Story of Left 4 Dead
There are two ways to enjoy the plot and story of Left 4 Dead!
1. You can read this page!
2. Or you can read the Left 4 Dead Comics over at http://www.l4d.com/comic/

Pennsylvania suffers an outbreak of "Green Flu"; a highly contagious virus causing extreme aggression, mutation to the body cells, and loss of higher brain functions. Two weeks after the infection four immune survivors—Bill, a Vietnam veteran; Zoey, a college student; Louis, an IT analyst, and Francis, an outlaw biker—make their way through the city of Fairfield, only to discover that the virus is creating more dangerous mutations. After narrowly avoiding these new infected, along with hordes of others, the survivors are alerted to the presence of an evacuation point at the nearby Mercy Hospital roof by a passing helicopter(No Mercy Campaign). Fighting their way through the city's streets, subway and sewers, they are rescued from the hospital's roof by the pilot, only to discover he is infected.
With Zoey forced to kill him, the helicopter crash lands in an industrial district outside the city. Finding an armored delivery truck, the group uses it to make their way to the town of Riverside(Crash Course Campaign).

However, they find the road blocked, and travel the rest of the way on foot. After an encounter with an infected lunatic in the local church, they discover that the town is overrun, and decide to head to a nearby boathouse for rescue(Death Toll Campaign).
Contacting a small fishing vessel, they manage to reach the city of Newburg on the other side of the river, only to find much of it in flames. Seeking cover in a large greenhouse, their rest is interrupted when a military C-130 Hercules passes overhead, leading the survivors to travel through the city's business district towards Metro International Airport. Upon arrival, the group see that in an attempt to contain the infection, the military had bombed the airport while infected pilots crash planes in an attempt to land; the runway however is largely intact, allowing the survivors to fuel up and escape in a waiting C-130(Dead Air Campaign).

Despite this apparent rescue, it crashes as well, and the survivors once again find themselves alone on the outskirts of Allegheny National Forest. Following a series of train tracks through the area, the group find themselves at a functioning, but abandoned, military outpost. After answering a radio transmission, the survivors make their final stand against hordes of infected, before a military APC arrives to transport them to Northeast Safe Zone Echo, supposedly the only uninfected area yet to be overrun(Blood Harvest Campaign).

Instead, they are kept at a military installation and informed that even though they are immune, they still carry the virus. They are temporarily held by the military before the base is overrun with infected. The four escape via train and travel south at Bill's insistence; Bill believes that they can find long-term safety from the infected on the islands of the Florida Keys.

At the portside town of Rayford, they find a boat but must raise an old rusty bridge powered by an aging generator to get the boat into open waters, assured that the machinery noise will alert a large horde. Bill sacrifices himself in order to restart a generator when the lift jams, so that the others may reach safety(The Sacrifice Campaign). The End...?
Weapons and Health
Weapons is one of the most important things for a survivor and the other is health! But remember Weapons run out of ammo to...

Side Arms

Pistols, the weapon with unlimited ammo and your starter weapon. This weapon can either save you or kill you. Only use the pistol when you need to. When you go down you can only use your pistols and having dual pistols increase your chance of survival when laying on the floor helpless so it be best to find another pistol and dual weld it! Pistols are the only weapon in Left 4 Dead that are akimbo and have unlimited amount of ammo.

Akimbo

1st Tier Weapons

Submachine Gun/Uzi, Has a great range and can mow down multiple zombies with a single clip. But isn't really affective against the witch like shotguns are. Full burst, 50 bullets to a clip.

Pump-Action Shotgun, Can shoot pretty far for a shotgun and deals more damage to zombies at close range then a Uzi can. Perfect weapon to use to "Crown" a witch with one shot. 8 Shots.

2nd Tier Weapons

Hunting Rifle, Great for popping heads from a distance or to see what lays a head of you. Remember this Weapon is ment for long rang only. Semi-Auto fire, 10 bullets to a clip.

Auto Shotgun, Great weapon to use in close quarter combat. 10 shots.

