I love the idea, but the "game" needs a little more polish before I can recommend it.

This app can run in both standard and VR. Since I don't have a VR headset, I ran the game in standard mode on my Steam Deck, which isn't the intended experience, but I can still point out some issues.

First of all, the controls are lacking. It's developed from an educational standpoint, sure, but there needs to be some gaming experience applied in order to make the inputs familiar. Holding the button for right-click in order to rotate the view seems cumbersome; why not have this automatically bound to mouse movement, and have right-click be a toggle between the camera rotation and the cursor? As it is, moving a mouse (in my case, using a trackpad for mouse movement) does nothing unless you click or hold a button.

I understand that the devs of this program were trying to cut back on performance hits... but several free-standing "statues" were actually just flat images mapped in a 3D way that makes me think of the trees in Super Mario 64. This is 2024, not 1996. Please take time to make the statues more 3D! If you guys are worried about performance, perhaps add quality toggles (like adjustments for anti-aliasing, resolution, sampling, etc.) to have the options of higher or lower overall quality.

Finally, it seems largely unfinished, as there is nothing upstairs. I assume it will be added to in the future? Some feedback on this would be nice.

Again, the idea is great, but the software is greatly lacking. Until improvements are made, I'm not recommending this, for now.

UPDATE October 13th, 2024: Since posting this review, the developer has responded, promising improvements and explaining the technical challenges of a single person making this "game" feel more complete and polished. As I can't change the recommendation of this to "Informative" or similar, I will leave it as "Not Recommended" for now until more improvements are made... However, the fact that the dev was quick to respond is promising of the software's future!

UPDATE November 27th, 2024: I can tell that the developer believes in this software, as the amount of exhibits have doubled in size, and some statues which were completely flat are now fully 3D. I would like to think that the lost works would get a pseudo-3D effect (flat on one side, 3D on the other), but I'm not sure if the dev will go for this idea.

The controls are still clunky, but can be compensated for via macros. Therefore, I am changing my recommendation. Thanks to Hooked Wit for responding to my feedback! 👍🏻

You are correct that some of the statues are currently 2D, but this is not for performance reasons. Extant statues are now geographically distributed - they have to be visited & photographed & those images processed to generate 3D models. The models already in the simulation have required visits to various locations in the UK, France, Belgium, Germany & Luxembourg. Those which are not extant (or are inaccessible) have to be re-created by a 3D modeller. This takes time (and money). I considered it better to include 2D versions in the interim, rather than leaving the space empty.

Eve and the Serpent by Johannes Antonius van der Ven (now at Bootle Town Hall) is currently in the process of being modelled - the 2D version will be replaced by this 3D model at the next update (V1.2.?).

There are some items in the gallery (Gulliver, 3 statuettes, Joseph Towne's dissected head, the Tempest Prognosticator, the Willis & Gray and Davison organs; along with some cabinets and stands). Further cabinets and stands are currently being modelled, and these will be included in the next update. There is a lot to add, this takes time, both to research exactly what was where at the exhibition, and then to model it. I made a judgement to produce a first release once a large part of the nave and transept were filled - I figured it was best to share something partially completed earlier, rather than wait a very long time until a lot more was modelled. There is a limit to what one person can do - I am working as fast as I can!

This application was originally developed as VR-only. However, Steam provide code which supports a "fallback camera" if a headset is not detected. The use of right mouse button to enable camera movement is the default in that code. Some enhancements have been made to this code (including keeping the camera a constant height above the floor and avoiding passing through objects). The camera controlled mouse movement has also been improved from the default (by default motion of the camera was bound by the mouse reaching the limits of the screen, this has been changed to make it unbound).

I missed your 27 Nov update (sorry - Dec was a bit of a blurr!) - thank you.

Whilst statues are on hold I'm concentrating on locomotives.

Statues are in 3 categories: extant (accessible); extant (not accessible); lost. The first category there are a few I hope to visit in the next few weeks (to photograph & model). The others the intention is to make full 3D models of all in due course. A half 3D / half flat would probably be harder to achieve than full 3D (& wouldn't look as good). A modeller is lined up, and as many images as possible are being collected for the modeller to work from. Unfortunately I cannot yet give a timescale.

Well! It seems I have gotten a response from the developer, promising some improvements, as well as a detailed explanation of what's going on. I was not aware that this was done by one person, which understandably explains the lack of detail in the game itself, and the challenges getting realistically accurate 3D models of several statues.

I will be monitoring this app for updates, of which I will install and try once they are released. If I find that this is being actively worked on and improved, I might just change my recommendation.
