The terms "Battle Staff" is used to indicate the command structure of a unit (Battalion or larger).

It includes all the different functions that are need in war fighting:
  • troops
  • supplies
  • equipment
  • engineers
  • air support

https://youtu.be/qbX8OaxUEWM
These functions are labeled as 'Shops' and go from S1 to S6.

'Laison' staff serve a go-to for different units to better coordinate military activities/operations.

Based on the type of unit (Light, Heavy, Stryker or Special Forces), the 'Shops' are slightly different.

'Shop' Leaders
1) The 'Commander' is the Officer In Charge (OIC)

Reporting directly to him/her are the:
  • Command Sergeant Major (CSM) (senior non-commissioned Officer [NCO])
  • Chaplain/Legal etc

2) The 'XO' (Executive Officer) reports directly to the Commander.

The XO is the 2OIC (2nd in command) and is 1 rank below the Commander

3) The different 'Shops' report directly to the XO

4) The S-3 OIC:
  • is usually the same rank as the XO
or
  • the most senior OIC of the 'Shops'

5)Each 'Shop' has:
  • an OIC which is 1 rank below that of the XO
and
  • a senior NCO (SFC/MSG for U.S. Army)

6) The S-3 also has the most senior NCO for Operations
  • Sergeant Major (SM)

Modern military operations such as O.E.F and O.I.F have made great use of S-5.

'Shop' Layout
All Battle Staffs should have the same basic set-up

Important factors include:
  • force protection (security) measures
  • control the flow of traffic (where to place the shops)

Personnel manning considerations are very important as well.

These are usually controlled by the S3 NCOIC (Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge)

'Shop' Use for A3
So now that we have a better understanding of Battle Staff/Shop use, let's see how we can use it in-game...

In-game use:
Option A
Have dedicated Battle Staff positions filled in full or partially. They can be in-game or virtual.

Pro: Much better results for your Unit
Con: Requires many players; Players must be already trained

Option B
Have players that are already trained in the various Battle Staff/Shop positions play in-game and when a need for their speciality arises, they are the ones responsible to deal with the situation.

Pro: No 'real' command is needed; Less players are needed
Con - Difficult to play and conduct Battle Staff/Shop duties at the same time; Less realistic

To help organize a Unit:
If you belong to an A3 Unit chances are you already have Battle Staff/Shop positions. If not, now you know the basics to set one up both in the field and off the field (in-game and virtual).
Conclusion
Remember:

Most Battle Staff/Shops have S1 to S6.

Each 'S' Shop has it's own role to play in the fight.

ALL the leadership should maintain a Battle Staff/Shop position.

Using Battle Staff/Shops make in-game experience much more realistic.
However, it can complicate the game and use up many players.

ALL Unit members need to be included in some kind of 'Roster'.
At a minimum it should have:
  • Position and rank of each player
  • Superiors/subordinates
  • Game/training time(s)
  • Contact information

Haters get fucked. Even if you don't play in a full blown MILSIM unit, you could take the information here to construct more accurate enemy TOCs for your super special operation power trip fantasies. It's a good little guide. No information here can't be found on the web, but this is a simple, informative, tidy and fairly complete package. I'd like to see another one of these for brigade battle staff. Good work.
