The most fun I have ever had with a horde slayer game. The game still has a solid playerbase as well as a dev team that still releases content. The game also offers a great sense of progression with the numerous weapons and traits you can unlock. And how could i forget the best part.....it has hats.

I've been playing this game for 13 years now, and if it wasn't a great game at it's core I wouldn't have stuck around this long. There's no other shooter on the market that captures what tf2 is. A casual no rules class shooter with deep mechanics and a plethora of content (both official and community). In development there was a lot of effort and time poured into this game which resulted in a captivating experience with unique characters and a one of a kind in-game atmosphere. Structurally at it's core tf2 is an amazing game that can't be replicated. So why a negative review?

Tf2 has been neglected for quite some time. Unfortunately the decline in valve's attention and effort for this game started around the Meet your Match update, When I say this update was bad I mean it was a very strong catalyst in the decline of tf2s player base and matchmaking experience. Competitive mode was a failure on launch that never revived, while casual mode fundamentally changed casual tf2 for the worst imo. Valve servers were replaced with casual mode servers that resulted in much shorter server lifetimes on top of people being incentivized to re-queue due to server populations dying out. Causal mode was improved over time in some aspects, however it took years for features to be reintroduced that had been in quickplay since it's inception. There have been a few positive additions by valve such as last years summer update and the recent implementation of 64 bit for the game (this was a really nice boost for the games performance). However, despite these additions there is an elephant in the room which Valve has ultimately failed to tackle in any meaningful way. The Bot crisis that has plagued this game for too damn long.

If you go queue for a game of casual there is a good chance you could be matched with or against hordes of aimbotting snipers. These bots are hosted in groups and can quickly kill a server if they gain enough server slots. One fatal flaw of the casual system is the party queue option having 6 slots. This allows bots to gain majority numbers in casual servers which leads to players not possessing the option to kick them. This is on top of dealing with a class that can one shot any class without resistances and has unlimited range in sight lines. As a result, the official matchmaking system has become a revolving door of trying to find bot free servers while simultaneously having to stay alert for any bots attempting to join active games. Valve's attempted ban waves and the removal of voice, text and chat commands for f2ps has failed in addressing this issue. Bots can often have premium accounts (most that I see do) and there is currently no reason for bot hosters to believe Valve will actively prevent them from ruining games. These flaws and issues coupled with Valve's failure to rectify any solutions is why this review is set to not recommended.

At the end of the day Tf2 is an old game going on close to 2 decades. The charm it possesses in it's characters and gameplay have kept it in a small spotlight with a dedicated fan base that lives on. Even with all of the neglect and bad decisions that has led to a decline in the games relevance I still enjoy playing it and probably always will. People who are interested in picking this game up should realize there are quite a few options to avoid bots and short map times by looking into community servers. That being noted the issue of official servers being in the sorry state they are is unacceptable on Valves part. A tweet from 2 years ago has been followed up with complete radio silence and lack of action. Casual mode is not an adequate replacement for quickplay in its current state, especially with the bot crisis. I would happily give this game a thumbs up if Valve would prove they are willing to work through these glaring issues. Actions speak louder than words, and it's past time for Valve to take serious tangible action. Fix TF2.
