Comprehensive Werewolf Guide [Updated December 9, 2023]
By ⓅⒶⓁ-①⑧
This guide includes everything you need to know about being a Werewolf as well as some things i discovered that no other guides contain. Werewolf is an extremely fun sub-class which is more suited toward fighter's (while Vampire is more suited toward magic users) but really anyone can become a Werewolf. Even low levels can become a Werewolf, the only difficulty for a low level player is the initial quest which is difficult when you have low health.

Apperance
You will only look like a Werewolf when you are in Werewolf form so if you don't want to mess up your current look or Vampire features don't appeal to you then Werewolf will (Vampire gives red eyes and scarred skin).
Perks & Penalties
Being a Werewolf brings a lot of perks but also introduces a few penalties.
  • With the Werewolf ultimate slotted in your bar, you will gain a bonus to Stamina regeneration.
  • Increased Stamina, Armor base movement and Sprinting speed while in Werewolf form.
  • You become a killer tank.
  • Werewolves are vulnerable to poison damage.
  • PvP'ing as a Werewolf can be difficult when you're the only Werewolf in the group because most enemies will target you first.
  • You get a 25% weakness to poison while in Werewolf form.
How To Become A Werewolf
You can only become a Werewolf by getting infected with Lycanthropy from a Werewolf or by buying it for 1500 Crowns in the Crown Store. If you don't have enough crowns then you'll need to be infected by a Player Werewolf or an NPC Werewolf but not just any NPC Werewolf will infect you, only special ones that spawn in special locations on full moons. Full moons occur approximately every 8 real days and last 1.5 real days. Server restarts also sometimes reset the moon cycle so you should check daily where the cycle is currently.

This method while sounding easy is actually very very hard. I tried getting infected via this method and aside from forgetting about the full moon, finding the correct NPC's were impossible. I wasted 2 months trying to do it this way. Finally i relented and asked in Riften's zone chat and a nice player bit me. Some players charge a fee for turning you (1000 to 4000 gold on average) and other's (like that nice player) do it for free. The main problem with being turned into a Werewolf is that player Werewolves can only do it once every 7 real days. Zenimax Online did this on purpose to balance it because Werewolves are very powerful.

If you are already a Vampire, then you can't become a Werewolf until you first cure your "Sanguinare Vampiris" (see “Curing Lycanthropy” section at the end of this guide for locations).

Once you find yourself a player who will turn you, you and that player need to go to Hircine's shrine (aka Werewolf Shrine). There is one in each faction's territory (marked on the maps below as a gift icon). You will need to stand close to the shrine and then the player turns into a Werewolf (they might first have to charge their Ultimate). Then the Werewolf player presses X on their keyboard to bite you (but only if they have unlocked the "Bloodmoon" passive skill or they have not bitten another player in the last 7 real days). Then look at the altar for a scroll, use it and enter the portal (you have 3 real days to do the quest otherwise the infection wears off and you will have to get bitten again). Once inside, talk to the NPC who will send you to kill a beast. The beast is one of 4 bosses with 100k HP. Ignore all the low level enemies in the area. The fight is very very difficult especially if you aren't used to melee combat (my first character was a healer and i spent almost an hour and died dozens of times trying to kill it). If you're having trouble defeating the boss, then the general strategy that works is this: Run in circles around the boss and avoid their attacks, when you reach their back take a swipe at them. Keep this up until you defeat them.

*These Werewolf spawn locations come from other guides.
Bite Theft
When you've found a player to bite you, make sure there is no one else around. There is a tactic malicious non-werewolf players use where they run in front of you as you're being bitten to steal your bite. This is especially bad when you paid to get bitten.

For this reason, i suggest you never ever use local or zone chat to arrange the bite. Whisper your benefactor instead.
Power Leveling Your Wolf
Your Werewolf skills only increase when you kill while in Werewolf form. This can be very difficult if you plan on doing it legitimately since Werewolf form is limited to a few seconds before you turn back to your humanoid form. Also, all enemies give the same amount of experience (for the Werewolf rank) so it's better to attack weaker enemies since they die faster.