Assault Rifle/M16, Great weapon for short to medium range. Drops a crowd of zombies ahead of you like it's hot! Full burst, 50 Bullets to a clip.

Grenades
These can get you out of a sticky situation fast! It's all ways best to keep one of these two on you!

Molotov, on cold nights it's best to keep warm with a fire. This will instantly kill any normal infected and will constantly burn special infected till they are a nice crisp black. Doesn't work in water, any special infected on fire can be put out with water. This does not include sewage water... Smokers or Hunters, whom on are fire, do more damage to you if they pin you down. Very useful against tanks!

Pipebombs, hypnotising beeps lure zombies right to it for a big surprise... Extremely useful to distracts zombies away from you and disintegrate them. Useful during Crescendo Events to recover and if timed right can stun a tank! Note that only normal infected are lured by pipebombs because special infected aren't THAT stupid.

Health
"First to aid, last to die."
―Bill
Keeps you away from your demise longer... There are two types of health First Aid Kits and Pills! Note that pills temporarily give you health while First Aid Kits actually give you permanent health. Temporary health look like bars while permanent health is a bar. Permanent health will stay till you slowly get injured. Temporary health will go away over time injured or not till it reaches +1 Health or Permenate health. Once you lose all your health you wll go down! You have till your health goes all the way down to be revived or you will die and you cant move! You also can go down 3 times, the next time you go down you will die unless you use a First Aid Kit to reset your down counter.

First Aid Kit, They will only heal you 80% of your health at first. If your health is past 80% and you would want to heal till your 100% will cost you a good amount of First Aid Kits. Tip - Only use First Aid Kits when needed, they are like a last resort. Do not use First Aid if you have Pills on you take the pills instead UNLESS your screen is black and white then use the First Aid Kit! If you find an extra First Aid Kit meaning everyone has one then the person with the lowest health should heal and take the now not extra First Aid Kit. By the way the common locations of First Aid Kits are in Safe Rooms or near Crescendo Events.

Pills, We have no time to stop and use a First Aid Kit! Here use these! Pain Killers are more common to find them a First Aid Kit but are just as useful.
No Mercy 1-2
If you haven't read the "Story of Left 4 dead" or "Weapons and Health" your going to be missing out a lot!

There are a total of 5 levels on this campaign! I'm going to list them and tell you how to get through this ordeal you have gotten yourself into.

First level! - Apartments
You start out on the rooftops of an apartment building after running away from a horde and a tank(This scene is played at the beginning of left 4 dead when loaded, worth watching). You get to pick out 1 out of 2 primary weapons, A pump action shotgun or a uzi, and a health kit which is located randomly out through the level or in the "Safe Room."

Once you got what you want open the door or jump down the window behind where you spawned..

Go down stairs.

Once down stairs you will find 3 ways to take, one way is to continue down stairs, second way is to check the bathroom, or past the bathroom down a hallway which leads a bedroom.

It's pretty straight foward the rest of the way. You will fall down a hole in the floor and see a wall or a wall with a hole in it. This depends if the infected have made a hole in the wall.

After leaving the apartments down the ally you might find a witch...or be lucky and not.

Once you make a right from the police car you will see a crashed tanker. Past the tanker is the subway which you will need go down to where the safe room is to continue to the next mission.

Second Level - The Subway
Right out the door is a hole in the floor you need to go down in. Once down you can take either path, The stairs or cracked open vent. It doesn't matter which one you take since they both lead you to the same path in the end.

Once you are down stairs there is a white bench/table, they have the possibility of spawning 2nd tier primary weapons, a pistol, ammo,or nothing at all.
When you go up the stairs into the subway tunnels, where the subways are located in, you will follow a path down to another open subway train. As I said before Left 4 Dead is pretty straight forward.

Once on the other side you will notice two paths one on the right leads to nothing and the one on the left leads you the rest of the way. As you can see that white table is back again but with no weapons but individual results may vary.

Taking the path to the left to continue leads you up to a supported underground part of the Crescendo Event above.

Crescendo Event for opening a closed door.

Once the door opens there are stairs that lead you up into a security room on the second floor of a 2 story building. When you leave the building there is a pawn shop which contains the next safe room to continue on to Mercy Hospital.

