Before subscribing or asking any questions please read the mod's description! - Don't forget to rate and favourite if you like the mod ;)

This is a re-skin of all land, naval, officer & standard bearers for both Roman and both Gothic factions (it also includes the faction leaders). Also the Romans have been overhauled (their names, stats and abilities) and the Goths slightly tweaked.

I still have to make custom unit cards for every unit. I'll get to it eventualy!
If there are any bugs or problems I'll try my best to fix them!

I advise you to read everything! This is not a major overhaul but there are some changes worth explaining in detail.

======= 1 =======

I wanted to make a mod that would portray the Romans in a more accurate way than the vanilla game.
I did the best I could with the info I could find and by taking inspiration from other mods like IB2 Vandalorum (for medieval 2), FOTE and Judex Rex. I'm not a historian so don't expect this to be 100% historical.

The Romans are far too weak in this game, I know that the WRE eventually fell, but crappy soldiers weren't the cause!
Rome was still the best military power at the time.
Being outstretched, outnumbered and surrounded by hostile peoples, poor administration, corruption and the Huns sparking the migration era were the biggest causes of the fall of the WRE.

I'm aware of auxiliary troops, like the foederati, and that the peoples from neighboring lands joined the roman ranks often (this is not exclusive to the late roman period). In my mod you will see units comprised mostly of Romans and others containing a mix of Romans and other ethnicities.

I wanted to name every roman unit according to their Notitia Dignitatum counterparts and also assign them with the correct shield patterns. And also wanted to add new units based on the Notitia. But a bunch mods like FOTE and Judex Rex already do this very well.
I changed my approach to one more similar to IB2 Vandalorum mod (for Medieval2) by renaming the units in a more generic way but still correct according to the Notitia :

- http://lukeuedasarson.com/NotitiaPatterns.html

An example of this in my mod - If you see a unit named auxilia palatina it will have a shield pattern of an actual auxilia palatina unit, like the celtae seniores for example. A comitatenses unit in my mod may be generically named too, but it will follow the same rule. All units will be named this way except some generic ones like the funditores or sagitarii.
I had to take some liberties renaming the naval units (since it's harder to find info on them).

Other important features have been added:

- All roman legionnaire infantry have missiles now - plumbata for sword infantry and heavy pilum for spear units;

- All roman legionnaire infantry have defensive and attacking testudo, shield wall and square formation;

- All roman infantry and cavalry skirmisher units have the light pilum (including exploratores and praeventores);

- The animation for the plumbata is now the same as the throwing axe (check the pictures) - this makes it so the plumbata is thrown by holding the end of the shaft and not like a javelin - no stat changes - cosmetic only;

- Some units can be recruited in most places so that you always have a decent option of recruitment in any town or settlement;

- All units stats have been improved according to their role (I do believe it's balanced) palatina and auxilia palatina units are the elite, comitatenses are quite top notch too, pseudocomitatenses and limitanei can also hold their own if you know how to use them. Cavalry follows the same rule. Skirmishers, archers and other units were improved but they are still meant to avoid melee and stick to skirmishing;

- To avoid creating new units (sorry for the laziness) I have brought some roman units over from the last roman to the grand campaign roman rosters (they work in custom battles and campaign). I have renamed and re purposed those units to fit my mod;

- I have also re purposed and renamed a bunch of units I believe to be inaccurate for this time frame or misplaced in the rosters - like the hetaireia guards (now the palatina matiarii skirmisher unit), the excubitores cavalry guard (now the bucelarii cavalry), the matiarii from WRE (now a pseudocomitatenses skirmisher unit) and the menaulautoi (now the pedites bucelarii sword legio style infantry);

- The goths received some minor stat adjustments, and all units were re-skinned.

======= 2 =======

Use this mod only for Grand Campaign and custom battles!

All the tables I've altered have also been renamed them with a prefix so that they won't overwrite many things in the vanilla game and in other mods (but instead try run alongside them).

I use plenty of mods and was able to play a trouble-free full WRE campaign with this mod active alongside my other mods. I believe It should work fine with a lot of other mods. However mods that alter the same things as this one may still overwrite it or be overwritten by it (depending on your load order). There's not much I can do there, you have to be aware of the mods you use so as to minimize conflicts between them!

I highly recommend you to subscribe to these mods to get the best results possible out of my mod :

I've been working in this mod for quite some time now, and during that time many fellow modders were kind enough to lend me their models and textures and offer help.
Many thanks to these modders and also to my friends in steam for the help and inspiration!

Just started a new campaign to check again, and yeah same issue, can only recruit it in Constantinople.

Yeah I've got that DLC

@Lmao Zedong

No problem!
Hmm.. maybe I enabled them only in larger towns and cities. Do you have the last roman dlc?
Lmao Zedong 7 May 2021 @ 18:58
Thanks for the reply, just got a bit further in my campaign and conquered Constantinople as the WRE. For some reason this seems to be the only place from which I can recruit the Equites Taifali.

@Everyone

Hello! Sorry to bother you, just a friendly reminder/tip:

Ok, so I just updated a list of required items - DLC and mods - that you should really subscribe to if you want to enjoy this mod at it's fullest potential.
I should have done this from the beginning, sorry for that, my bad!

There's more recommendations in the description, they won't make much difference to the features of this mod but (like any mod) they bring their own changes and are also worth it.

Please consider that each person has their own mod list and load orders and I can't guarantee absolute compatibility if you use more mods besides the recommended ones alongside this mod. So please bear that in mind and always read the descriptions of every mod you subscribe to.

Reskin only mods all work fine with this, but if some of those mods cover the same units as this then it's a matter of adjusting the load order to get the skins you want to overwrite the others.

Thank you for your time!

@Lmao Zedong

Heck, now that I think about it I might have even done the same for some vanilla units...
In fact, one of the mods I recommend to be used alongside mine (the links are in the description), is a mod that gets rid of the upgrade system (sort of).
And also, due to laziness and practical reasons, the new units in this mod are just units from the last Roman DLC brought over to the vanilla campaign - so you'll need that DLC. Avoid playing the Last Roman campaign with this mod active, in fact while using this mod just stick to the grand campaign (the DLC's made for the grand campaign work fine too).

@Lmao Zedong

Tbh my friend I can't recall for sure cause I've made the mod about 3 and a half years ago :steammocking:

But, since I hate the units unlocking by tech system and the upgrade system too, I think I made all these new units recruitable from the beginning on certain buildings (no matter the level of those buildings).
I just can't recall for sure where I put the equites taifali or if I accidentally missed them. I'll check the DB of my mod soon and I'll let you know where to find them, or if I skipped them I'll correct that.

Cheers, and have a nice weekend! :steamhappy:
