engineer cannot move away from his sentry then he cannot assist his teammates in different things. The Engineer cannot move buildings or make new ones. He cannot go and get metal from boxes. He cannot move that gear up as easily without risking the life of another building. A downside from using this strategy is that the Spy won't be able to get good picks on the enemy team like their medic.

All classes: Flanking the Teleporter
Flanking the teleporter and destroying the entrance can prove to be very useful to your team. Scout can run through enemy lines with the Bonk! Atomic Punch and take out their teleporter entrance. With no teleporter the enemy will have to walk a long way just to get to the frontlines. That will make it easier Scout's team to take out a sentry gun because there won't be as much people guarding it.

A Brief Bit On Sentry Placement
Suppose you are a Demoman. You are walking along when BAM! You have just been completely annihilated by a sentry gun. When you respawn you think to yourself, Well at least I know where it is now. Then you go into position to place your stickies to take out the sentry gun when BOOM! You have just be annihilated again by the same sentry gun. You look at the freeze cam and think, Why is there a sentry there?

The best sentry spot is one that surprises the enemy. Kill a couple of people with one spot then move it to another. Keep the enemies surprised. They can't kill a sentry if they don't know where it is. If the enemy says, "Why is there a sentry there?" then you know you did a good job. Keep moving the sentry around and the enemies won't be able to destroy it.

Also, remember that
  • Sentries kill people,
  • Dispensers save lives,
  • And teleporters win games.
Thank You for Reading my Guide!
Thank you for reading my guide. It took a long time to make and I made all TF2 visuals (except destruction pda) using Source Film Maker [SFM]. I got the statistical information from the Team Fortress Wiki. I used the map Abandoned Upward for the Scout: Pistol. Please take a quick second to rate up and favorite the guide if you liked it. Rating up and favoriting it will allow more people to learn How to Destroy a Sentry Gun.
