Fallout 3 Crash FIX (Step-by-Step)

Just follow this guide to fix the crashes!

OK I HAVE BEEN GETTING LOTS OF COMMENT SAYING THAT IT'S NOT WORKING WELL(!) IF YOU HAVE AN INTEL GRAPHIC STILL DO FOLLOW MY STEPS BUT AT THE END IT WILL BE A YOUTUBE VIDEO AND A WEBSITE FORUM SAYING ON "HOW TO PLAY FALLOUT WITH INTEL GRAPHICS" GOOD LUCK XD (the video or forum its not made by me) (ONLY USE THE VIDEO AND THE FORUM IF YOU ARE USING INTEL GRAPHICS)

(IF YOU DONE ALL OF THIS BUT STILL DON'T WORK GO TO YOUR OPTIONS AND SELECT WINDOWED MODE NOT FULL SCREEN)

BEFORE DOING THIS I STRONGLY RECOMEND TO BACK-UP!

I have the game of the year edition but ii doesn't matter you can use this fix even if you dont have the year edition.

Step 1: Download this file (its a DLL file don't worry it might say its a virus but its not!!) and place this into the Fallout 3 directory.

Step 2: Then find a file called "Fallout_default" and open it (The file should be in the fallout 3 directory e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 3 goty)(REALLY INPORTANT!!! MAKE SURE THAT THE FILE ITS NOT "READ-ONLY" OTHERWISE YOU CANNOT SAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT ITS NOT READ-ONLY RIGHT CLICK ON THE "Fallout_default" AND IT SHOULD BE A BOX THAT SAYS READ-ONLY MAKE SURE ITS UNTICKED!! NOT TICKET).

Step 3: Find these texts (to make things easier press CTRL+F and copy and paste the text until the equal sign not the number)

bUseThreadedAI=1 (you will have it on 0, change it to 1)
iNumHWThreads=2 (you need to add this)

Once you done this SAVE!



Step 4: Go to Documents and find "My Games" folder open it and you should see fallout 3 open it and find a file called Fallout 3, find a text file called "FALLOUT" and repeat Step 3.

Once you done this SAVE



Step 5: OK you are pretty much done but if you still have problems here a solution, when you open the game and you are in the main menu open the task maneger ( CTRL+SHIFT+ESC) the go to Processes and press "Show processes from all users" you have to press that otherwise it won't work, then find "fallout 3.exe" and then right-click, click on "Set Affinity...", then a windows should come up and click on CPU 1; you can try clicking on CPU 1 and 2. (What this does it will you will set the game to only use 1 core only unless you have set it to use 2 cores). I will put up a screen-shot i know i am not doing it on "fallout3.exe" but i am only showing a example!.

YOU COULD ALSO TRY SETTING THE GAME ON COMPABILITY MODE TO WINDOWS XP SP3
YOU WILL HAVE OCCASIONALLY HAVE A FEW CRASHES OR IF YOU ARE LUCKY NONE!!

no, i can only start up the launcher, i probably just need to redownload it. Thanks for the help though.

hmm that's weird, have you tried maybe starting a new game (if possible) then check if it appears or Verify integrity of game cache on steam

From step 4 all i have in my fallout3 folder is falloutPrefs. please help

ah thanks but ive tried everything and nothing works but it used to but nothings changed , cheers anyway mate

This is where you have to try out what works best for you really! But for my 2 CPU boxes seems to work.

if i have 4 cores how many cpu boxes do i tick?

Try deleting all the previous games if you have any.
