Fallout 1 Companion Info
Unlike Fallout 2, in Fallout 1 you can have as much companions you like, regardless of your charisma or Karma.

In the first Fallout there are four permanent companions. Ian, Tycho, Katja and the beloved Dogmeat.

Ian

Ian is most likely to be the first companion you will find within the Wasteland.

He can be found inside a house in the northeast of Shady Sands.

There are two ways to make Ian join your Party

1.Paying him 100 caps

2.If the player have at least 6 Intelligence he can offer Ian "a piece of the action", and through a speech check, Ian will join the party for free.

Tycho

Tycho can be found in the Skum Pitt (Junktown).

In order to Recruit Tycho, Killian must be alive and the player just have to talk with him and he will join the party.
Dogmeat

Good old Dogmeat can be found in Junktown next to Phil.

Just like Ian, there are two ways to get Dogmeat in your party.

1.Wearing a leather jacket.

2.Giving him a Iguana-on-a-stick (Which can be bought from merchants or found within
the wasteland)
Katja

Katja can be found in the Boneyard inside the Boneyard Library (Adytum).

To recruit Katja the player just have to talk with her and ask her to join the party.

She also marks The Cathedral on the players map and can be used to lockpick locked doors.

Ah, I remember finding them all for the first time so many years ago. Good times. Katja has some of the funniest floating text for any situation. Would love to see a quality of life update for them.

I think that Ian was, hands down, my best and toughest companion. I'm going to have to go back and replay an earlier save because I got Ian and Tycho killed in a raider fight and dogmeat died trying to cross the moat around the Gun Runners :steamsalty::steamsalty: I thought I'd just be able to hit the tilde button and pull up some kind of console command (like I've done in every other PC game) but once they are dead, that's it!

So! Treat your companions like the indispensable units they are! If they get killed, that's it! I'm now searching the Boneyard for Katja because she's the only backup I got left! :steamfacepalm:

I accidentally killed Tycho because I killed of the Skullz and the whole town attacked me because I literally helped them from a gang

Well didn't know about Tyco and Katja. I think it's time to play again! I usually leave Ian before I kill some stuff and then come back and get him after if I want him to live.

Playing through this classic for the first time. Your mini-guide here is a great, quick reference. Thanks for making it!

Thank you very much. Yeah, like i said, i always try to be the good guy and since for example in Fallout 3 i didn't know what happened if you bought Carrions contract, i ended up getting all of Underworld slaughtered and reloaded my save file

There isn't karma requirements for companions in Fallout 1 (At least as far i know). Companions can be useful especially in the early game, but in the late game they may attack enemies even when you don't want to, and may block you sometimes. Beyond that, i do recommend having them in your party.

So, how useful ARE Companions? Also, i'm a strict Good Karma only player, so i'd want to know if any of these require bad karma and the like or to overall be an asshole

Yes you can
