Introduction - And possible spoiler alert!
Hollow Knight is a game focused on exploration and discovering, and in this guide we will be mentioning some NPCs, specific charms, spells and locations by name. If you consider these to be spoilers, please do not read until you have played the game enough, because we are going to start mentioning those in the next paragraph.

• ~~~~~~~~

In most cases, when new players start Hollow Knight and go exploring the world of Hallownest, they probably don't have many issues with the amount of Geo required to buy certain charms, open up Stag Stations, buy maps, toll machines to unlock benches, and anything else that requires money spending, because the exploration and discovery is more constant, and consequently it will reward the player with Geo more often.

This kind of problem usually only occurs, according to most threads on Reddit and Steam Forums, when the player is at its second or third run; trying to buy the Unbreakable Charms from Divine (which cost 9000, 12000 and 15000 Geo each) at the end-game; or even trying to get the speedrun achievements. And to be honest, everybody had some sort of trouble with Divine. So we decided to make this guide to help the community.

That being said, this guide will focus on tips for having good amounts of Geo in the majority of situations, especially when the player starts the Grimm Troupe questline to buy Unbreakable Charms (mainly Unbreakable Heart and Unbreakable Strength), because they're very useful in most situations (like the Coliseum, for example)

So, let's get started!
General Tips
These tips are useful at any point in the game.
  • Make sure to explore A LOT
There are many Geo deposits in the majority of places, and some of them are hidden in secret areas, usually behind fake walls. If you ever see one that looks suspicious (like, maybe with cracks on it), hit it with your Nail. It will make a different sound if it is indeed breakable. Plus, it never hurts to check!

  • Use the Gathering Swarm charm
This charm can be bought from Sly in Dirtmouth for 300 Geo. It will make your grinding significantly easier, as it spawns little magical flies that grab any Geo your drop and bring them to you (basically it acts as a magnet), so make sure to equip this charm while exploring Hallownest (it only costs one notch!), and remember to change it to a more battle-friendly one when fighting bosses. If you're feeling confident enough, you can make a combo with Fragile Greed to get even more Geo. Gathering Swarm is MANDATORY if you're going for speedrun achievements.

  • Get your Shade together
Be careful! When you die, a Shade will spawn on your death location, and IT WILL HOLD ALL THE GEO YOU HAD. To get it back, you have to kill the Shade. This also means that if you die again without recovering it, a second Shade will spawn, and the first one will disappear, along with the Geo it had. If you feel your Shade is in a difficult to reach spot, the safest thing to do is to return to Dirtmouth and ask Confessor Jiji to summon your Shade there (in exchange for a Rancid Egg), OR, you can try going back to your Shade, and if your health is low, quit to the title and then return (you'll be back at the last bench you've rested, with full health, and your Shade will still be in the exact same spot). The amount of health the Shade has depends on your progression in the game. As you gain more Health Masks, spells and reach new places, it will get stronger. However, if you hit it with the Dream Nail, the Shade will die instantly. It can also be killed with one hit from the regular Nail if you have the endgame-charm Void Heart. This charm will also make the Shade non-aggressive, and have no contact damage.

  • You don't need to keep Hallownest Relics! (Wanderer's Journals, King's Idols, Hallownest Seals and Arcane Eggs)
Don't hesitate to sell them to Relic Seeker Lemm, they're not useful for anything else. His house/shop can be found in City of Tears, right next to the Hollow Knight statue. However, converting relics into Geo means that you have more money to be lost upon death, so they also work as a safe way of keeping Geo regardless of dying. It is best to hold on to them until they can be sold for the exact amount needed to buy something from a vendor or a nail upgrade. So... Do your maths!

  • Get 2500 extra Geo from Millibelle
You can find her bank at the base of Fog Canyon, opposite to the entrance of Queen's Station. By paying the fee of 100 Geo, she will provide a service to keep your currency safe (up to a maximum of 4500). However, she'll run away with your money after more than 2500 is deposited and the player has either rested on a bench or fast travelled via Stag Stations. She will then move to The Pleasure House, in City of Tears. You can go there and confront her, and attacking her with your nail will causes the stolen Geo to fall out of her (this won't damage her at all and can't kill her, so don't worry). Keep attacking (pogoing) to get everything back plus 2500 bonus geo. So, there's 2500 extra Geo for you. Warning: The Pleasure House can only be opened with a Simple Key, and this tip is not recommended if you're going for speedrun achievements.

