Hearthlings of Many Faces

With this mod you’re able to customize the looks and names of your citizens.
Here you can create an amazon village, make everyone be part of a huge family, create a village full of clones, name the shepherd after yourself, or whatever you feel like!

How it functions
Whenever you recieve a new citizen to your kingdom, a new window will show up; where you can edit the citizen’s name, gender, and models.

This is purely automatic at the moment, but for a future release there will be a way to manually start the customization process for any hearthling, via the use of an item.

Extra settings
There are some extra options found in user_settings.json:

- Customize embarking: enter customization for the citizens that are embarking.
- Customize immigrating: enter customization for the citizens that are immigrating.
- Zoom to entity: Zoom in on the hearthling being customized.
- Pause during customization: Pause the game while customizing.

All of these can be set to either true or false.

A new console command is available (open up the console by hitting Ctrl+C):

homf_custom - Whilst having a hearthling selected, this will start up the customization process once again for that hearthling.

For those that are looking to add localization for this mod:

The title and tooltip strings are located within the mod itself. However, the strings for the category types and for the names of the model / color are accessed through Stonehearth's en.json file, all of which is grabbed from

Furthermore, in general the keys for the strings are all in lower case and with the spaces (' ') replaced with underscores ('_'). E.g., "Male Hair 2" has the key value "male_hair_2", so its location within en.json is Take a look inside this file for an overview of the strings that are translatable. For most entries that were missing from Stonehearth's en.json file, they were added to this mod's own locales/en_fix.json. Keep in mind though that it doesn't include possible entries from other mods that add their own models and colors to the hearthlings.

Known issues
- There is a risk of your hearthlings getting baldspots, a workaround is to switch between the genders until the baldspots are gone. This is most likely a problem on the engine side, which can't be fixed from this mod unfortunately.

- The eyebrows for males are offset whenever the hearthling is generated as a female and subsequently changed to male (if the hearthling is generated as a male to begin with, this bug doesn't occur). This is a bug on the engine side, and nothing I can do. However, the developers have been notified of this but their priorities lies elsewhere than to fix what is causing this issue, so we need some patience before this is fixed.

Ah I see what you mean now. :)
That might be another effect from the bug that caused the window to not appear for the first hearthling, but that's speculation for now. Thanks for reporting it though! Gonna take a peek at it later on.

sorry i should have been more clear on the 1st one thing. IF a hearthling joins my town and i do not save, quit, and restart to trigger the window and then a 2nd hearthling joins if i repeat the process the window will pop for the 2nd one but not the first one i did not save, quit and restart for. But if i can use the command line its more then fine for me :)

@Mr. Frost: Yeah that's a bug alright, the window should popup as soon as you get a new hearthling. But what do you with "the first one no longer has the option to be changed?" Are you referring to the hearthlings that you start off with? If so then there's no need to customize them with this mod, as you can do so within the game at start (though I'm sure you're aware of this, but I don't know what else you mean...).

Yeah there's a bug that sometimes happen that shows the hearthling's scalp through their hair, and switching between genders is a workaround for this. And yes, there is a command to start customizing a hearthling: homf_custom . Just open up the console menu with Ctrl+C, make sure to have your hearthling selected, and type in the command.

not sure if its a bug or not but when any1 joins my town nothing happens, i have to save, leave and reload then i get the window to change also should i not do that right away and get another villager the first one no longer has the option to be changed. Lastly i see people here saying they are switching the genders back and fourth to fix a graphical glicth, is there a ingame tab / command to bring the edit window up?

@The Heretek: I talked about this in the thread over in the Discourse forum, but I won't be inlcuding any of that here. The reason being that I want to have this mod strictly be about customizing the look of the hearthlings, and not about their traits and stats. You'd have to look for a different mod for that kind of stuff. :)

now if only I could select custom traits

Thank you, this is exactly what I'm looking for. I was wanting to form a clan, unfortunately people immigrate as opposed to reproducing so that went out the window. Thank you for resolving this.

that would be nice since i was setting up a new settlement and my five hearthlings well i anted specific things like a fox for a pet i went 27 times on roles to get 1 fox but plenty of other things like 4 rabbits 2 racoons and 7 squirrels and a whole lot a nonsense would be an awesome for it to be a separate mod but no one has done that yet which is ashame as it would really help at this point of the game.

@Tridax: The headless bug sounds familiar, I think I've heard of it before. But I've never gotten it myself... The eyebrows bug is known but the issue lies in the engine, so it's not so easy to fix. There is an idea to work around it in the code, but it's super ugly so we'll see, I'm in contact with the devs on this one so we'll see if they can fix this before they stop supporting the game. :)

I've gotten the suggestion for changing the traits before, but I've decided not to change the traits as this mod is only focused on changing the hearthlings' appearances; not the stats and traits. A different mod could be made to extend this (or to be standalone) that allows one to change the stats and traits.
