Rockstar Editor Settings

Allocated Storage
  • Maximum of 50 gigabytes of editor clips.
  • Maximum of 800 total clips stored in Rockstar Editor.
  • Maximum clip size tops out at about 100 mb for less than 2 minutes of footage.
  • Clip megabyte size is heavily influenced by the number of moving entities it has to track, not by distance traveled in-game while recording.
  • These limitations do not apply to the final rendered .mp4 videos.
Auto-Save Action Replay On Death
  • ON automatically saves clips of the last few moments before dying while using Action Replay.
  • OFF effectively erases the buffered footage when dying since Rockstar Editor won't record during load screens or loss of player control. The Action Replay buffer starts fresh after player respawn.
  • Player death abruptly stops all recording. Most clips end at the moment before dying. Pausing the game will also halt recording.
YouTube Upload Status
  • PUBLIC PRIVATE UNLISTED
  • Uploading to YouTube through the Rockstar Editor will also link that video to your Rockstar Social Club profile.
  • Exported .mp4 videos are saved to:
    C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA V\videos\rendered
  • Rockstar Editor, Director Mode and Single Player GTA V are available to play while uploading to YouTube. Some cutscenes will pause upload yet automatically resume when gameplay control is regained.
Rockstar Editor Tooltips
  • ON displays keybinds on the bottom right of the screen while using Rockstar Editor.
  • Can also be hidden and shown while editing through the hide ui keybind "H".
Upgrade Graphics Settings For Video Export
  • ON raises most of the graphics settings while rendering a video so that the export looks better than what your pc may be able to handle.
  • Raises the graphics settings you can flip on the fly like ambient occlusion, shader quality and post-processing effects.
  • Does not raise texture or grass quality settings because changing them requires GTA V to restart.
  • Even if your pc is outdated and can only export the project video at a choppy 1 frame per second, the final rendered video should play at your chosen output of 30 (29.97) or 60 (59.94) fps.
  • Keep this setting turned on.
Recording

F1 starts recording clips in-game. F2 activates Action Replay, F3 stops Action Replay recording.
  • Hold down L Alt or Down on controller dpad to record from the character select screen.
  • You can record scenes in Story Mode, GTA Online, and Director Mode when you have full control of your character.
  • Scenarios like pre-race countdown aren't recordable until the race starts and the player character is fully controllable.

Rockstar Editor only records gameplay clips when you are controlling a character.
  • You can't record during loading screens, cutscenes, or certain scripted mission events.
  • In most cases where model swap or scripted npc spawning occurs, those clips become fixed gameplay perspective demos where camera editing is blocked.
  • When camera editing is blocked, what your perspective was while playing will be the camera view while editing.
  • Sex scenes in certain missions, lap dances, and vehicle prostitution disable Rockstar Editor recording entirely.
  • You can mitigate these disruptions by saving clips immediately before and after these events.

First person gameplay is fixed perspective and camera uneditable
  • First-person recording limits clip editing to only color filters, depth of field, and audio.
  • Scrolling through first person view while cycling camera modes will "corrupt" an entire clip into forced gameplay perspective, locking out the ability to change camera angles in the editor.
  • Some events, like when first getting into a cab and telling the driver where to go, will occur in first person mode and corrupt camera editing ability for a currently recording clip.

Recording the game while playing in third person allows free camera editing.
  • Free camera editing allows for moving with, focusing on, and rotating camera angles with the player or any other entities that are in range like other players, npcs, and animals.
  • Third person clips can also record the cinematic in-game camera when driving or idle, which can be randomly useful as it has a longer view range than free camera's maximum distance away from the player in editing mode.

Free Camera Range
  • Be mindful of your maximum camera distance from the player when setting up scenes to record.
  • The player character is always the center point when recording.
  • You can focus on and move with any non-player characters and animals that are within the sphere of influence around the player.

Television shows
  • Can be recorded and captured within the Rockstar Editor.
  • Rockstar Editor will not record radio music whether that's car radio, house radio, or random event npcs dancing to boomboxes.
Rockstar Editor

Create New Project & Load Project
  • A collection of clips saved with project-specific camera edits, text, licensed radio music, score tracks, and ambient sound effects.
  • Clip edits are specific to projects while the original recorded clips stay untouched, meaning project clips don't retain their edits when imported into new projects.

Clip Management
  • View, sort, and delete your collection of clips.
  • Maximum of 800 clips or 50 GB of clips, whichever comes first.
  • Clips marked with the chain icon are linked to one or more projects.
  • Camera locked clips are individually marked with warning symbols in the clip details.

Video Gallery
  • View rendered movie projects or upload to YouTube.
  • The Video Gallery player tends to desync audio and video while viewing, yet the exported .mp4 video plays properly on an external video player or YouTube.
  • YouTube upload won't allow commas in the title, text description, or tags.
  • GTA V Single Player and Rockstar Editor are playable while uploading to YouTube.

Project

Add Clip
  • Add clips to the timeline and save a new project name.
  • Clip edits are project specific.
  • Clips can be used in multiple projects.

