How to use the Naginata Samurai

a in depth guide of using the most Overrated Unit in Shogun 2.

-Intro

Are you too lazy to move,and exercise?
Do you always loses in skirmish,because of those Peasant bows?

Then fear little,the Naginata Samurai is for you!

-History

it's difficult to know where the Naginata Came from,but some speculation say that The Naginata Could be invented by the monks(Sohei) during the Nara Period.
During the Rise Of The Samurai,or Genpei War Period (1180-1185),the Naginata became one of the common weapon,since most of battles are carried out in cavalry Style combats,so The Naginata were famous during that time,since 25 Bonus Vs Cavalry Yari is still hasn't fully been invented,and used.
Sadly After the firearm(Teppo/Tanegashima)were introduced,the Naginata was less used,since Yari gives the user the ability to rapid advance.

-Statistic

Now let's move on to the statistic of the Unit.

The Naginata Samurai cost 750 Koku,and 150 Upkeep.
The Hattori Naginata Samurai Cost the same,but with a whopping 200 Upkeep.
The move speed is at 1.8(Walk),3.5(Run),1(Crawl)and 5.25(Charge)
The Morale is fairly decent for samurai,10.
The Attack is Better than Yari Samurai,but Worse than Katana Samurai,9.
The Defense is Better than Katana Samurai,but Worse than Yari Samurai,6.
The Charge is worse than both Katana,and Yari Samurai,12.
The Armor is Fluckin Unbalanced,9.
The Cavalry bonus is a nice addition,15.
Their Trait are,they can hide in woods,and Resistant to morale shock,but the
Hattori can actually hide in Scrubs.

-Campaign Tactics

Now let's move on to the Campaign Tactics of the Unit.

While they're versatile,they're not the best unit in the game,don't put your trust in them too much,they're bad at keeping promise.
For Upgrades,having them in vanilla stats is enough,since they good mediocre everything,but if you want to know:
1.Armor Upgrade
I bet you watch alot of Shogun 2 youtuber,and know only one math,9+5=14.
But seriously,you don't need that much armor.
2.Attack Upgrade
This unit benefit much from this upgrade,since it already have a good defense,in form of armor.
3.Cost Downgrade
The most Decent beneficial upgrade this unit could afford is no other than Cost upgrade Since they're mediocre at everything,why not reduce their cost?

-Battle Tactic

Now let's move on to the Battle Tactics of the Unit.
The Naginata has 2 kinds of Battle roles:
1.Arrow Eater
With that 9 Armor,they're one of the most hard to kill in missile fights.
2.Castle Assaulter
You may dissagree with me,but they're the most effective at attacking castles.You see,in Shogun 2, castle battle are different than land battles,in castle battles,this rule must be applied:
2,1. The Defender is always outnumbered
so their best chance to survive is to kill the enemy,as fast as they can,since they have the tactical advantage in their own castle.

2,1,1. The Best Unit for the Defender is a unit with high attacks
in wall battles,the Defender's mission is to kill the enemy who reach the wall Since the enemy climbing the wall comes little by little,killing the first soldier who climb the wall is a must,many defense was lost because the wall was flodded ,and the defender has so little attack,that they let the enemy climbing the wall flood in.
2,1. The Attacker must have a defensive unit.
Unit with High Defense,or armor is a must have in Castle Assault battle,because what is written above is a true statement,the attacker mission is to swarm the castle and a high defense unit is the best for that job,since they can defend them self when they reached the wall,and let the other wall climber to Climb the wall safely,and Swarm the outnumbered Defenders.

Naginata Samurai are great and will hold the line (armorer upgrades make them almost ignore bows). No doubt though Yari Ashigaru are the pound for pound victors though. Yari Samurai are situational, Katana Samurai are killer and expensive. No-Dachi is for the live hard/die hard lifestyle. In short, you do you. It took me a long time to come around to using yari cav instead of katana, and when I did I couldn't believe what I was leaving on the table. Don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and try stuff. Have fun :)

People do have their own playstyle,and I do respect your playstyle,but my Playstyle is to make sure the enemy is defeated as fast as possible,so that's why I Love the Yari Samurai.
it may be a surprise,because how could a Offensive Player love the Yari Samurai,the most Melee Defensive Samurai?(Yari Samurai Actually the only Melee Samurai that has the Least Melee Attack(6),but has the most Melee defense(8))

I like the Yari Samurai because their specialty lies in their Melee Defense(Katana Samurai has Attack,Naginata has Armor,and Nodachi has Charge,the Melee Samurai are basically the superior Attack,Defense,Charge,Armor unit.) Since Melee Defense can't be easily,and the only way to increase melee defense is Experience,General Retainer,and Arts.
but as the Yari Samurai,their Melee Defense is already good,or even the best at Early Game (This makes them Very Good for climbing Castles)
so this leave them into 3 Types of Yari Samurai,Vanilla,Attacker,Armored.
Vanilla Yari Samurai is the worst in mid-late game,but when you combine Attack,or Armor Upgrade,the Yari Samurai suddenly become the most powerful unit.
