The game is very slow and has no real sense of progression with technology only having a minor impact on the game and combat being only won by the person with bigger numbers. The forts make it increadbly difficult to determine if you will get into a winnibale war or the one tile empire somehow fits in 20k men and are forced to move your army to deal with their roving army. When you fight another larger empire there is nothing stopping it from taking hours of your time because there is no disadvantage to being at war for anytime.