Add Ambient Track - Add Radio Track - Add Score Track
  • Various sound effects, licensed music, and Rockstar's dynamic mission music.
  • Not all GTA V licensed radio music is available for use in projects
  • Audio copyright may still be claimed by the radio music producer if uploaded to YouTube.
  • Score tracks are Rockstar-created music tracks originally designed to dynamically change intensity in GTA missions by adding instruments.
  • Set score intensity for each edit in a clip from Minimal to Maximum, to quickly add a musical punch or slowly create a quiet audial mood for scenes.
  • Score, radio, and ambient are seperate audio tracks and can be used simultaneously.
  • Tracks can't repeat or overlap, but there's no limit for the amount of tracks used.

Add Text
  • Add text and choose font, size, color, and opacity.
  • Text can be stretched across clips to last the whole video, but text tracks also can't overlap each other.
  • Audio and text tracks can be snapped to each other, snap to clip start, snap to anchor, or granularly placed manually on the timeline.

Cameras

Free Camera
Freely edit camera position and gain the ability to focus on and move with other entities in range.
  • Look at Target - None, Player, (1,2,3)
Camera lens tracks the target. 1 is the closest npc, 2 is the next closest, et cetera.

  • Move with Target - None, Player, (1,2,3)
    Camera position moves with target.
    • Mount Type Camera movement behavior when locked on to targets
      • Flexible - Camera moves freely along with target, ignoring target rotation.
      • Rigid - Camera moves while rigidly fixed to target's rotation.
      • Default - Camera moves freely on left/right axis but is rigidly stuck to player on up/down axis, like when normally playing the game.

  • Blend Mode - None, Linear, Smooth
    • Linear blend moves the camera directly between edit points on the project timeline.
    • Smooth gradually interpolates a path to curve the camera between edit points.
      • Blend Easing
        • ON changes blend speed depending on edit marker distance.
        • OFF camera blends between edit points at a fixed speed.

Preset Cameras
  • Front, Rear, Right, Left, Overhead
Fixed camera angles rigidly bound to player.

Game Camera
  • Edit scenes using the exact camera as seen during recording.
  • Can't be blended with free camera shots.
  • Good for when clips have been recorded with in-game cinematic camera.

Shake
  • None, Handheld, Drunk, Ground Vibration, Air Turbulence, Explosion
  • Shake Intensity < 1 - 10 >
  • Shake Speed < 5% - 200% >
  • Shake speed is best matched to clip speed i.e. if trying to capture slow motion at 20% clip speed, use 20% shake speed for best effect.
  • Match shake effects when blending camera movement for best effect e.g. handheld to handheld until jump cuts.

Edit Camera
  • Fly camera into position using player movement controls with addtional zoom, roll, and height keybinds to finely tune shot placement.
Editing

Depth of Field
Reliant on Depth of Field enabled in Grand Theft Auto V settings.
  • Focus - < None, Default, Custom >
  • Intensity - < 0 - 100 >
  • Mode - < Automatic, Manual, Target >
Automatic - dynamically focus on objects that cross the middle of the camera focus.
Manual - adjustable focus distance from 0.5 meters to 10,000 meters
Target - Choose player or any entity in the scene

Effects
  • Many post-processing and color effects.
  • Filter intensity 0% - 100%.
  • Saturation, Contrast, Brightness, Vignette intensity -100% to 100%.

Audio
  • SFX Category - Miscellaneous, Vehicle Pass By, Stingers, Horror Stingers, Horror Gore, Horror Animals, Horror Voices, Horror Misc, Crashes, Explosions.
  • SFX - Choose sound effect to place on the marker, too many to list, based on the SFX Category.
  • SFX, Game SFX, Dialogue, Music, Ambient Volume - Set from 0 - 8
  • Score Intensity - Minimal, Low, Medium, High, Maximum.
Blend scenes with different score intensities per edit marker to accentuate atmosphere.
  • Microphone Type - Choose sound focus of scenes.
At Camera centers microphone and stereo effect at camera position in the world.
At Target uses camera focus target as positional microphone, or at player if no target is selected.
Default chooses At Camera or At Target depending on camera settings for that edit.
Cinematic focuses on sounds in the center of the camera frame.

Speed
  • Adjust clip playback speed. < 5% - 200% >
  • Speeds both audio and visuals, including voices and physics effects.

Position
  • Displays marker timestamp and allows fine adjustment of the marker edit position.

Set Thumbnail
  • Set clip screenshot in the project timeline.
  • Useful for adding a text track since the editing is overlayed onto the clip thumbnail.

Anchor
  • Anchors show up as yellow bars on the project timeline and allow other tracks like text and audio to snap precisely to that point.

Transition
  • Fade-in, Fade-out, or None. - Only available for the first and last clips in the project to fade in or out to black.
Director Mode

Director Mode
  • Only available during single player and when not in a vehicle.
  • Choose an actor, setting, and world conditions to record in a controlled environment.

This guide explains Director Mode much better:
