A great sequel to the first South Park game but ultimately lacking in story and has missed opportunities.

Firstly I will just put this out there for those of you reading this trying to decide which of the two South Park games to buy. I flat out recommend you ignore this game and buy the first game, South Park: The Stick of Truth. That is not to say that this is not a good game and you do not really need to play the first game to understand this as there is very little reference to the first game except for perhaps one or two minor parts of this game.

So why do I recommend you buy the first game and not this? Firstly the story. The previous game had a great storyline, Elves, Trolls, Wizards, Mages, a Stick of Truth and a great plot with a twist at the end. Everything in the previous game tied in and flowed really well and it worked perfectly. This game continues on from the end of the previous game and instead our familiar South Park friends are now playing Superheroes. The basic premise of the story is great, the Superheroes instead of the previous type powers are great, essentially Scambles the cat has been lost (or stolen) and we have to find him in order to receive a reward of $100 so ♥♥♥♥ and Friends can become a real franchise! The problem is that the story just doesn't feel like it flows very well, it seems like most of the story happens during the night time periods and they just feel like filler content rather than actual progressive content.

The second reason I don't recommend this over the previous game is that it tries to expand on what the previous game had done but failed miserably. I love when sequels are the same as the previous games and expand on what they already had because it usually works really well. An example here would be using the toilets, yes this is a completely useless thing to be able to do but in the previous game you sat down, mashed a button and you were good to go. This game takes it a step further and makes it incredibly difficult to 'master' using the toilet by turning it into a minigame. Sounds like an awesome addition? Maybe, but it is very unintuitive and until you really know what order to press the buttons in you really don't have alot of time to process what is happening at first.

Yet another example of expanding on the previous game that I feel didn't really work, the buddy system. In the previous game, you had occasionally the need to call one of your buddies to help remove a certain obstacle or you needed a certain power to get past something. This game does also require certain powers to be able to solve some of the puzzles in the game but it takes the buddy system to a whole new level. There are so many obstacles in so many places that it feels like everything is just locked behind the whole buddy system so you can't go anywhere or do most of what you might want to do early on, like explore and take selfies and loot everything you can find. This whole extended buddy system and increased number of puzzle solving stuff just ruins the enjoyment and pacing of the game in my opinion.

A couple of other little things I would like to point out is that in the previous game you could go to Canada and there was a whole section of gameplay there which I won't spoil but it was fun and it flowed with the game really well. In this game there is just a wall blocking Canada off and you just can't go there. The last thing I would also mention is that I feel like they missed out a whole bunch of Steam / Uplay achievements here too. I personally like hunting for achievements and the previous game had achievements that were very fun and reasonable to get and made sense. In this game they miss many achievement opportunities such as to get every possible follower on 'Coonstagram' (The games version of Instagram). There was such an achievement in the previous game so why not here? No achievement for buying a certain item in game that costs an achievement worthy amount of money, no achievement for collecting or finding all Memberberries (a collectable referencing some of the previous games events) in the game. Also a lack of achievements for collecting all weapons and costume items which I believe were in the previous game. Seems like the developers just either didn't care enough about the achievements here, they were too busy rushing the game out or they just simply missed fairly simple opportunities.

So overall, not a great review by any means BUT I still do recommend this game, it is not a bad game. It has that South Park humor and the usual familiar South Park characters and NPC's so I do recommend you play the game especially at a discounted price but absolutely go buy the other game if you are trying to decide which one to buy.
