Many Fallout 4 reviews coming out right now are either "Negative: It wasn't rpg enough for me" or "Positive: I don't have much experience with Fallout games and this was really fun". This review will be both, and neither.

To start off with, I am scoring Fallout 4 at 71/100.

It is a solid game that I found both enjoyable and lacking at the same time. As someone whose fairly versed with the Fallout universe, I can say that I have mixed feelings about the legacy this game will leave behind. *Here it comes.... he's gonna say it wasn't an rpg*..... While this may be true to a certain degree, I honestly don't feel like this game failed too much harder in this regard than say.... 3 or New Vegas. While I don't feel that it was very true to Fallout's origins as an open world rpg, it did provide some fresh points, such as the ability to build up settlements that left me feeling like there was a somewhat adequate appetizer towards what I wanted, but no main course. Where Fallout 4 truly fails in its rpg seeking quest is the skill system. I was very disappointed in the skill tree and felt that it limited the character's unique potential. This was obviously a quest to bring Fallout even further into the mainstream and I feel this particular choice was a mistake.

RPG Elements: 50/100.

Next up is it's FPS and Open World Elements. Fallout 4's devs focused heavily on this and the fruits of their labor are fairly impressive. The new option of unique weapon modifications provides an avenue for disappointing rpg seekers to bury their sorrows in. Another aspect of the game I found particularly enjoyable was the map. The open world is extensive and full of unique discoveries and challenges, as one would expect from a Fallout game.

FPS and Open World Elements: 90/100.

Combat: Fallout 4's combat also disappointed and satisfied me. I was VERY disappointed by the choice to provide power armor early in the game. I found this to be unneeded and took away from the early game enjoyment and challenge. Outside of the power armor debacle, Fallout 4's combat was solid but unimpressive. As already mentioned, the ability to customize weapons added to the uniqueness of the combat and helped to salvage Fallout 4's otherwise bland and repetitive combat.

Combat: 60/100.

Finally I'll be covering the Graphics and General Atmosphere of the game. This was an area I was fairly concerned about as launch neared. I was worried that the dev's potential desires to wow us with next gen graphics would take away from the dirty, disheveled looks of the past games I had enjoyed so much. I can say however that I was very surprised by how great the game looked. Props to the devs for creating an absolutely wonderful looking game without taking away from the wasteland's feel.

Graphics: 85/100.

Overall Impressions: This is a game that many Fallout purists will probably dislike, but rpg and combat shortcomings aside, Fallout 4 is still a solid game that may not be GOTY material, but will still be worth your time and money.
