Depends which structure limit you are hitting. They weigh less. In fact using a wood or stone interior for the sections not armored would save you more weight as well.

yeah I had it on creative mode but your are right people wont like wasting metal to build what is basically scaffolding, also do ceilings cost less structure points than foundations ? :) I will remember that ty. I thought it would be good if you could get in close to a pvp base and have the sides drop to shoot out of

You can get away with spacing the foundation quite a bit here. The trick is to use ceiling tiles to space. Generally you only need four foundations for the four corners and can use ceilings to space them. You should especially use cielings for any piece you plan to demolsh. In those cases you want to use something cheap and light like wood. (Thatch if it doesn't have to support anything. durring the build process.)
