How to be Rolling over in caps in Fallout 1
By La Ciel 🕊
Apperantly hoarding tons of bottlecaps is... pretty easy in the original Fallout. This guide will teach you the ways of the cap jedi so you too, can be a greedy wasteland capitalist.

Leading the simple life
There are a few ways of making caps in Fallout but the most efficent method i've found so far is getting off my lazy butt and getting a job.

More specifically, getting a job as a caravan guard. In order to do that you'll have to ask one of the Caravan leaders down at the hub, located here:

The jobs are relatively easy, you get payed both ways, and you usually run into raiders once sometimes twice there and back. I know what some of you are thinking but raiders are easy meat since you spawn in with 4 caravan guards to help you in the fight, and if one dies in battle he/she will still be there to help you fight the next round. On top of the reward you get for completing each run you can loot the bodies which'll net you on average a few hundred caps or so. (you can loot dead caravan guards without any penalties by the way)

Working for the water merchants will get you 200 caps per way, plus loot. I would work for them at first until you have enough caps to get some better gear from one of the merchants in the hub. Once that's done you can start working for the Crimson Caravan which pays 600 caps per way, not counting what you'll make off the loot. (Don't be afraid to buy the best armor and weapons you can find, it's a small investment compared to what you'll make) At this point you'll have enough money to send a water caravan up to your vault and add ~100 days to the time limit if you'd like.
Hero's Bounty/Villain's Plunder

One of the main premises of Fallout is running around the wasteland helping people (or hurting them) and becoming a hero (or villain). NPC's will often offer you rewards after you've completed their quests, usually not the greatest but it's something. The real money comes from looting the victims of your heroic escapades. At the start of the game this isn't really an easy way of making money since you'll have no armor and a medicore 10mm pistol to slay a band of enemies with better weapons and armor. Needless to say, you're gonna be outmatched in probably every fight. That's why I like to run for caravans awhile until I get *at least* decent gear. And a human shiel... I mean companion.

Alternatively... you could go around stealing from everyone and everything you find. You need at least decent sneak and steal skills, it's probably a good idea to put some points into lockpick too. Although in my expierence i've found very few locked containers so the majority of the time you're going to have to steal from NPC's. The best way to do this is to save your game, go into sneak mode ~5-10 grid spaces away from the person you're trying to steal from, walk up to them, (make sure always run is off!) click the red skillidex button, click steal, click on the NPC, and if you're caught stealing just reload a previous save. Boom. done. It's... really simple. Too simple, to the point where "It will eventually feel like cheating" according to some random guy on a Fallout forum I was reading.

Oh and one more thing, this might sound crazy but you're going to want to steal from guards since most (probably all actually) are going to have one or more weapons on 'em.

How to Loot Properly
You are going to find a ton of loot on your travels, and in order to maximize profits from that loot you're going to need to know how to be a hoarder, capitalist, and inventory organizer extrodinair.

General Tips:
-You can use your companion as a pack brahmin by using the steal skill against them, this will always work and there are no penalties for doing so

-When looting, don't pick things up like Nuka Cola, other food/beverage items, or radscorpion tails, they just waste space

-Guns, Guns, Guns, and ammo are the way to go

-Radx & Radaway are worth a ton, and you'll probably only ever use them if you go to the glow

-Don't sell your stimpacks, it's not worth it in the long run

-If a merchant doesn't have enough money to pay you, add on items to even out the bill and go sell them to a different merchant

-Even if your inventory is full, items that you buy from merchants will still be added to your inventory with no penalties

-Containers and companions have limited space, although it can take awhile to max it out

-If you're playing an evil character don't make enemies with the hub! You need their merchants to trade with

Thanks for reading!
This is the first guide i've published and I put a lot of work into it, so i'd like to say thank you for taking the time to look at it. If you have any suggestions for things I should add feel free to let me know in the comments!
