Linux Portal 2 Splitscreen. KB, Mouse, & Gamepad
By Sharft 6
I just realised the steam powered forums have gone down so I had to figure this out from memory again the other day. Posting it here so I can quickly remind myself in the future. I guess others could find this useful too.

This method has been working for years and is still working in Sep 2017

How It's Not Done
"joy_remap_player_for_controller1 2" is not a recognised command or launch option on the linux version of portal 2 so don't even bother experimenting with it. If i remember right, plugging something like a steering wheel in didn't push my game pad to player 2 either so save yourself some more time and skip that as well.
How It's Done
0. put steam into big picture mode and configure the gamepad if needed. Make sure the game works alright in single player with the game pad.

//the following commands 1, 2, and 3 go into the console when the game is running
//start the first coop orientation map or the coop lobby
1. ss_map mp_coop_start
or
ss_map mp_coop_lobby3

//enable cheats because it's required for the next command
2. sv_cheats 1

//switch the KB & Mouse input to player 1(pbody) while keeping the gamepad input on player 0(atlas).
3. in_forceuser 1

It seems if you have 2 gamepads, the primary gamepad will control both players (though oddly, it'll control 1 player more than the other - hard to explain). But as long as you leave the primary gamepad alone, one player can use mouse+keyboard while the other player can use the secondary gamepad.
