Admittedly, I didn't play a lot of shooters before and despite being not good at this type of genre at all, I was willing to give Bullet Girls Phantasia a try due to the adorable girls. I, however, think that it's tough to enjoy this game if the player isn't into this kind of genre since it takes up most of the playing time. Although I didn't have any expectations before starting this game, since it is noticeable that it focuses on its fanservice a lot instead of a highly developed plot, I still feel myself getting drawn to more silly games at times, where I don't have to think a lot but just enjoy the happenings in front of my screen and luckily, Bullet Girls Phantasia definitely meets these requirements.

Well, first of all, there isn't a lot going on in Bullet Girls Phantasia when it comes to the story. Although there are story sequences available before and after a mission that gets displayed in the style of a visual novel, these scenes are very short and are, therefore, not really in-depth. During playing, I noticed that this game is not meant to be taken seriously, however, I definitely enjoyed it for what it is: A shooter with adorable girls running around using weapons and shooting down the bad guys.

Each chapter contains multiple missions the player has to complete to be able to move to the next one. These missions are available in three different difficulties although the hardest one, Ecstasy, only gets unlocked after finishing the mission on another difficulty for the first time. During a mission, there is always a goal the player has to fulfill although it isn't always to kill all enemies but sometimes reaching a certain destination, which is displayed on the map, is enough to complete it successfully. I liked that I didn't have to kill everything all the time, however, I still got rid of all the enemies most of the time because it was just too much fun to kill them so I couldn't skip them.

When there is a boss available in the end, skipping them by reaching the goal isn't possible, so in these cases, it's necessary to defeat them. Obviously, these bosses are tougher than normal enemies, although, outside of a boss fight, there are many occasions where a lot of enemies spawning at the same time when the player triggers them by reaching a certain part of the mission. The wonderful thing here is that I never knew when enemies would pop up out of nowhere so I was always on guard and knew that only because none are showing up on the map currently, that doesn't necessarily mean that it will stay this way. Sometimes the way to the destination is blocked and can only be accessible after defeating all the enemies.

At times, I had to pay attention to my surroundings as well. For instance, when I was in a boss fight normal enemies kept spawning and after a while, I realized that there was a hidden spawn point of them I didn't destroy yet. Since bosses take a little bit longer to defeat, it comes in handy to take things like that into account as they don't appear on the map. Treasure chests, that contain new items as well as bonuses, such as filling up a certain percentage of your HP, are getting displayed on the map although the location is sometimes hidden since the layout of the map isn't very detailed and just shows its player in roughly which direction they have to go. Additionally, there are different kinds of clothes and underwear, as well as weapons, available for each girl which can either be found in missions or bought in the shop.

With the continuation of the story, new playable characters are getting added to the party although the player can only select the character they play with and their partner which is an NPC that follows the player around during their mission. A thing I liked here is that not all girls are selectable for every mission so sometimes I had to stick with another character instead of just playing with the same one for every mission. The fanservice becomes noticeable here as the clothes and underwear are getting ripped off when the player receives damage from the enemies. Something that slightly annoyed me here was that when I was standing in the middle of a lot of enemies, the animation of the clothes getting ripped off popped up one after another although all I wanted was just to dodge away. This, sadly, greatly disturbed my immersion.

Another big part of the fanservice in Bullet Girls Phantasia is the drilling mode that takes place before recruiting a new girl to the party. There are a lot ofโ€ฆ suspicious tools available here the player can use on a girl however they want. If desired, this mode can be repeated in the menu. In regular missions and the drilling mode, there are different grades available with the highest one being SSS. For a good grade in missions, the player has to fulfill specifics tasks, for instance, killing a lot of enemies, finishing the mission in a short time and receiving only a little amount of damage, however, just successfully completing the main goal is enough to advance with the game although there is a time limit as well for each mission.

The missions are taking place in a dungeon-like area. I found the design, however, rather simple and quite repetitive as it felt like I was going through the same area for multiple missions. Luckily, compared to the dungeon designs the girls' sprites are definitely high-quality and even animated with multiple poses and facial expressions which made it a joy for me to go through the story elements Bullet Girls Phantasia has to offer. Since each girl has an entirely different personality, there will definitely be one or another girl the player will find utterly adorable. In my case, I just loved all of them. Additionally, this game contains voice over as well which greatly helped with the immersion.

Bullet Girls Phantasia contains great fanservice and is a game that should not be taken seriously at all. The story is rather shallow here, yet the gameplay and especially the adorable girls make up for it more than enough. Although I was originally not really a big fan of shooters, the girls here definitely sold me immediately and I honestly think without them, Bullet Girls Phantasia would not be the same. Another positive aspect I'd like to mention is that despite the game originally getting released with a 30FPS cap, it got patched very shortly after that, so it supports 60FPS now as well. That being said, those who are looking for a rather silly but entertaining game with a lot of fanservice will definitely be able to appreciate this game.
