Brytenwalda has been restored like never before. The Dark Ages are a time of chaos, violence and opportunity. The last of the Britons look for a new King Arthur. The Picts of the north fight for the survival of their ways. While the advancing Angles And Saxons fight for the legendary title Of Brytenwalda over Britannia. What part will you play in history?

Character Creation And Background

The character creation process is the same as the regular Brytenwalda. Just be sure to choose Character Creation right in the main menu. Commonly there is a glitch after the intro that gives the whole background that causes the native vanilla character creation screen to come up. The real screen should look like this.

Now after that you choose your tribe and height and background. Which affects everything about you including the items you start out with. For example you can start out as a monk in a robe with a staff and a book.

Religion - The most easy religion according to the mod creator is Roman Christianity. However, Paganism still exists but simply is quite rare and isolated. With the last Druid at the Sacred Circle and the Merican King Penda with his Pagan Priest at his captiol.

The map is huge and packed with dozens of active factions fighting to the death in a Game Of Thrones with entire Cultures clashing for Supremacy. The very name England bears the mark of the historical victors of that conflict but it could have ended differently. Could you change its history?

Or perhaps you could instead go to Hibernia(Ireland) or Caledonia(Scotland) or one of the many Briton Kingdoms that have been pushed west into Wales.
Recruitment
The recruitment is based upon where a village is. Therefore if you wish for Picts, you go north and so forth. Some of the groups settled across the map with the most diversity being in the South East where many invasions have struck. Below is a map marking where a few of the groups are gathered in. Please note that this is an older map so it may not be exact.

  • Northern Caledonia - The Picts
  • Hibernia and Western Caledonia - The Irish
  • Western Britannia - The Britons
  • Eastern Britannia - The Angles
  • Southern Britannia - The Saxons
  • South East Britannia - The Jutes
  • South East Britannia - Some Frisan Villages

Non-Recruitable - Frank and Dena(Danish) Raiders ravage the South East coastlines.

Regular units are recruited from villages and with better relations you can recruit much more and slightly higher tier troops to start. You can recruit once every day or so unless you have just fufilled a task for the elder. For instance you could recruit five men, agree to a task, recruit another five men and then finish the task and recruit more men all in the same day.

The tasks you are given are dependent upon your level, at first you will get lots of cattle quests and more come as you go one with certain special ones.

Cities or Towns

First, in the cities or towns as some call them. You can try to recruit nobles of that faction, that is if you have high enough renown and money to being with. It appears the required amount of renown is in the mid hundreds.

Second, in the taverns you can recruit higher quality men on average for good prices. Including special units you won't find anywhere else like Spies and Merc Captains that can lead men for you.

Third, there are banks in each city that loan out money in accordance to how good your relation is with that city. Some speculate honor affects it as well but I dispute that.

Trade And Hunting
The trade is Reworked is very vibrant in comparison to the former mods. An innumerable amount of new items have been added including trade items. Not only can you invest in land and businesses, you can now truly have a trade empire with the new feature listed below.

One big new feature is the ability to sponsor caravans and send them to trade in bulk for you. Be wary though, with reward is always some risk as well.

A common trade route in the south east would be between Wales and England. Buying Pig Iron, Silver, Copper Tin, Beer and mead from wales and selling in elsewhere for much higher prices. Silver in particular fetching as high as over 600. While mead can fetch as high as 300, beer 250 in the right places in eastern England.

Wild Herds

They seem to be in many places but I've noticed quite a bit around Din Eidyn in southern Caledonia in particular. You can butcher them for both hides, meat and certain animals even will provide good quality cloaks such as Boar.
Combat

The fighting is the same in most ways as the original mod. You can use warcry with "B" and rallying cry with U to scare the enemy back a few steps or restore a certain percent of your troops health. While doing these yells you stand still vunerable. So these are best done while on a moving horse

Different armies have different ways to command them.

The Angles and Saxons commonly have shieldwalls dependent on organized defence and assault slowly back and forth. In contrast The Picts use quicker, more ranged, skirmishing tactics to wear down the enemy from all sides. I am not well versed enough on the Irish and Britons to provide conclusive insight into them.

Also horses appear to be quite rare among all factions. Then even when you have them they are dangerous to use against any organized ranks of spears. So they are best for attacking loose formations or drawing apart another armies ranks. Only nobles ride them but the unit that has access to them the quickest is the Frisians. Their second tier unit rides a horse.

Last note, in this mod you can set up ambushes and BE ambushed yourself. This sometimes happen you are chasing a unit for a while and finally catch them. Then you appear surrounded and broken up. If you camp out and are attacked then you fight in a camp scene. If they get into the middle of the camp with your chest then they will steal money and items from you.

Blunt Weapons

A major new feature is the ability to tell all your units to use blunt weapons. In most mods units would switch to their hands and uselessly punch. In Reworked, units switch to blunt editions of all their weapons. So they are far more effective. Additionally, flails and other cool new weapons have been added.
The Conflict And History

As the Roman Empire fell the Legions withdrew and the realm fell into chaos. Warlords rose from the former local legionaries and some may have even went back for wifes and to hold lands. They became the Britons loosely united by myth and legend. Their former cities and forts still stand but have fallen into great decay. Even the Hadrians great wall that once held back the Pitts has fallen into ruin and invaders flooded over to loot and burn. As did the Irish who invaded and conquers the north western coastlines.

Also taking advantage of the state of decay were many others. The Angles and Saxons marched across the land pushing back both the new natives to Wales and the southeast replacing them with Kingdoms of their own. In the southeast also came the Jutes who established a small strong Kingdom. Christianity has came with the invaders as well, Paganism has been pushed to only a few extreme enclaves. Though churches cover most of the realms, a sacred circle still exists far in the north.

Which side you will choose?
The Angles And The Saxons

The ancient Angles And Saxons recently have invaded and expanded rapidly across the realm. They dress and fight like none other on the Island but are as divided among themselves as any. The title of the mod comes from their title for the greatest King among them.

Currently, in the mod they have all converted to Christianity except for Mercia which is lead by a Pagan Lord with a pagan priest advising him. Who still follow the ways of the Germanic God Woden. Pagans and Christian priests still roam the countryside searching for converts. About a third of the places are still pagan while most are christian. Particularly in the central and south eastern parts there are many pagans still.

The realm is split roughly in half by the Angles in the east and the Saxons in the west and south. Most of their troops wear heavier armor and use long spears and short blades. Their archers are not elite and they lack crossbowmen. Their Kingdoms range from large and agressive to small and secure such as the East Saxons who hold London.