Method 1 is a suggestion by a Steam user named "Bexi". While Method 2 combines Method 1 with Method 3 or 4. Method 3 & 4 are the fast ways to power level because the target doesnt fight back and dies in one hit. It's also possible Zenimax Online (developers of Elder Scrolls Online) will nerf it so i included the slighly longer method 5.

Method 1: WW Quest Infinite Timer
Since there's no werewolf timer in the Werewolf quest area, you can stay in Werewolf form infinitely and level up your skills. This process takes over an hour but is not ideal if you are in a rush. On average it takes 5 seconds to kill each enemy. After all the enemies in the area are killed, it takes a few minutes for them to respawn.

Method 2: WW Quest Infinite Timer & Goat Combo
Use method 1 to max out "Blood Rage" passive skill and morph "Pounce" to "Feral Pounce". Your Werewolf skill itself will need to be level 8 to get the 2nd level of "Blood Rage". Once you've done this, exit the Werewolf quest area and do Method 3 or 4.

Method 3: Oasis
This area is filled with 43 goats! (44 if you count the one walking with an npc but don't kill that one or you'll get a bounty). Goats don't fight back and they die in one hit so you can hit the whole place in under a minute. Once its clear, you can go north to find more goats (see next part after image below).

  • The BLUE circles are where you will find the goats.

Method 4: Valley
A little north of the oasis (between the Wayshrine and the Dolmen) is another large area with tons of goats. For a turbo boost of XP, join a dolmen group but stay in the Valley. Run around killing all the goats (and eating them to keep your Werewolf form active). Then when the Dolmen appears, destroy it and then go back to killing the goats until the dolmen reappears. Rinse and repeat for mega XP.

At first you will only be able to kill 10 to 20 goats before you run out of time, but as you level up Werewolf and unlock passive skills, you will be able to stay in werewolf form for much much longer.

Method 5: Crab Shore
This method is slightly harder then the previous because there aren't as many targets and they will fight back which wastes some time.

You can get your Werewolf skill to level 9 in 1 to 3 hours here (1 hour if your build is a fighter and 3 hours if your build is a healer).

  • The RED text in the crab symbol is the number of crabs in that area.
  • The GREEN + icon is the enemy you can attack to charge your Ultimate.
  • The GREEN - icon is the enemy you can attack to charge your Ultimate.

At first you will only be able to kill 2 to 4 crabs before you run out of time, but as you level up Werewolf and unlock passive skills, you will be able to stay in werewolf form for much much longer.

"Werewolf Transformation" Ability Power Leveling

The "Werewolf Transformation" ability (the ultimate that lets you transform into a Werewolf) takes much longer to level up like your other skills. Once you get it to level V; you can morph it.

The really fast way to level it up is to slot it in your ultimate hotbar but don't activate it (so you don't waste time trying to stay in Werewolf form) and do some Dolmen Farming*. The two most popular places to do Dolmen farming are "Alik'r Desert" and "Auridon". If you play on the NA server, when you get to either of those zones say "x" in chat to be invited to a Dolmen farm group. If you play on the EU server, say "+dolmen" to be invited to a Dolmen farm group. If you don't group up to attack the dolmen (but there's other players attacking it too) then you'll get around 1000XP every 2 minutes or 3000+ XP if you're in a group with at least 8 other players.

NOTE: Dolmen farming usually has a huge number of players doing it and as a result you'll have really bad FPS (10 to 20 if you're lucky) so turn down your graphics settings to get a better framerate. Even if you have a high end video card, fps will still drop dramatically.

Mini Dolmen Guide

* I won't go into deep detail how Dolem farming works but basically it's this:

Every zone has 3 Dolmen's (giant spikey rings in the sky that shoot out lightning) and the map icon looks like a whirlpool. At any one time, only 1 Dolmen is active and when its defeated, another Dolmen opens.

