Its fun. The mechanics are good and the story is good so far.
I also haven't experienced any crashes or other technical problems.
I only played single player so can't judge the multiplayer aspects.
People complaining about the whole backtracking stuff just need to get over themselves. It is a normal part of the game. Not every nook and cranny needs to be interesting or contain a reward (but it usually does if you look for cracks in the walls).

Base game is great. It has a good learning curve. It allows you to create your own story for your people or you can play it as a test of your skills at managing a colony of survivors.
The DLCs are not required to have a fulfilling experience but really take the game to a new level.
And it has great mod support.
