XCOM 2 is the sequel to Firaxis’ reboot of the 90’s X-COM games. XCOM 2 retains many aspects of the reboot, for example simplified base building, a (mostly) two action system, and a boardgame like approach instead of the simulation approach of the original games. XCOM 2 is not a simple game, but rather prioritizes different things like a faster pace and an emphasis on eliminating enemies before they can act. To facilitate this, XCOM 2 introduces several new mechanics, notably the ability to start missions concealed and set ambushes for your unwitting foes. Turn limits in many scenarios force players to act aggressively or fail. XCOM features like a world map, soldier progression, customizable soldiers (excellent options), permanent death, morale, bad rookies, good enemy variety, and the possibility of glorious chaos all return. The game includes randomly generated maps and fantastic mod support. XCOM 2 can be brutal, you are leading a resistance movement, not an army. Don’t be afraid to try easy mode if you are new to XCOM. Ironman (single save mode) is fun, but not recommended for new players. DLCs are good. War of The Chosen deserves its own review. Alien Hunters isn’t recommended for beginners.
