Early Access Review
I'm quite simple. When I see a cute anime girl in a game, I am immediately interested in it. In this case, Mahou Arm's main character looked very appealing to me, although I like to play female characters in any RPG game, regardless. After all, nothing is better than an adorable and small girl actually being badass while defeating enemies with cool weapons, especially if it's a hack and slash game. Given that the previous games of the developers are visual novels, I was especially interested in how Mahou Arms would turn out as it's a new approach for them.

It is important to mention that Mahou Arms is truly an early access game, as the developers stated they are planning to finish it in 2022. As of now, this game only has very little content available with two story-missions and an extra side-mission. In total, the story missions offer around two hours playing time. Additionally, there is a detailed production roadmap available where it's possible to check the monthly planned development of Mahou Arms.

An Alien Invasion

So, when it comes to the story, there is not much to see yet in Mahou Arms other than Amelia, the main character in the two story-missions, trying to defeat some aliens. With further development, there will be more playable characters available. Something that slightly confused me was that the second mission was called the third chapter, although I'm not sure whether it was an error, it didn't bother me too much. The focus in this game, however, is definitely the gameplay.

Hack, Slash, and Jump

First of all, whilst there are a lot of different combos available in Mahou Arms, it definitely lacks some sort of tutorial. In the beginning, I didn't know how to use them and other than online, there is no way to look them up in-game. I was thrown into the game without any idea how it works other than smashing my mouse buttons. Other controls are not getting explained either so I didn't know for a while that it's possible to use special abilities like, for instance, slowing down the enemies, so it will be easier to beat them. That being said, the gameplay made more sense after looking them up on the internet

Sadly, there are no boss fights available yet and only three different types of enemies the player can encounter. However, I liked that each enemy worked differently, and thus, it got quite hectic when a lot of them spawned and I had to defeat them. You see, there are parts in the game where defeating every enemy is necessary to continue to the next part of the map, although some minor enemies can be skipped at times as well. For the end of the mission, a few waves of enemies spawn until the player defeats them for successfully completing the mission.

The extra side-mission only requires the player to beat a wave of enemies within a specific amount of time. Although it only offers a small map and no new insight into the story, it might be useful for training purposes when the player wants to test out one or another combo.

Save Points

Whilst there are save points available throughout the game, the first mission does not contain them. I found it was quite a hassle as I needed to continue playing it for a while until I completed it since I was not aware of it. Each mission is not super short either so that greatly annoyed me. In addition to this, I was delighted to see that the second mission implemented save points, however, there were only two available with the first one being in the very beginning so that didn't really help me either. The last one, at least, made sense as it was right before the final battle.

Graphics and its Immersion

So, I have to admit that I liked the graphics quite a lot in Mahou Arms. Especially during the areas where it rained, it looked like some of the raindrops directly fell on the screen so it was satisfying to watch, to say the least. Other than that, I loved the animation during the battles where Amelia just jumps around and takes out her scythe or gun to hit the enemies. There is a lot of variety of animations available as well as the player can attack while being in the air or just decide to stay underground.

Cutscenes are very well-executed and work as an interactive manga, although they are fairly short as they only appear when starting a mission or successfully completing one. However, I liked the concept of these scenes quite a lot as it feels like I was reading a manga that was connected to some gameplay as well. During the missions, there are still dialogues available and Amelia can interact with people she happens to meet during her journey, although the cities seem to be fairly empty with the exception of the dangerous aliens she tries to get rid of.

H Patch

So, there is even an additional free adult patch available for Mahou Arms. It was hard for me to picture at first how it even would fit into the game, however, they only work like interactive 3D CGs and are entirely optional since they don't offer any new insights into the story. I even found the scenes didn't fit into the rest of the game at all and it felt like they were only implemented for the purpose of having some juicy scenes. However, this patch works a little bit differently than usual as the player has to boot the game up through a launcher and only log into their steam account to confirm they bought it before, so the actual playing hours won't add up on steam either.

So, what do we have in the end?

Mahou Arms doesn't offer a lot of content, yet, but has a lot of potential so far. While I cannot judge the story as it barely reveals anything, I liked Amelia a lot and cannot wait for more cute girls to appear to defeat the aliens. Additionally, despite the lack of the tutorial, I enjoyed the presentation of the game and the battles are quite engaging. That being said, Mahou Arms is probably a game that will appeal to hack and slash fans and I will definitely follow its development throughout the months.