In "Alik'r Desert" and "Auridon" the Dolmen's always open in a counter-clockwise or clockwise order (it changes from day to day). The way you figure out which one to hit next is to go to the wayshrine closest to all your groupmates. Once you figure out the order, then just go to the next Wayshrine.

The "Alik'r Desert" and "Auridon" zones are the most popular because they have wayshrines very close to the Dolmen.
Ultimate Skill
Personally, i recommend you go with Pack Leader because it turns you into an amazing tank. The wolves respawn every few seconds and don't do very much damage but they really do a good job at tanking so you can stay alive longer.

Priority Abilities
If you have lots of skill points, then you should unlock the skills as they become available but if you don't have a lot of points, then get the skills in the following order:

  • Devour (Granted automatically at the start from Wolfhunter DLC)
  • Pounce (Morphed to Feral Pounce)
  • Blood Rage (Unlocks at rank 4 and 8)
  • Hircine's Bounty
  • Savage Strength
  • Pursuit
  • Roar
  • Piercing Howl
  • Infectious Claws
  • Call of the Pack
  • Bloodmoon
Armor
There is a medium armor set that complements Werewolves, its called "Salvation" and its pieces add the following:
  • (2 items) Adds 1096 Max Stamina
  • (3 items) Adds 129 Stamina Recovery
  • (4 items) Adds 1096 Max Stamina
  • (5 items) Salvation Reduces cost of Werewolf Transformation by 33% (ultimate costs 200). While in werewolf form Weapon Damage is increased by 150.

You can get this armor in Malabal Tor from Delve Bosses, World Bosses, Public Dungeon Bosses, Treasure Chests and quests from that zone.
Tactics
These tips will help you stay in Werewolf former longer and keep your health up.
  • While in Werewolf form you need to keep an eye on your Werewolf transformation bar at all times. If you're attacking an enemy and your bar is at 40% left and there's a weaker enemy nearby, switch targets, kill the other enemy and devour them.
  • Roar is usefull when you're low on health or you need to devour something to get some more time on your transformation bar.
  • Hircine's Bounty is critical during combat. Always keep enough magicka to use it.
  • Get Howl of Despair (which is a morph of Piercing Howl). The feeding Frenzy synergy is very useful for allies.
Getting Skill Points Fast
Once you get the gift or curse (however you want to look at it) you'll want to have 11 unused skill points so you can unlock all the active and passive skills when you get your Werewolf transformation skill high enough.

The fastest way to do this is by collecting Skyshards.

Mini Skyshard Guide

Skyshard's look like large crystals with a white light beaming up from them (every 3 Skyshards give you 1 skill point). Every zone has a bunch of them. Normally they don't appear on your map so it will be hard to find them, but if you want to find them easier, then i suggest you get the SkyShards addon.

With the Skyshard addon it will take you 1 to 2 hours on average per zone to collect all the Skyshards. Some Skyshards can be obtained in the zone itself, but most are in Delves and Public Dungeons and located at the end of the dungeon (near the door you use to get back to entrance).

If you've never heard of addons, they are modifications made by third parties that add new features to the game and they are totally allowed by the developers of Elder Scrolls Online. See this[account.elderscrollsonline.com] help article for confirmation they are allowed.

I suggest you download Minion which is an addon manager that makes downloading updates to addons extremely easy. Run it everytime before you start ESO (especially after patches) to grab the latest updates.

