Harsher Death Penalties

Description
Increases costs of dying to discourage 'death rushing' in difficult situations.

Features:
  • Added an experience and fame penalty (10% of current level).
  • Added a gold penalty for town resurrection matching the cost of entrance resurrection, so players don't feel the need to abuse town portals for cheaper deaths.

Resurrecting in town:
   XP: -10%
   Fame: -10%
   Gold: -10%

Resurrecting at entrance:
   XP: -10%
   Fame: -10%
   Gold: -10%

Resurrecting in place:
   XP: -10%
   Fame: -10%
   Gold: -30%

@Doomrider Correct, If there were no such things as town portals then it would actually become a tradeoff with cost vs time, but with TPs the way they are you can just throw one up each time you enter a new zone (basically for free) and get the same effect as ressurecting at the zone entrance (not counting loading screens).

Another issue with giving town resurrections a slight edge cost-wise is that some feel that they then have to pick it every time. This slight edge becomes greater the more gold and exp you accumulate since the penalty is percent based.

This mod seems to make resurrecting in town a non-option now. If you're getting the same penalty regardless of whether you go to town or the entrance of the zone, there seems to be no point to the extra travel time from town to the zone in most circumstances.

@zParticle That's great to hear as it is exactly what this mod aims to accomplish!

I still haven't really had the chance to test out the severity of the penalties so I'm open to any suggestions for tweaking the values.

Negative XP has really been a non-issue. This mod sort of forces you to change your tactics if you keep getting killed, and that's awesome. I really like the tension this adds to the game, and I find I'm approaching battles a lot more like I do with hardcore characters. Great mod!

@zParticle You are able to see how far back you are in the character screen as well as in the tooltip of the experience bar. Still, that doesn't help in explaining that you are still losing experience even though there is no apparent indication that you are.

Good point. I suppose you could bundle or collaborate with LurkerHUD so you have more control of the layout. Even a tooltip would work... just something to let you know how far you are in the hole.

@zParticle A better representation of negative experience in the HUD would be nice but a is bit problematic to do. From what little I've read about it, it seems like most all of the HUD elements are located in the same layout file, which means any HUD changes will result in a conflict with other mods making HUD changes. This will make it impossible to use this mod with any other mod also making HUD changes.

However, I think it's possible to add a new element without editing the existing layout file. In which case you can use it with other mods. The problem then is where to place this new element so that it doesn't overlap with any other element in any other mod. This is very hard if not impossible to do unless you want to place it in the middle of your screen.

I'll look into it but no promises.

@zParticle Sorry, seems I was wrong. Lone Wolf McQuade had it right, experience and fame is a flat percentage of the exp required for your current level. You will still go negative if you lose enough, as McQuade said. Guess I was confused by the differing way gold and exp/fame are calculated but not in the way they are displayed on the resurrection screen. :(

Whoa, interesting. So I could be at level 10 with "zero" experience and if I die enough I could truly be at zero experience, effectively starting over from level 1? Which means nine levels worth of experience to regain until I get any level ups or even see the bar start to progress? That is harsher. In that case I'd like to formally request a HUD update to reflect somehow when you're in negative experience so it's clear what's going on.

@Lone Wolf McQuade @zParticle Actually, the experience/fame/gold loss are all based on your total accumulation, not per level. You can get negative experience and fame relative to your level but you will never lose a level. e.g. You can have the experience of a level 9 character but still be level 10 (and this will happen if you die a couple of times).

10% may be a bit too harsh for experience and fame at higher levels so I may change the values a bit. But I need more time to test where the sweet spot is.
