First things first, this is a visual novel first and a tactical RPG second. ( I think the advertising for this game can be a bit misleading from the trailer) You will spend A LOT of time in dialogue and cutscenes. It took me 2 hours before i had a real battle outside of tutorials.

The art and music (rather addictive actually) are fantastic and the voice acting is good. Not everything is voice acted but the main dialogue usually is.

The combat is fun yet basic until you get the ability to evolve during them. (roughly 3 hours in)

The game is also a horror game, yes you read correctly. It is a horror game with digimon in it. It's not for kids. Mostly through implied actions/dialogue . There's no gore in my experience so far.

If you are put off by the sheer amount of text that comes with visuals novels i honestly don't see that changing with this game. It can be a real slog if you are after digimon battles. I would recommend the cyber sleuth games for that fix. (even they have quite a bit of text)

This a great visual novel so far and the gameplay is rather fun when it happens (You do get the option to do free battles and grind but that happens about 3 hours in.) If you don't mind reading and you love digimon i do recommend it, if you aren't into them I would stay away. Even hardcore digimon fans might struggle with this title.

To sum it up- A great visual novel but it might not be the game most digimon fans are after. (Even if it is well done) I will give it a good rating because honestly it deserves it, just know what you are getting into.

EDIT: Just wanted to give a little more information regarding choice in this game. Usually you have 3 options to pick from each with a different color associated. Much like the Mass effect renegade/paragon system or the Alignment system from the SMT series but much less obvious. These choices effect certain digmon evolutions available to you and later ones for your party members. From my understanding they can also affect the fates of characters aswel.

They honestly have really weird naming choices Wrathful/Moral/Harmony and have odd colors associated to them. Red not being wrathful just seems...wrong. A lot of the times they also just don't make sense. You may find yourself picking a color over the text given if you need a certain ending/digimon for completionists. Two examples of this from different conversations were "Help them out" and " Just watch" as Moral options. Just seems rather contradictory.

EDIT: Somewhat bummed out after i realised that some things you cant prevent until new game+ It really puts a dampen on my ability to care about choices. Gating things behind the expectation i'd go through the game again seems a bit of kick the the b***s. Feels like im being punished regardless of how thorough i am. Some of your choices just do not matter on the first playthrough, you will waste time and effort on certain characters (Don't want to spoil.) their fates you cannot change. Imagine putting all that time and effort into affinity and it outright doesn't matter until a second playthrough 10/10 game design.

IMPORTANT EDIT : The more I get into the game the more flaws i find. Affinity being useless on some characters due to scripted events and the sheer amount of repetition In conversations. Characters arguing in circles over and over. Sometimes less is more, I think the devs really should have took that into consideration. I feel zero motivation to do a second playthrough if my first one feels like a kick in the teeth due to to scripted events. You get punished regardless of how thorough and smart you are with dialogue responses and affinitys. Characters will die, regardless of your effort. It's incredibly lame. At this point i don't even think i have the drive to finish it, which is really sad because I was incredibly interested in the story at one point but now i just see no reason to even try.

I have thought about giving it a negative review instead but I did get a few enjoyable hours out of it. Hopefully this long review can help people make a decision.

anyone reading this it's not actually 2hrs of tutorial and dialogue, it only took me 63 minutes to reach my first real battle. Good review though!

Really well put review that can give people the answers they are looking for before making a purchase.

Helped me decide to pass on this.

I do not enjoy this format and style for a Digimon game and will not be investing money into it if it means giving the Publishers the idea that the majority would want another of type of Digimon game again (especially for $60 bucks).

Seems only a small minority are into the VN over gameplay... BUTI am so happy for those who are into it!

Great review but sadly I'm realy not in too visual novels but I love RPGs I may pick this one up when on sale as I like the idea of building up multiple digimon's.
But thanks for the great review none the less.

There's honestly not a lot of gameplay. Most of it comes from Free Battle that allows you to grind and recruit digimon but it's super basic, the rest usually come from boss battles and certain story fights.

The story is good so far but it is very slow. If you are hesitant i honestly wouldn't take the risk. This is literally a visual novel with an added on minigame.

Does it feel like there's going to be a lot to the story at least? I'm looking to pick this up since i love Tactics and play a lot of visual novels but the price tag is really holding me back.

yup i have played digimon next order in my ps4 and cyberh sleuth in my pc and i was shocked with the amount of text in this game, i have played rpgs before but this game is 90% text 10% gameplay seems like a VN with mini games, like the games we used to get in the 2000s in school to learn about history or maths.

I'm not someone who usually plays VN's but loved 13 Sentinels and also love digimon, would you say there's enough gameplay to satisfy? Really trying to gauge if I'll stick with this.