Download Minion From: http://minion.gg/
Download Skyshards Addon From: http://www.esoui.com/downloads/info128-SkyShards.html (title is "SkyShards" if you want to install it through Minion)

If you use Minion, you can download Skyshards and other addons (see list below) by clicking the "Search..." bar in Minion and typing in the names of the addons below that interest you (this is by far not a complete list, but its addons that i have found useful):

  • Advanced Filters
    Expands inventory sorting.
  • Advanced Filters - FCOItemSaverFilters
Adds support for FCOItemSaver addon (Only use if you install it).
  • AUI - Advanced UI
Adds new health/magicka/stamina bars, new enemy bars, new team bars, a minimap and a lot more. This can reduce FPS significantly if you leave the "Combat Stats Minimeter" on during heavy fights. I suggest you keep that feature disabled all the time (from ESC menu, click Settings->Addons->AUI (Combat)->Expand "Indicating Elements"->Set "Minimeter" to OFF. Then in chat say /reloadui
  • Bug Eater
Often when ESO is updated, addon authors have not yet updated their addon and as a result you'll get tons of errors. This addon hides them so you can continue using your mods even if they're outdated (From ESC menu, click "Add-Ons" and at the top right corner, check "Allow out of date add-ons". Using out of date add-ons can affect stability but often not by much.)
  • Dryzlers Better Rezzing
Helps you find and resurrent dead team members. If you never rez anyone, then don't bother with this.
  • FCO Item Saver
Saves items to prevent them from being sold at stores. It even allows you to lock items that can't be locked with ESO's lock option.
  • Harven's All Experience Bars
Adds experience bars so you can keep track of how close you are to leveling your character and skills. The first bar will be placed in the center of your screen. Enable mouse cursor mode (press period key) and move it to an empty spot on your hud. Right click the bar to add/remove more bars.
  • HarvestMap
Shows on your map any chests, ore, herbs, flowers, etc. It only shows ones you have found so it doesnt ruin gameplay by showing you where they all are.
  • Lost Treasure
Shows you where to find the treasures from treasure maps. A lot of the maps are infuriatingly difficult, so this will help keep you sane.
  • Master Merchant
Saves you money by showing deals on items you can purchase from other players or guild traders.
  • Merlins Heal Helper
This addon should exclusively be used by healers or anyone that spends some of their time healing. It alerts you when team members are below a certain percentage of health left.
  • NoAccidentalStealing
Prevents you from stealing things by mistake (which is really easy to do) by allowing you to steal only when you're crouched. This is useful to keep your gold to yourself since you wont have to pay a fine or get killed by guards all the time.
  • pNames
This shows in chat and on the UI the character name and/or character id of players.
  • Provisions TeamFormation
Shows you where all your team members are so you spend less time going in the wrong direction.
  • Recipe Info
Shows you which recipe's you already own. This will save you a lot of money so you dont buy already known recipes.
  • Soul Gem Notifier
Helps let you know when you receive a soul gem and when you charged a soul gem.
  • Tamriel Trade Center
Another economy plugin which is a must have. It tells you the current average for most items so you don't over pay. It uses a separate executable which submits item sales to their website. You don't have to use it, but it helps others know what you saw for sale.
  • Zolan's Junk Handler
Automatically destroys items which are worth 0 gold.
Recommended Gear
Ive been using a few different sets that really compliment Werewolf really well! This section is divided into 2 parts. Self buffs which only or mainly buff you and group buffs which buff everyone. Generally speaking, you want Tormenter set in all builds because it allows you to taunt as a werewolf and not only do you taunt but you can group taunt!

In the builds below i also describe how difficult it is to get the sets. 0 means easy and 5 means hard. The difficulty metric is based on how complicated the boss fights are.

Keep in mind you can only get monster set helmet's from veteran dungeons and the shoulder piece from the crate given by corresponding undaunted NPC)!

Self Buffs

Build 1

Archdruid Devyric's Guise (Monster Set): "When you deal damage with a Heavy Attack, after 1.2 seconds deal 650 Shock damage to up to 6 enemies within a 7 by 5 meter line on your target, applying Major Vulnerability to them for 7 seconds, increasing the damage enemies take by 10%. This effect can occur once every 15 seconds and scales off the higher of your Weapon or Spell Damage."

Note: This really helps with softening enemies for you and your group. Make sure to time it when the enemy is not about to heavy attack as you can often get one hit killed by the enemy's attack.

