I have yet to test this with multiple different save directories from different games, so I'm not sure if this is a global save file limit, or just number of files per sub-directory under saves.
If you do ever update this, I hope the information helps.
It's interesting though that up until it stopped working, the save menu showed barely any lag at 603 saves. It does open slightly smoother now that I've gotten rid of most of the old saves, but there is almost no difference - so the arguments I've seen about the save limit being there to keep the menu loading quickly don't seem to be very convincing.
I made a backup of the entire save directory, then deleted my 594 oldest saves and it started working again. I guess I will keep having to do that from now on whenever I reach ~600 saves. Interestingly, the total directory size was only half a gig... now I'm wondering if it's the number of saves, or the directory size that caused this.
I'm betting on there being a hardcoded limit to how big a single savegame directory can get, though I guess a hidden counter for save file amount is possible too, but unlikely at such an arbitrary number as 604... unless autosaves are exempt, which could mean it is just set to allow saving as long as the number of saves with the new one included doesn't exceed 600.
One question though - why 2000 for the new limit? Is it hardcoded not to go any higher than that? Or can I edit the mod myself and increase that if I need to, like to 9999999 or max_int or something?
I ask because I have occasionally created more than 2000 save files on one playthrough in some games, so this may actually become a concern - and I ran up against the vanilla save limit before 10 in-game years. Given how the game complexity will likely increase as time passes, I will probably be saving even more often later in the game.
