Relocating Home Planet in Starbound
By Corvo
You might have somehow lost access to the base you've built on your home planet, the first planet you spawned on. You may have relied on the bookmarking system and found that it didn't save the coordinates of your home world. This guide is meant to help any who may have lost his or her way back home.

Finding the Coordinates
Before I tell you how to find your home planet, I'd like to cordially advise you to create a flag you can teleport to, and place it somewhere in or around your base. Just be sure to name it and click accept when prompted. It's far more reliable than the bookmark system. And should you accidentally (or purposefully) place the flag back into your inventory, then later place it back on your base or wherever, BE SURE TO NAME IT AGAIN AND CLICK ACCEPT WHEN PROMPTED. Failing this is how I lost my home planet in the first place.

Go to your Steam Library --> Locate Starbound and right click it --> Select Properties --> Select the Local Files Tab --> Select Browse Local FIles --> Double click the "storage" folder --> Double click the "universe" folder

Here, you should see a list of files named as a bunch of numbers. Most files should look something like this:

245016420_-262716155_94398061_6_2.world

This is essentially documentation of each planet you visited and its coordinates. Order the files by date so you can easily locate the earliest one, which should be your home planet (the first one the game started you on). Once you've found the file dated the earliest, determine the coordinates. To use the example above, the X coordinate is the first number before the underscore --> 245016420. The Y coordinate is the number after the FIRST underscore --> -262716155. Please note whether the negative/minus sign, "-", is present in the name of your file in question, as this is important.

Write down the coordinates or ALT-TAB in and out of game to type the coordinates into your ship, which will take you to the solar system your planet is located in, NOT the planet itself. This method greatly narrows the search at best, but at this point, it's a relief, I'm sure. So you'll need to do some re-exploring until you find the planet with your base on it.

I hope this helps, space-wayfarers!

And, about all this lush starting thing, I feel like it's not entirely likely that you'll ever go to a lush planet again, or at least, I don't on my playthroughs.

If i may add. Your Starting planet is always on a lush planet. So if your looking for your actual starting planet, look at the lush planet(s) first.
Also the numbering system after the coordinates in the file name of planets could also be a help.
in your example, the numbers finish with 6_2. This mean that its a moon, or atleast that it orbits another planet. In your case it is the closest planet orbiting planet 6.
This does not mean that it is the 6th planet orbiting star x 245016420 y -262716155 it means its the planet in the 6th position, iirc there are 11 positions. So if position 1-5 are empty it would the closest planet to the star, though it would be about halfway between the star and the furthest possible orbit.

@Tari the whole universe is randomized so you just have to look around and get lucky or rename one...

I forgot to bookmark my space station on my ship's navigation and I was hoping to find the system through this method, but it looks like stations use a different name system and it doesn't appear to include the coordinates. I tried opening the file in a hex editor, but it doesn't decode into anything useful. I've also seen people suggest using debug for them, but that just displays the system coordinates of where your ship is.

I always take a screenshot of my favorite planets' coordinates, and then alt-tab to input them later once my new characters are in post game... So they all end up in the same base lol.

Still, this is great for anyone who isn't OCD about knowing exactly where their base is lol. Thanks for the guide.
