Instead of making him not lose sanity at dusk and night, use the fact that he has little sanity to your advantage as a debuff: Make him lose sanity at a slightly lower rate/equal rate to normal characters.
THEN make it so that rick GAINS loads of sanity (AND I MEAN LOADS, like, go 20 sanity per minute or something-) from being close to a morty (or by drinking ricks.. uhm.. water..)
This way, it will make sense for ricks to play with very, very weak morty's. AND despite being ridiculously overpowered, you'll get screwed without drinking "water" (possibly causing negative effects like a screen filter or something despite giving you tons of sanity) or getting yourself a totally useless moty to tag along with you. :)
