I've been playing since the first closed beta and still play Quake Live multiple nights a week, and the last few patches have finally pushed QC into recommendation territory.

This game fills a void that you can't find in any new games, and I'd recommend any FPS player add it to their repertoire even if you just use it to warm up or sharpen up your skills a few hours a week (aka the gateway drug to addiction).

If you are finding yourself bored to death by the oversaturation of slow games, camp fests with huge lulls in action, or watered down mechanics that don't reward skill (battle royale bloat, Overawtch) then QC is your answer out of any newer game on the market.

Summary:

Game is fun; exponentially more so the better you get
Quake is an adrenaline rush that 99.9% of other games don't touch
QC is pretty good now, but I think it stands to only improve drastically from this point
Engine and netcode are much better than beta and will continue to improve
More content (maps, gametypes, etc) are the most lacking part and still on the way
Out of game stuff is lagging behind in game (UI, tutorials, current queue system, etc)
Some parts of the game don't make sense or just haven't caught up to the development of the rest of the game
