The world looks amazing, the music throughout the game absolutely wonderful, and the gameplay solid, deep, varied and interesting. The amount of skills and the possible different combinations that you get are mind boggling, and most have very significant effects on the way you play the game. Combat can be done strategicaly with the Turn mode, or just plain old regular real time action, and are just equally as viable and fun!

Though you are presented with a central plot, much of the lore is tied to the gameplay in an interesting manner and presented in a way that not only allows you the freedom of choosing how much of it you want to read/see/hear, but also adds to the sublime world Supergiant has created. The game has atmosphere, it has character, and it's a testament to how good Supergiant is at building a world, which in my opinion, is second to none.

Despite how different this game is from Supergiant's previous game, Bastion, to compare both games is inevitable. Cloudbank is in most ways busier than the areas surrounding Caelondia, but its aethetics are darker and more muted. The music in Transistor is a bit more synthetic compared to the more instrumental nature of Bastion's music, but is no less wonderful. Gameplay wise, Transistor outperforms Bastion in every which way, offering more options and a more fleshed out combat system. Narrative wise though, it feels like Transistor falls short of Bastion by way of being just slightly less coherant and emotional. But, it is still really well done and stands on its own really well.

My only complaints about the game is how short it is, because I find myself just wanting MORE. While Recursion mode (New Game+) satisfies my desire for more gameplay, I also want more of the story, more of the music, and more of the world. Also, the game sometimes fails to explains the mechanics of its skills properly, leaving you to either figure some things out for yourself or consult a guide.

Should you play this? Absolutely. Definitely do consider buying the soundtrack alongside the game, but do not hesitate to give the music a listen first by way of free streaming courtesy of Supergiant themselves. I only wish the soundtrack had the different variations of all/most of the songs, such as the BGMs with Red humming to them, or the instrumental versions of a few others.

UPDATE: Supergiant has released an extended version of the soundtrack with the aforementioned humming and instrumental verions.
