Other than that, don't bother with any weapon of types you're not skilled with except for some specific late game weapons like that one sword or indeed the GEP gun.
There is no real "guide" for that. The inventory limitation creates capacity scarcity - the more large weapons you carry, the less space you have for ammunition and other supplies, so it's a kind of "pick and choose" situation where you need to ask yourself: which weapon do you really WANT to use, what do you NEED to use?
Do you absolutely NEED that shotgun or that sniper rifle? Can you afford to carry both? Go with weapons that cover multiple roles or those that cover ONE role really well and you KNOW will be used frequently because of that. Toss niche weapons or those you don't have enough ammo for. Always leave room for supplies. Upgrade your inventory or use storage spaces when the game gives you the option. That is all.
