Before staring Winter’s Symphonies I was very curious about the story it has to tell. This game looked simply gorgeous to me and since I am a huge fan of Visual Novels, due to their storytelling, I was very eager to find out more about Sophie’s story.

Sophie returns to her hometown after leaving a lot of things behind. She just desires a quiet and peaceful life after everything that happened. One day she meets an old friend on the train. Later on, he even moves into her house. Although she doesn’t want him to find out about her past it’s unavoidable. Both of them are starting to get closer and figuring out their dreams.

I have to admit, I expected Winter’s Symphonies to be another light-hearted Visual Novel with a touch of dramatic moments, yet this game managed to totally threw me off by its unexpected events. Although Winter’s Symphonies does contain a few light-hearted scenes, it deals with very serious topics and I ended up totally sympathizing with Sophie. She really has one of the worst luck and while the story is nothing really outstanding, I ended up getting hooked until the end while hoping for Sophie to get back her confidence. The story might get very depressing at times, so you should keep in mind that it’s rather a sad game with a serious tone. However, this game does contain very creepy scenes and will make you shudder at times.

On the side note, romance is definitely not the main genre in this game. While it does imply romantic feelings between Sophie and Charles, it only takes up a very short part of the game and most of the time both of them are acting like strictly friends. It focuses on Sophie’s story, including her past and future. I found it very disappointing that the romance wasn’t really present between Sophie and Charles as they would make such a lovely couple in my opinion.

There are multiple bad endings available in Winter’s Symphonies. You can notice which choice will lead to a bad end immediately and these endings are really short as well. It’s mostly played like a kinetic novel as the bad endings are really sudden and out of nowhere. I even think it is not necessary to go through the bad endings because some of them don’t even really make sense compared to the whole game.

I really enjoyed that this game was a bit confusing in the beginning while slowly revealing the past of Sophie. At first, I couldn’t understand her actions and Sophie in general. This game, however, offers time jumps and you will be able to actually read what happened in the past. The story really ended up surprising me and was totally not predictable at all. I wanted to find more about what happened to Sophie and Charles during playing this game.

As I already said above, the art is really gorgeous. A very few CGs, however, looked really weird to me as I thought they were simply creepy, while the scene was not intended to be scary. The background especially stood out to me and although it does not offer a lot of CGs most of them were done really well. I especially adored Sophie’s sprite! The soundtracks were especially relaxing and it was pleasant to listen to them. I just wished there was a CG gallery available in this game so you can always go back to look at them, but again, there are only very few CGs available.

In the end, I can say Winter’s Symphonies was an enjoyable experience and was a game that ended up totally surprising me. While it does not have an outstanding plot and only tells the story of Sophie’s life, it was still unpredictable and I ended up to empathize with her. Life can be really unfair sometimes and this game does certainly show us this.