Third Level - The Sewers
Leaving the safe room you are given to choices. If you want to look for items you would go right first, but if you went left you would come up to the back door of burger tank quicker then going right.

Once outside Burger Tank you can see a gas station.

Head towards the gas station it contains a lift up on the roofs to continue on and the life is another Crescendo Event.

WARNING SHOOTING THE GAS STATION WILL CAUSE IT TO EXPLODE.

Once the lift is all the way up you will now be on the roof. Now head towards the windows and becareful.

There is a hole in the floor which you have to go down in. There is no quick way back up to save someone still up top unless you take the lift again!

Bill is in a pickle...

It is best to loot the building for supplies since the rooms can contain usefull items or health. There is also a button down stairs to open a door so you wouldn't need to jump out the window to get out or use the lift to get back in!

Inside the warehouse there is only one other door to take, soooo take it.

Continue to Part 2
No Mercy 2-2
Due to the large amount of information to each campaign, every last page to that campaign will contain a walkthrough video, No Commentary maybe, if a video helps you better.

Third Level - The Sewers Part 2
The rest is pretty straight forward after going through the door. Once you reach down stairs there are two man holes you can take down into the sewers. Right or Left.

Once down the sewers you will keep going till you find this door which leads you to No Mercy.

This area has 2nd tier leveled weapons(Individual results may vary). A Semi-Auto Shotgun, A Hunting Rifle, and A Assault Rifle.

Going through another tunnel you will then see a red ladder leading out of the sewers. It goes out infront of Mercy Hospital. Head towards the Hospital it has the safe room to continue on!

Usually safe rooms near the end of the campaign or the last level contain 2nd tier weapons.

Fourth Level - The Hospital
Take a right out of the safe room to go upstairs. Going left only takes you to a dead end.

Once upstairs your need to keeping going up!

Another flight of stairs await for you! This time they lead you to a section of the hospital where there is a elevator to take instead of stairs. Crescendo Event awaits too!

In the elevator you have a moment to catch your breath before nearing the next safe room. When you reach your next stop BE VERY CAREFULL you might slip and fall off the building...

Fifth Level End - The Rooftops
When your ready leave the safe room to fight your last fight on No Mercy!

There is a defendable room on the rooftop. In the room contains a radio to contact a rescue chopper to come rescue you. After making radioing him you will need to defend against 2 waves of infected and 2 tanks! Biggest and last Crescendo Event! Survive this and you win this campaign!

THE END...?
Crash Course
Crash Course!
As the caption implies crashing will be the easiest thing you are going to be doing in this mini campaign!. First DLC for Left 4 Dead!

The Recap - You just escaped Mercy Hospital thanks to a pilot of a news chopper. Little did you know he is actually an infected who turns while flying the helicopter. Zoey then has to shot the now Zombified pilots brains out and I think we both know what happens next. The pilot had run into trouble and he tells you this in the radio transmission on the Roof Tops but valve had thought it be best to cut out that part with static but you can tell.

Objective - After the helicopter crashed your new objective is to find the mother of all vans that can get you out of here! Going through industrialized part of the city of Fairfield in Whitney County, you must fight your way through two whole levels!

First Level The Alleys - You start off from the helicopter crash site and try to head your way over to the bridge.

Second Level The Truck Depot Finale - This is where the campaign ends. Even though the campaign ends here your fight is not over yet!

In the future I plan to finish this out by the end of this year. Also like Terror Strike said about the chopper pilot being infected by the survivors is true. Every person the survivors met also infected that person. The survivors are immune but also carry the infection with them.

This is a great guide, but some of the story has issues such as the chopper pilot, He Was infected by the survivors.

Nice guide, though I must say that the "Very useful against tanks!" comment for the Molotovs is slightly incorrect. A Tank on fire won't actually take any extra damage, only die a certain period after being Molotov'd. They also run faster than a survivor after being set alight (whereas they run slightly slower before), and also hit harder (I think).

Good for beginners that don't know where to go, i found the weapons and health section to be the most useful
