The pixel remaster is my first experience with FF2 so I can't speak for the faithfulness to the original, but I do enjoy some of the QoL that comes with the remasters.

I really like the leveling systems in this one. It can be a little tedious to get your weapons and spells into the double-digits but its still a very cool way to handle an RPG. I kind of want to try something like this myself...

Absolutely stellar little game. Took me about 4 hours to do everything so some might find it a bit expensive for the amount of content but I think that the quality more than makes up for it. The movement is fun and satisfying and the dialogue is a treat. It's a great low-stakes adventure to make an afternoon out of.

I never got very far in Final Fantasy as a kid so I think that this version being a lot more accessible is a good call. There are a lot of great QoL improvements but the text being smooth in an otherwise blocky game might throw you off. I've been told you can mod that but I didn't bother.

While grinding for beastiary entries I over-leveled. Now I know how isekai protagonists feel. 10/10

EDIT: They did eventually fix the achievements it seems.

It's basically if Merry Gear Solid wasn't as good. How do you just not have the achievements work what is going on?

Some things I like:
-The graphics are cute
-Lots of things you can check for flavor text

Things I don't
-No apparent way to remap controls
-Useless button prompts that only show game pad buttons even if one is not plugged in
-Run meter covered by walls for some reason
-knocking out enemies is janky and you kinda just gotta mash until it works (Does the game even tell you you can do this??)
-Same with running (Is this listed anywhere???)
-Can't change volume settings

Nicalis being trash aside it's ok for a quick distraction I guess but it's clear not a lot of thought went into the game and its missing a lot of features I think should be a standard regardless of whether its going to be free or not. I'd recommend looking up Merry Gear Solid and playing those games instead.

Maybe I'll play again if more of my friends get the game but I wasn't impressed. The bots are completely inept and the enemies are boring. Its missing a lot of the charm Left 4 Dead did. Not quite scratching that itch...

It's weird that the tutorial has continues.

I first picked up the game about three years ago and after doing a couple chapters, I sort of fell out of it. I recently picked it up again and had a blast!

Some things I like:
-Having the different fighting styles is really interesting but I feel like there is a stark difference in utility between them. I ended up using both yellow styles through the majority of the game.
-Side quests are interesting and really show off a lot of the charm in the game's storytelling.
-Tons of mini-games scattered around town makes it feel really alive (slot cars were my favorite, the rythm games my least).
-Everything you need to do to obtain 100% is presented to you in the pause menu like a big checklist.

Things I don't:
-This might be on my end, but the opening logo and emulated Sega games ignore my mixer settings and will play at full volume.
-There is a LOT to do and while a lot of it is really fun, a lot of it is really tedious grinding objectives (like run 100km) that I'm not happy to see count towards 100%.
-A lot of the game's hidden achievements are only available during one-time set pieces during the story and can be missed permanently in a file.

Overall I had a lot of fun and after clearing the game I immediately went to the Steam Store to pick up the original game's remake. I probably will only pick off a few more easy achievements before putting this one to rest.
