Intro
Security Force Assistance Brigade is responsible to:
  • Organize
  • Train
  • Equip
  • Rebuild
  • Advise
Foreign security forces (FSF)

Traditionally, conventional forces conduct force-on-force combat operations

OEF/OIF have showed the need to transition to a force that can fight a counterinsurgency

A key part of counterinsurgency fighting is the ability to have the HN (Host Nation) take the lead

This is where the SFAB come into play

Until now, CBT (Combat Brigade Teams) Headquarters section and Line Battalions of the CBTs have taken on this role. However, they are ill prepared to fight this kind of battle. The removal of of the CBT HHC takes away ALL the leadership at the brigade level. This means that the CBTs training schedule and leadership is not present in the CBTs daily life. The Battalions are full of junior NCOs and Soldiers who are not ready to take on this specialized role.

To counter this deficiency, the Army has manned SFAB to be much leaner in personnel and with a much higher percentage of senior officers and non-commissioned officers (NCOs)

The SFAB is modelled SOMEWHAT around the Special Forces model of FID (Foreign Internal Defense) but IN NO WAY are SOF (Special Operation Forces).

They DO share the same conept of:
  • Small unit teams
  • Having all the major combat arms specialties
    • Infantry
    • Engineer
    • Medical
    • EOD
    • Communication
    • Support/Logistic Teams

With these small team, SFAB are able to be utilized as Mobile Train and Assist Teams (MTATs)
Military Advisor Training Academy

The Military Advisor Training Academy (MATA) is where Captains (or higher) and senior Sergeants (Staff Sergeants or higher) learn how to Assist and Advise

The course itself lasts 6 weeks

A cadre of 75 instructors, including some SF (Special Forces) soldiers will train the SFAB

Following the 6 week course, members will continue to learn:
  • Foreign languages
  • Cultural studies
  • Foreign weapons
SFAB Unit Structure

A toal of 6 SFABs are to be created:
  • 5 Active Duty
  • 1 Reserve

As of now 2 SFAB exist:
  • 1st SFAB
  • 2nd SFAB

SFAB will have no 'junior' enlisted Soldiers

Each Brigade will, instead be manned with 500 senior NCOs/officers

As of now, SFAB will be modeled the CBTs of:
  • Infantry
  • Armored

Each SFAB will have 3 Battalions:
  • Cavalry Squadron
  • 2 maneuver Battalions

Each Company will have:
  • Company Headquarters element
  • 3 teams of 4 trainers each
SFAB Team Structure

The SFAB will be around 6 Brigades (but more like Battalions in personnel number)

5 SFAB will be for Active Duty and 1 for the Reserve

1st SFAB
2nd SFAB

Team set-up are fluid due to operational needs and changes in mission

A model to follow is:
  • 11 man team
  • 3 vehicles

Team make up:
  • Intelligence Officer
  • Operations Officer
  • Logistics Officer
  • Executive Office
  • Team Chief (Officer In-Charge)
  • Team Sergeant (Sergeant In-Charge)
  • Operations Senior Sergeant
  • Operations Sergeant X2
  • Medical Sergeant
  • Communications Sergeant
SFAB Support and Logistics

SFAB will be operating in:
  • Small teams
  • Dispersed over large operational areas

To sustain SFAB teams they must have robust support
