To be honest, I’ve already given up the thought of being able to experience Taisho x Alice episode 1 with a proper localization until pencil suddenly revealed the rerelease of this otome game with a completely new English translation and I have to say I’m glad I held off on playing this visual novel back when it got its first translation in 2017. Another major difference here is that this version only includes Japanese voice acting. Aside from the new translation, I was interested in Taisho x Alice before due to the gorgeous artwork although a very big plus for me was the reverted fairytales this game has to tell. But again, I guess fairytale themes just fit well with otome games.

Taisho x Alice episode 1 opens with the heroine suddenly finds herself in a world filled with darkness and without any prior memories. She meets another guy there who claims to have no memories as well besides his name “Alice” and then, he decides to name the heroine “Arisu”. Together, they go through the darkness until they happen to find a mirror to pass it and enter the Mirror Land. In the Mirror Land, characters from fairytale await the heroine, but the special thing here is that their genders are swapped.

First of all, I really liked the heroine Arisu in Taisho x Alice episode 1. In every route, she is the first one who falls for the love interest and even tries to win his heart, which is pretty much the reverted role from most otome games. It’s soon noticeable that Arisu has her own mind and isn’t afraid to take initiative. I’d even say she is a strong female lead who isn’t afraid of either getting rejected or openly flirting with the guy she likes. I enjoyed the concept of the girl chasing after a guy who seems to not like her and despite everything she still refuses to give up but sticks to the guy until she finally manages to win his heart. Although she falls for the love interest quite fast, I believe anyone can relate to her feelings as they are all utterly adorable and handsome.

Taisho x Alice episode 1 borrows a lot from the fairytale narrative and I found it very interesting that the stories are similar but the writer still created their own story. While these tales definitely do fit for each route, they get slightly reverted overall, although that’s something I’ve already guessed given that Cinderella and Red Riding Hood who are supposed to be girls are actually guys in this visual novel. It was hard for me to picture what to expect at first, but in the end, I’m glad they didn’t follow the original stories, I mean, otherwise, it’d be quite boring when you exactly know all mysteries beforehand. The game tells its own fairytale while the reader feels nostalgic and of course, a lot of magical moments are available here.

I didn’t expect Taisho x Alice episode 1 to be that light-hearted but I loved it. While there are serious moments, it rather focuses on the happily ever after and eventually becoming happy. This, however, isn’t always so simple and every character has their own history they have to cope with first. There are a few slice-of-life scenes at the beginning where the reader can experience how the heroine tries to get close to the love interest. The story managed to surprise me by its reveals I did not see coming but when I thought about past scenes, the direction the story will go was hinted earlier on as well and perfectly made sense to me. Something I was quite disappointed in was the pace of its story as I felt like while the story was good each route was simply too short so I couldn’t really understand the romantic development between the characters. This sadly affected all routes and I would have wished for more scenes before the confession.

A special feature I noticed here is that the perspective changes at times and the reader can see the thoughts of the love interest. Sadly, these scenes were very limited but I still loved them as they greatly helped with being able to understand each character better. It’s important to mention that while Taisho x Alice does not contain any sexual scenes, there are indeed a lot of sexual jokes implemented which really surprised me. It’s refreshing when characters can joke around, yet I didn’t expect to read such content in a light-hearted game even if it’s not meant to be serious. These scenes, however, were utterly entertaining and managed to make me laugh a few times.

As the name already hints at, Taisho x Alice is an episodic game and there are three episodes in total with an epilogue. In episode 1, the player can romance two love interests which are Red Riding Hood and Cinderella although future love interests already show up during their routes. The branch of the story happens very early in the game right after the prologue where the player can select whose story they want to play first. These two routes are not tied to each other in any way and there isn’t a recommended order which one to play first. Even though there isn’t a connection between each of them yet, I am hoping to find more out about who Arisu is as even though I reached a happy end with both guys, it still feels unsatisfying. Additionally, there are bad ends available in Taisho x Alice episode 1 yet they don’t give any new insight into the story.

The artwork is gorgeous in Taisho x Alice episode 1 and I especially adored the sweet CGs, however, there were so few CGs available which really is a pity. I have to say that the character seemed a bit lifeless as there are no animations at all and there are only a few different poses available here. The facial expressions, on the other hand, were well done and had a lot of variety. That being said, I was quite annoyed at the resolution as it wasn’t really high for this game so even the text was noticeably blurry when I played the game on fullscreen. Playing in windowed, however, wasn’t an option either as the window is way too small in its native resolution. Additionally, this visual novel has top-notch voice acting as well as the fitting soundtracks.

Taisho x Alice episode 1 is quite short, yet I had a lot of fun going through Red Riding Hood’s and Cinderella’s stories. Something I really liked here is that Arisu actually persuades the love interests first and has her own mind which she doesn’t stray from. I, however, had issues with understanding the romantic development as the story feels rushed and there aren’t a lot of events available here before the confession. Regardless, the message behind each route of Taisho x Alice episode 1 was very sweet, yet I still feel very unsatisfied with this entry and can’t wait until the next entries are getting localized so the unexplained mysteries will get revealed.
