How to apply Photoshop blur in SFM

This guide will guide you on how to apply Photoshop's blur on your SFM poster and gain more control over the blur!

Differences

Photoshop Blur
Pros:
- Have control
- Smoother
- Sharper focus
Cons:
- Has to render multiple renders

SFM Blur:
Pros:
- Convenient
- Easy to do
Cons:
- Doesn't look as good as Photoshop's
- Doesn't have as much focus control as Photoshop's

Examples:

i am aware that you can adjust sfm blur by resizing the slider

Rendering

Renders you'll need:

- Full poster with no blur


- Background with no blur


- Mask


If you already knew how to get the mask render, just skip to the next step.

Here's how to create a mask render.

1. Unload the map



2. Load a map called "White Void"
if you don't have the map just find it on workshop.



3. Disable all the lights



4. Render!
the mask render HAS to be the same size as other renders

Masking

I'm using Photoshop for this guide.
I don't know how to do this on any other programs but I'm sure they're all very similar.

Here's how to mask the poster:

1. Place masking layer on top of the layer with background and object
they have to and should match up perfectly

2. Select the mask layer and the Magic Wand tool and do as following in the GIF



3. Drag the clipping mask down and disable the mask layer




4. Place the layer with only background UNDER the clipped layer
and you should be able to do this:



Done! Now you have the object completly seperated from the background!

Bluring

Now let's get to the point we've all been waiting for!

Here's how to blur the background:

1. SELECT THE BACKGROUND and go to Filter > Blur Gallery > Field Blur



2. Adjust the blur as you desired. when satisfied, hit Done / OK on top
you should be left with this.

Final Editing

I edited the poster with Magic Bullet Looks
you don't have to use MBL, it's my preference.

Results:

- Photoshop Blur



- SFM Blur



You can also apply another kind of blur if you're using the Photoshop method:

It didn’t really get brighter I added blooms.

The lights are white, it’s just the skin that is yellow.
