Persuasion choices are set in 5 levels of difficulty:
          Always - Easy - Normal - Hard - Impossible.

Some persuasion options will Always succeed; some are tagged as Impossible that there's no way you are going to persuade them with these options.
For Easy - Normal - Hard options, see Basic Calculation section for details.

Needless to say, this list will be FULL OF SPOILERS.
And VERY LONG. So, if you want to look up a specific dialogue, I suggest you use the search tool (Ctrl+F) with (1)the name of the NPC you're talking to, or (2)the dialogue option you're trying to persuade them with.

May contain obsolete data (e.g., didn't make it into the final game, was patched out, etc.)

- Basic Calculation
* This section is based solely on my observation; please correct me if I made any errors here.

1. Check the level of the NPC you're trying to persuade.
  • Level 1 ~ 5 → a = 1
  • Level 6 ~ 10 → a = 2
  • Level 11 ~ 15 → a = 3
  • Level 16 ~ 20 → a = 4
2. Check the Difficulty of the persuasion option.
  • Easy → b = -1
  • Normal → b = 0
  • Hard → b = 1
3. Evaluation:
  • Your Persuasion level < a + b : Persuasion will always fail
  • Your Persuasion level = a + b : Persuasion will succeed if your Attribute is at least 2 higher than the NPC; otherwise will fail
  • Your Persuasion level > a + b : Persuasion will always succeed

    * Many NPCs will only have Hard options available, so Arx is practically a Persuasion 5 zone.

[FIN] Swear that you were being genuine - the more Magisters that die, the better. She has nothing to fear from you. //Normal

its called dont purchase any persuasion points and watch the game turn instantly crappy. talk to any npc that you can have a bad conversation with(which has got to be close to 80% of them) and eventually during the pointless convo they will give you 1-4 choices all requiring persuasion, or Combat!
persuasion is the worst skill ever and shouldnt be required to avoid combat. so i personally never buy a point of it, to show how stupid this game was designed as far as story and roleplay is concerned.

I'm confused. Is 'always' you always fail or you always make it?
Also, not good at math (etc) so 'easy' is you have to have a 1-2 persuasion above the NPC in question?
The main reason I ask is because I have a fighter with zero persuasion and I want to persuade Stingtail at Fort Joy. The way you worded it is easy is a -1 to a level 1-5 NPC which is a 1. So zero persuasion is needed?

Warron's(Driftwood lv11) difficulty is INT4(normal) STR5(hard) WIT5(hard). Making his base difficulty factor a = 4, not 3. It's a great guide, anyway.