  • Save as many Grubs as possible
The Grubfather, found in the north-west corner of Forgoten Crossroads, will reward the player for each grubb rescued. Some grubs you can find as long as you explore Hallownest, but there are ones that requires finding hidden spots, besides sometimes you will face a Grub Mimic, wich pretends to be a Grub trapped in a glass jair (you can check Dream Nailing it, if it says "Home..." it's a normal Grub, if it says "Kil..." or something, it's a Mimic). If you want to know exactly the location of all Grubs, then you have to get Love Key at Queen's Garden and then go to Tower of Love, sub-area of City of Tears, but accessible from Kingdom's Edge. There, you'll fight The Collector, and defeating it allows you to rescue 3 Grubs and acquire the Collector's Map, wich marks the location of un-rescued Grubs.
Early Game
At King's Pass, getting all Geo deposits you find can be very useful, especially for speedruns, because you'll be able to unlock the first toll machines without losing time killing enemies. There are two hidden deposits: the first one is right after the player enters Hallownest, at the very beginning of the game. As you fall down to King's Pass, go to the left and you'll find a secret area with a Geo deposit.

To get the second one, you have to stay at the very left edge of the floor, before it cracks down (after you see a Lifeblood Cocoon), as you can see in the image bellow:

At Forgotten Crossroads, after defeating False Knight, make sure to get this chest, it will give you 165 Geo. If you're going for speedrun achievements, getting this chest is highly recommended, if not mandatory. If you run away from the battle with him, by destryoing the breakable wall located at the left side of the arena, you'll not be able to get this chest, you'll get some time, but maybe you won't afford useful/mandatory charms for your run, like Gathering Swarm.
Mid game
Note: when we say you've reach mid game, we assume that you have Vengeful Spirit, Mothwing Cloak, Mantis Claw, Desolate Dive and maybe Great Slash (you don't really need this Nail Art).

This enemy's name is Shrumal Ogre, located at Fungal Wastes, and it drops a pretty decent amount of Geo, especially if you want to buy expensive Sly's charms and Lumafly Lantern. By following this tutorial below, you'll be able to farm about 1018 Geo every 10 minutes!

You'll need the following charms:
  • Gathering Swarm
  • Fragile Greed
  • Dashmaster
  • Nailmaster's Glory (it's not mandatory, it's just for interest of time, you can kill Shrumal Ogre pretty fast without Nail Arts)

End game

For the end game, when you should have the majority of charms, spells and abilities, you can do the Colosseum of Fools as many times as you need to get the Geo it rewards. PS: you'll only receive Geo if you beat a Trail twice (900 Geo - Trail of the Warrior, 1800 Geo - Trail of the Conqueror, 2700 Geo - Trail of the Fool), and the other prizes (Charm Notch, Pale Ore...) will not be given to you for subsequent victories.

i find that selling all of your relics for 1300 and then dying to the heavy sentrys arena after and then dying to your shade because youre absolutley trash is way more profitable :notepad: :notepad:

I farm geo by using fragile greed on the husk guards and re-spawning them on the stag bench (54 geo each time I kill one)

i prefer going to the failed tramway in deepnest and killing the carver hatchers and dirtcarvers, go to the bench and repeat. you get about 400 per trip.

Your numbers are off for the Colosseum; on my 2nd successful run through the Trial of the Warrior, I got precisely 1024 Geo, not 900.

I find that the fat knight above the Forggoten Crossroad's Stag Station y faster to get to, more geo, and if you do the couple monsters behind it (I use vengeful/shade soul to kill them), and those on the way (and back, even, if no Dream portal), you get almost a 100 a trip, each easily done in less than 1 min (Use super dash to get back).
