Amending my review since the patch and some more play time. Somehow this DLC is such a buggy mess that it doesn’t even track playtime properly for the review.

The bugfix patch changed the new update from fundamentally unplayable with bugs that alter and ruin basic gameplay elements on every run on a moment to moment basis to simply a significant downgrade. Good job Gearbox.

With the exception of maps & music, the DLC content is underwhelming, rushed, and feels like it was designed and made by people with little love for or understanding of the game. New items are mostly hilariously underpowered with design philosophies that are fundamentally invalidated past the first 5-10 minutes of gameplay, have no synergies whatsoever, and feel like many of the slapdash mods I have played on the workshop. If I were to guess, they were tested by running Commando for 10 minutes on medium difficulty and never touched again. Many items have activation requirements that have significant anti synergy with any build or playstyle in the game. There are a very few well designed items like the sale star or electric boomerang, but most new items have no use beyond scrap and serve to clog up the loot pool and drag you down.

Most new content (which is buggy, clearly unfinished, and I will not exaggerate when I say I think it is of a generally inferior quality and around the same quantity as many workshop mods) is gated behind an initial portal that takes you to an alternative route of 3 stages. This is the bread and butter of this DLC that costs double the base game: 3 stages with no variety. Additionally, the DLC has a heavy emphasis on the gold portal in both lore and gameplay, and the extremely outdated Aurelionite fight which is by far the least finished aspect of the base game has not been touched one bit.

The balancing is definitely off as well. If you choose to loop, the storm path is a complete cakewalk. However, if you choose to take the storm path off the bat, you have to fight a boss on Stage 4 who requires you to have absurd mobility to reach (the lightning path is sometimes impossible if you’re unlucky with items), great damage, survivability to deal with his near instakill line of sight laser (the intended counterplay to which being to hide behind a tiny pillar and hope that he doesn’t jerk his head quickly around or use an attack that phases through it and hope he finishes the laser), and AOE to deal with the constant golem swarm. While I do actually like the idea of a boss fight that tests all aspects of a build, the problem is that it happens at stage 4, and stage 3 of the route has a noticably reduced loot pool. You’re almost entirely at the mercy of RNG due to a low chance of getting good scrappers or printers, and the environment is a complete stat check instead of a test of skill (For anyone wondering if it’s a skill issue, I have golden Eclipse 8 and multiple top 10 speedrun times for this game).

The new enemies are also designed in a fundamentally horrible manner for the game. The wurm is insanely buggy, frequently invincible (ofc Gearbox put invincibility phases onto trash mobs the first chance they got, why not?), and feels more like a test of annoyance than anything. The mini Aurelionite feels buggy and “off” in a difficult to describe way, but is overall fine. Those are the only two new enemies in this $15 DLC excluding the boss. Twisted elites were added, with something Risk of Rain 2 should never have under any circumstances: damage reflection to the player. Looping now is a constant slot machine of hoping one of a thousand AOE effects you have active doesn’t touch something in a twisted elites sphere of influence. In practice, any run can instantly end because a twisted elite spawned half the map away and you hit another enemy: this is one of the key reasons I think the game was only playtested for the first dozen minutes of progression or so. Golden elites are whatever.

The state that the game was put into with the accompanying patch is barely acceptable now after the bug patch, and the DLC itself is legitimately offensive. Even without the issue of being clearly rushed by executive meddling, the designers of the DLC clearly did not understand the game they were working on. I would gladly pay $15 to erase the last few weeks of Risk of Rain 2 and go back to anticipating an actual content drop instead of this.

OLD REVIEW BELOW
I've played workshop mods with fewer glitches and more content, and they didn't ship alongside the single worst patch I have ever seen in any game. Doing damage, taking damage, and moving are all neutered with the baffling decision to tie every system to framerate: the new final boss will instantly line of sight kill you if you have a good PC (to say nothing of the other final boss, who is now completely unkillable if you have even a single one of a new common item). Usually, if a game has a bad DLC, it has the decency to not nuke the base game.

This is the epitome of a 9/10 game for me, with the very real potential to become a 10/10. It's some of the most fun I've ever had online, and the gameplay loop is social, addictive, and extremely expressive. You can approach objectives with a wide variety of tactics and ideas, and what you think of can probably work. Additionally, the devs are extremely responsive & managed to create a live service game that justifies its status as a live service game while also not having any of the predatory crap often found in AAA games. You can find the premium currency as a world drop and get the monthly warbonds easily with a very reasonable playtime for free. Additionally, the balancing is on point, and the devs are highly transparent and willing to work with the community on a wide variety of gameplay concerns.

The only thing preventing me from giving a full fledged 10/10 are some bugs currently in the game. These bugs are usually of the funny sort, but some obnoxious gameplay bugs remain: DoT damage is bugged off of host, and sometimes enemies can fire through walls, to name the two worst. However, the bugs have been widely fixed and plans persist for the currently present ones, and I expect this game to be fully deserving of a 10/10 on the current trajectory with a bit more time to cook. I do not give 10/10s lightly.

The review score for this game is going to be deflated due to the whole Sony PSN account thing, but it got walked back in no small part thanks to the developers. Give this game a try: it's the best $40 I've spent on the steam store, and I bought the premium version (which has just cosmetic changes) out of a desire to support the developers of a game of unusual quality: something I almost never do.

Game is fun, but you need to know what you’re getting into.

3 copies of Ash Blossom, 3 copies of Maxx C are necessary for any deck. Not “helps them be stronger” but absolutely necessary to compete. 2x Called by the Grave is close. That’s 6-8 slots occupied by mandatory cards.

It’s modern Yu-Gi-Oh. The meta is at all times a different level of uninteractive dumpster fire, and the banlist is questionable. Enjoyment of Master Duel depends entirely upon how much you like modern Yu-Gi-Oh. I find it pretty fun.

The actual steam game is pretty barebones, but is very F2P friendly, which gives it a major benefit of the doubt to me. You can use your starter resources and craft any deck you see top players use, you just won’t be able to make too many different ones.

I wish it had more content or other formats. Solo mode is pretty tedious and whatever, and the only real alternative with gameplay is Ranked.

At the end of the day, it beats spending $400 for a low end real deck to play the game, and it’s fairly fun.