Set: https://eso-sets.com/set/archdruid-devyric
Where To Get: Earthen Root Enclave Dungeon (Guide: https://xynodegaming.com/earthen-root-enclave/ )
Difficulty To Acquire: 5/5 (this has a lot of puzzles and complicated boss mechanics that can wipe the group if you arent familiar or paying attention)
---
Essence Thief: Dealing damage with a Light or Heavy Attack draws essence from the enemy that pools near them for 5 seconds. Drawing from the pool heals you for 4356 Health, restores 4356 Stamina, and increases your damage done by 10% for 10 seconds. A pool can only be created once every 10 seconds.

Note: This really really helps with sustain! It not only heals you and gives you back stamina but it also increases your damage done! Only problem is the green orbs often appear around the area which means youll be moving around a lot which angers some groups. You get a cool green aura too!

Set: https://eso-sets.com/set/essence-thief
Where To Get: White-Gold Tower (Guide: https://xynodegaming.com/white-gold-tower/ )
Difficulty To Acquire: 3/5 (This is the hardest of the base game dungeons but the mechanics of all but the last boss are not too bad. The last boss is a brutally hard.
---
Tormenter: "When you deal direct damage with a Charge, Leap, Teleport, or Pull ability, you gain 3642 Physical and Spell Resistance and taunt the enemy to attack you for 15 seconds."

Note: See note at the start of this section.

Set: https://eso-sets.com/set/tormentor
Where To Get: Banished Cells I and II (Guides: https://xynodegaming.com/banished-cells-1/ and https://xynodegaming.com/banishedcells2/ )
Difficulty To Acquire: 0/5 (This is the easiest set to get!)

Build 2
Build 2 replaces "Archdruid Devyric's Guise" in Build 1 with "Mighty Chudan Guise". See Build 1 how to get the other gear sets.

Mighty Chudan Guise (Monster Set): "Adds 1206 Maximum Health, Gain Major Resolve at all times, increasing your Physical and Spell Resistance by 5948."

Note: This makes you even tankier. As a result, most bosses will do significantly less damage or in some cases no damage to you! Which means you can attack more instead of blocking!

Set: https://eso-sets.com/set/mighty-chudan
Where To Get: Ruins of Mazzatun(Guide: https://xynodegaming.com/ruins-of-mazzatun/ )
Difficulty To Acquire: 4/5 (You need to pay attention to the mechanics of the boss fights or the group will be wiped)

Group Buffs

Build 3
Build 3 replaces the Monster Set with "Lord Warden" but "Essence Thief" and "Tormenter" sets from Build 1 are still used.

Lord Warden (Monster Set): "When you take damage, you have a 50% chance to summon a shadow orb for 10 seconds that increases the Physical and Spell Resistance of you and your group members within 8 meters by 3180. This effect can occur once every 10 seconds."

Note: This only takes affect when everyone stands in the purple circle.

Set: https://eso-sets.com/set/lord-warden
Where To Get: Imperial City Prison (Guide: https://xynodegaming.com/imperial-city-prison/ )
Difficulty To Acquire: 4/5 (You need to pay attention to the mechanics of the boss fights or the group will be wiped)

Build 4
Build 4 uses "Lord Warden" Monster set and "Essence Thief" from Build 3 but also adds "Brands of Imperium"

Brands of Imperium: "When you take damage, you grant you and your group members within 8 meters a damage shield that absorbs 11260 damage for 6 seconds. This effect can occur once every 12 seconds."

Note: This gives everyone a pretty substancial shield often. It procs just about all the time so everyone will often have shields.

Set: https://eso-sets.com/set/brands-of-imperium
Where To Get: White-Gold Tower (Guide: https://xynodegaming.com/white-gold-tower/ )
Difficulty To Acquire: 3/5 (This is the hardest of the base game dungeons but the mechanics of all but the last boss are not too bad. The last boss is a brutally hard.

