TF2 on Linux Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - Get the Tux Penguin
By [EGT] Moss
This is a videoguide about installing Ubuntu 12.04, Steam and Team Fortress 2.
Not only TF2 and Linux is free, by following this guide you can receive the cute Tux Pengiun in TF2.
Valve gives away the Tux Pengiun for playing TF2 on Linux before the 01.March 2013.

The video is 17 minutes long and shows the following steps:

Content:
  • Ubuntu 12.04 download and installation from a USB stick on a "naked" PC.
  • Installing "Steam for Linux"
  • Installing Team Fortress 2 on Linux.
  • Notes about the needed graphicscard drivers.
  • Helpfull tools in Linux.
  • How to access the Linux shell and htop.

I decided to create this guide as Valve published "Steam on Linux" officaly at the 14.02.2013.
When publishing this guide, my video is already 2 weeks old, but still up to date on the topic.

Play the free TF2 on a free OS and get the Tux (for free)!

If you're running Ubuntu version 13.10, this will not work, well tf2 will actually run, but you wont be able to configure your graphics in ubuntu, it will suck. Version 12.04 is much more stable and has better hardware support, trust me, you cant even switch your proprietary drivers in 13.10.

I installed Virtual Box and partitioned 50 gigs. I downloaded Ubuntu Linus 64 bit. I placed the ISO file in Virtual Box. When I opened the file I get the Ubuntu I get the start screen and then an error message with 4 options. One option asks me if I wish to run in low-res video mode which only takes me to a black dos screen. None of the options will allow me to continue with the start up of Ubuntu Linux. I deleted the 64 bit version and downloaded the 32 bit version and got the same error. I have a very fast computer with a 1 gig, GTX 450 video card and 8 gigs memory. I have since deleted everything and am looking for a way to install again correctly. My goal is to be able not only to get the tux on several accounts, but also to be able to move items between several of my accounts with the same computer. Any help would be appreciated. Please leave a response on my profile page. Thank yoiu. God bless. Bird

@rxg | lenatios: This guide is about setting up Ubuntu on a PC with an empty harddrive. There´s plenty other guides for installing Linux beside Windows on a configured PC. Google them. I personally don´t like dual-boots and had the chance to build a second PC, so i did it :)
