Swincar

Description
Well, since my last design was such a hit! The Swincar is BACK! Orignally created by Pascal Rambaud, Jerome Arsac and Thierry James of the French company Mecanroc. It is not exactly the same as this is Scrap Mechanic. Most noteably, the ride height, wheelbase, and suspension. However, the principles stay true to the their design.

This creation was made from the ground up. A complete redesign of my previous attempt. There are some new features, so I will try to list them here.

This car features a pendulum chassis. This allows for the body to sway into turns and with gravity. Something to note here is the new mechanism I used to simulate the transfer of mechanical energy through cables and gears. The chassis is now positioned below the frame for the wheels and steering. This allows for much more free movement. It also now uses 2 sets of 2 reverse suspensions to keep a constant and even pull on the chassis.

The suspension from my last creation was scrapped in favor of an armature with a single 3 length piece on each arm. This coupled with 2 free barrings off-set from the pivot allow each arm a full range of motion.

Finally, I incorporated self-cambering wheels! An array of sensors on the under carriage, wired into several sets of logic gates, and controllers. This allows the front and rear sets of wheels to stay parallel with respect to each other and the body of the vehicle. Up to 30 degrees that is. Unfortunately, there is not a better way to replicate the Bowden cables in this situation. At least that I've found. Let me know if you have an idea to simulate this better.

Thanks!

Tips for operation:
1) Use semi-quick taps to turn. Some long, sustained donuts can cause the rear-end (or front, if in reverse) to flip over itself.

2) If the rear/front wheels are starting to flip, either go in reverse, in the same direction that you were headed forward. Or stop for a moment and let the counter-weights and stabilizing mechanism pull them back down.

3) HAVE FUN!

Wanted to drop this here so you have a visual as to what I'm getting accomplished https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2800432084

Hahaha I'm taking you up on that "no rush". I've gone through SOOOO many iterations, but I'm pretty sure it's about ready. I may revisit an older branch of design to see if I can get it to work well. But, that's down the road, for now this design is in testing and I'm excited to share it soon!

Awesome! I look forward to the full version. No rush on it, by the way.

Hi brixalot, I'm soooo sorry it's been a full year (almost to the day lmao). I have come though to report I've begun redesigning from scratch with vanilla parts! I have a working model already, however I'm trying to take your advice and only translate over what works in Scrap. So, it's not perfect and I'll need to either tweak some things to remove an unintended suspension glitch or remove the self balancing system I was testing. I'll try to have it up by the end of the week and link it here 🤌🏻

Thirdly, unless you do, I personally think it is not absolutely required to perfectly mirror the real vehicle. I believe it would be better to mirror only it’s good attributes, and find better solutions or ignore it’s problems.

I look forward to your next model.

You are welcome for the criticism. I have some recommendations and possible fixes for you.

First of all, I’d recommend you get a version you want first, and then transfer it into vanilla pieces, instead of just starting with vanilla parts.

Secondly is dealing with the suspension glitch. This is why I hate the suspension glitch so much. A creative way people have found to bypass this is using pistons instead of suspensions. Simply use a level 1 piston at low speed and it should work similarly to a suspension, but may require a slightly heavier body. The other problem is that they are only 1x1...

A more traditional fix is the X-Axis fix. See the below link to see what I mean https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1987146413&searchtext=No+glitch+swin+car
It allows the suspension to move freely but also still do it’s intended feature. However, this one takes up more space, practically opposite the first method.

First off, I want to thank you for the feedback. I haven't had many people critique in a constructive way. But, I can definitely give it a go with vanilla parts. It would be a little bit of a challenge, but I think that could be overcome by increasing the size of the vehicle. The suspension glitch is sadly not intentional and even unreleased versions of it still have it, regardless of attempts to resolve the glitch. But, I may start on it this weekend or early next week.

I know that a lot of the features that a irl Swincar has is not translatable to Scrap, but I will do my best to incorporate the key components.

Honestly, I think it would be cool if you tried to replicate or supersede this with vanilla parts. It would make it slightly more universal to all and may offer more of a challenge (if you like that sort of thing).

However, It's entirely up to you, so I won' force you on that. I am glad you will be returning to making another of these (possibly).

One of the main issues i have noticed with your vehicle is that the suspension stabilization glitch causes it to be, at least to me, not quite as fun. I don't know if it's possible for you to fix that, or if it was intended, but again, up to you.

I was however inspired by you to make a vanilla swincar of my own, so you can find that on my profile. It may not be exactly like the real vehicle, But it still can climb quite well.

I've also had thoughts about rebuilding your newest model in vanilla.

I'm glad you found the mod brixalot. Please bare in mind that I have not put any work into this creation for 2 years. I was going to start back on it with the survival update, but a lot of the mods weren't updated to be compatible. Sounds like that is no longer the case and I'll probably return to work on it soon.