If you're looking for these sets, i started a ESO guild called "Gear-Farmers" on NA Server. DM me in-game for an invite! My userid is: PAL-18z
Recommendation: Playing as a Healer Werewolf
Most players warn against being a healer werewolf but they don't realize how critical this can be in some instances. See my example below:

As a healer Werewolf, you can solo bosses up to around 300,000hp. Also as Healer werewolf (especially with Pack Leader morph), you can resurrect teammates with little to no damage in situations where you would normally die. For instance a long time ago, my CP 324 Templar healer was in a Falkreath Hold group and all the other players were significantly higher level than me (around 500 CP, 800 CP and 1000 CP). We were fighting the 3rd boss which is Cernunnon. 2 teammates died right at the start outside the circle and it was just me and the tank. The tank and myself did okay for a few minutes but then she was taking too much damage so i morphed into Werewolf. The two of us beat the 3 mini-bosses (each have 1.8 million hp), i took 2 souls to the altars and then the mega boss Cernunnon appeared. At this point the tank died and i was all alone. While my wolves were distracting Cernunnon (who was ignoring them and attacking me instead), i went to the edge of the combat area and began resurrecting the closest person nearby. I took less than 25% damage from Cernunnon while doing this! Then i went back to attacking Cernunnon while the others resurrected each other and we defeated that boss with no more deaths!
Curing Lycanthropy
You can cure Lycanthropy/Sanguinare Vampiris at any time by talking to "Prelate Sabinus". He is found at the Mages guild of every faction (in Rawl'kha, Evermore, or Riften). If you later decide you want to be a Werewolf again you will have to get reinfected. All skills you unlocked will still be there so you can continue your progress. If you want to reset your skills, then you'll need to find a Rededication Shrine and pay a large sum of gold. These can be found in the capital cities of each faction (and in Vvardenfell, North of Vivec's Temple).
Changelog

@Merciful, Worse than that anytime someone turns into a werewolf usually everyone on the opposite team turns on them. This can be used to your advantage though, a "sacrificial lamb" so to speak to distract them from their objective. The werewolf should just start running toward their keep. Usually 5 to 10 people will chase them.

Just going to put this here, if you plan on playing PvP and you're a magicka user or a stamina user who doesn't plan on using any werewolf abilities, then don't turn yourself into a werewolf "just for fun"

There are a bunch of stamina users who use abilities from the fighter's guild skill line and there are two passives that are problematic for WW users. One of them gives ultimate after you kill a werewolf, vampire or an undead which puts your team at a disadvantage. The other one will increase fighter's guild abilities dmg by 20% against vampires, undead and werewolves. The majority of stamina players in PvP use dawnbreaker and if you're a werewolf it may even 1 shot you. There are also cancerous bow builds which focus on spamming silver shards and lethal arrow/snipe. Silver shards will deal an insane amount of dmg to you and you don't want to die to a bowtard.

@bexi how long did it take you to max out ww skills?
bexi Feb 13, 2019 @ 8:49pm
My recent ww alt , I tried a method not mentioned here. Fresh out of the creation screen I went and crafted some level 4 gear and had a friend ready to taxi me to a mundus stone. From there I went straight out to shrine for my bite. After completing the quest (which is far easier than the OP suggests) if you stay in the area you can continue to farm the mobs there until you have maxed out ww skill line. It does take alittle longer but the transformation never wears off so long as you stay in the quest area . Maybe not the most ideal method if you are is some kind of rush ,but not needing to be bothered with transformation timer is a nice bonus to the process.

@Andy🤹sym, As hard as it is to believe i dont think they did that because they're greedy. If they were greedy, they would be selling weapon sets and other game unbalancing things on the crown store. If the game wasnt balanced and became pay to win, then no one would play or at the very least a lot less people would play. Thats why the store has cosmetic items and DLC's only.

Great guide overall, much appreciated :)

One comment though, near the start you said "The main problem with being turned into a Werewolf is that player Werewolves can only do it once every 7 real days. Zenimax Online did this on purpose to balance it because Werewolves are very powerful." While Werewolves can be quite powerful, I'd vote it's more so that they can get more people to pay 1500 Crowns for it.
